This device is almost perfect. Others have commented on the sound and I must agree. There are things in the audio of Metal Gear Acid that I didn't even know were there. Lumines sounds fantastic through the Playgear Amp. Movies sound as they were intended.
I plugged my MP3 player into it to give it a test with some flac files and I was very impressed. I really did not expect this kind of sound. I'm quite familiar with Logitech quality, but I expected something less at this price. I played the tracks I use for listening tests of stereo equipment and the Playgear Amp performed. The sound was layered and full. There was no "tinny" sound or pushy highs. The bass was full without being overbearing. The mids were clear and loud. The volume can go well above comfortable levels without clipping. The sound through a good set of headphones with a nice headphone amp can be better, but you would be paying a LOT more for that set up. And, sometimes you don't want to (or can't) use 'phones and this system is great for such times.
At first I was a little put off by the "some assembly required" aspect each time you want to use it. The worst part was looking for a power outlet, sometimes having to move furniture to plug it in. Getting all of the cables and the bracket for the PSP out of the case and hooked up was starting to get old. But once I invested in the AAA batteries everything turned around. You can be up and running in just a few seconds, enjoying your gaming or media.
The physical quality and feel of the system is very high. It has the look and feel of the PSP itself. They go together really well. The case has a nice elegant look to it with its black color and soft outer cloth. But I really think it could use a handle. You could put it n a pack or bag, but then you wouldn't be showing off that nice case and the Logitech logo. It would also be nice if the case had a spot for the PSP itself. But most of the time I do have that in the Playgear Pocket on a strap around my neck.
If you want good sound and know there will be times when you aren't using headphones, then I highly recommend the Playgear Amp. It is a great addition to Logitech's product line.
i have heard that this is one of the better mobile psp specific speaker systems, it looks nice, has a travel case (nice plus), battery opp (plus for me, school and all), when its folded up it is small as heck, and is thin too, i bet i could even put it on a chalk tray on a chalkboard if i needed to (i may have to )
All in all, an essential in my book
TheBerg said: "Very good but can you play a game while the speakers are plugged in?"
That's what I'm saying, and have been saying since they were announced. How exactly are you suppose to grip it in order to play anything? Even if the speakers aren't too wide to grasp instead of the PSP sides themselves, how do you keep from covering the speakers and thus distorting the sound quality?
Actually, i bought this two days ago and it can BE FOR GAMES. It comes with two chords a short and a long so you can be a foot and a half away while playing it. IT SOUNDS GREAT sometimes i pull out the chord to remember how it was without... and its like day and night. Movies it great watched T2 last night...wow. But played MLB and the sounds of the crowd are amazing and ridge racer has so many things you cant hear with the noraml psp speakers.......highly recommend!!!!!
oh yeah......Lumines is simply awesome with the playgear amp. also to clarify you dont hold the whole thing if you wanna play a game with it. the cradle is only for watching things on it. got mine on sale at circuit city for 49.99
