PDair, the manufacturer of the PSP leather face cover, has a history of cases and protectors for Palms, Pocket PC's, iPod's, Blackberry's and other device. While one manufacturer has chosen to come out with an aluminum based 'armor' which has been met with at least one bad review, PDair has developed a much softer leather alternative which I'm happy to report works very well.
Construction and Installation
If you haven't noticed, your PSP has two screw slots just left of the Power button on the top of your device. While it may seem frightening to be putting screws into your shiny new $300 gaming toy, the screwholes are actually there for this purpose. The PDair leather face cover comes with two small screws and a screwdriver to install the cover. Installing the cover takes only a few seconds. It is suggested that you hold onto the mini screwdriver as you may want to remove it in the future, though it is a simple mini flathead so you should have no problems getting one at your local hardware store if you lose it.
In use
To be honest, I was dubious that the cover would be of any use, but after a few days I really began to appreciate it. Prior to using the cover, I was always overly cautious with my PSP, making sure to set it down gently and in a safe area where nothing could fall onto the screen. With the cover in place, the screen is well protected and I feel that the unit is in safer hands. Also, when you're gaming and need to set the unit down for a few minutes (toilet break, phone, etc), the cover will be positioned behind the PSP, allowing you to set it down naturally. It may seem like small potatos, but it made a difference in the way I handled my PSP from day to day. One advantage of a soft cover like this over harder alternatives is that picking up and playing is not delayed by the need to unlock / undo any safety mechanisms which may the case with a hard protector. You simply flip the leather cover and are ready to go.
Overall
Whether you should buy the PDair PSP leather face cover depends largely unpon your usage. If you need something to protect your unit in a backpack, this is definetly not for you. But if you're like me and always have the PSP lying around at home, then it works perfectly to keep your PSP covered and screen clean with no worries about scratching. The quality of the leather is quite nice, it doesn't feel cheap and is well stitched. Overall, I'm impressed, the PDair PSP leather face cover is staying on my PSP.
Hmm, I think it'd be better if it had some sort of latch or zipper to keep it closed, that way it wouldn't accidently open up, and your PSP gets scratched anyways.
I've seen pictures of the case version and its just so nice looking. While some would think the enclosing type hard cases would be better, it just doesn't compare to the feel and look of leather. That and with a screen protector and one of those skins, I'd say the PSP would be nicely protected.
I have a leather case from PDA ARMOR that covers the front and back and uses a magnetic clasp to keep shut.
It looks almost identical to this one with two slots for memory sticks in the back piece behind the UMD door. link
