Go on! You know you want it
Summary: Not what I expected compared with Ridge Racer

Just got the game today, and while I have only put in about 1 hours worth of play on NFSUR, I am beginning to regret buying this.

Why?

Graphics compared to RR is noticeably weaker - perhaps RR's anti-aliased look helps in smoothing overall pleasantness - NFSUR's graphics are pixellated and "rough".

The thing that killed me with NFSUR is the CONTROL or rather the lack of it. Compared to RR, controlling a car in NFSUR is like controlling a wild horse with a small whip. A slight press of the D-Pad or the analog nub (the analog nub is way worse) results in the car slamming into the side of the road, and trying to correct results in the car slamming into the *opposite* side of the road - very frustrating. If real cars handled like this, we would all be DEAD! RR had a mild understeer problem which can be corrected by drifitng, but in the inital cars at least, NFSUR has massive OVERsteer which is well nigh uncorrectable.

Ok ok, maybe I have only played this game for an hour, but damn! you shouldn't have to fight the controls to even get the car to go where you want it to.

Gonna give it a few more days for the controls to sink in, and maybe give an update.

Tisk tisk, should have bought wipeout pure, i really dont have much faith in the need for speed franchise right now so i didnt have a very good feeling about this one, thanks though for letting others know who might have made the same choice.

Thanks for the thoughts. Overall I think I'll probably let this one slip through my fingers. Wipeout Pure and RR seem to be the style I'm going to go for till there is a more pure racer out there.

But it's great to hear your opinion, thanks again.

I think the Underground series is getting a little old, EA should have made a fresh new NFS( like a new hot pursuit) for the PSP. Good review, now I know to stay away from this one.

Wow, I was thinking of getting this until GT4M comes out, but I think I'm going to go with Wipeout Pure instead.

Update :

Well, after a couple more days playing with NFSUR, its still not growing on me. AND I am still stuck on the 3rd race in the Novice section!!! Damn, I didn't know I was that bad a driver.

The controls/handling got a bit better once the car is upgraded (handling, suspension, stabiliser - thats all one can afford at the start), but I am still bouncing off the sides like a rubber ball.

Pet peeves -
1. Slight scrape of wall = drop in speed from 120+ mph to <40mph
2. Slight collision with wall (front on btween 20-40 degrees) *bounces* your car to the *other* wall and slows you right down.

Games shouldn't be this hard ... or maybe I am just old ...

Speaking of collisions and slowdowns, if any game is crazy about that, its Ridge Racers... it has like 0 collision physics... its just random bumping, it sends you to the other side, its just weird... its a big mess... totally kills the realism. Such a gream otherwise, but the collision and the announcer are horrid!

I wouldn't have noticed... I don't hit the walls :P

Only kidding, yeah, I've noticed for low angle bumps, like hitting a wall you should be paralell with is fine, but if you hit a larger angle the car does indeed "bounce". Its been like this with all the good ridge racers so I'm not too fussed, the game is still amazing

Has anybody run into battery life problems with NFSUR yet?

I fully charged my PSP overnight and played NFSUR with audio off, display on medium, and it died on me after approximately 2 hours of play (45 minutes morning commute; 45 minutes evening commute; 30 minutes after dinner).

Seems like NFSUR is sucking down more juice than Ridge Racer which I could play over 3-4 days of commuting.

@darren - Is your WLAN switch turned on?

@steering - I find the analog control much better when in first person view. I don't know why that should make a difference but I fishtail all over the place in third person view...

WLAN is definitely not switched on (theres a blue light on the bottom left if its on - i just used it to update to firmware 1.5)

After persevering (and crashing and bumping all over the place), I can at least now control the car better. And you are right about the view affecting the physics of the car. Bumper view is definitely much more controllable than the 3rd person views.

To improve car handling, recommend that your first few thousand points be used to upgrade
a) Suspension
b) Chassis
c) Control

and only after that upgrade the other parts like engines, turbos, N20 and other stuff.

I maxed out Suspension, then Control then some Chassis parts first, and this gave me a more stable car to win more races then onwards to upgrade the rest. Now playing with all Level 1 upgrades completed on the Golf Gti and just unlocked Level 2 upgrades.
