Summary: Forget Wipeout Fusion, this is Pure

You all know the bitter disappointment that Wipeout Fusion served to all the euro gamers, as you Americans couldn't get a taste of this poor addition to the wipeout series. But Wipeout Pure is something else. Upon buying the game I knew it was going to be fantastic and I wasn't disappointed. Even the front page of the game on the PSP menu screen was entertaining, offering me a taste of what was to come. The menu screens look very cool, suited to the typical demographic who would buy a PSP.

The actual gameplay is near perfect, it offers a futuristic racing experience which could never had been before anticipated on a handheld. The weapons option in races let you do some cool stuff, like lay down mines for ships behind you or set off an earthquake that shatters everything in front of you, very helpful for when you're stuck in 8th position. The speed that you experience when playing the game is simpy mind-blowing when you go through speeds of over 600mph, crashing into walls is inevitable, but not if you can master the bends and airbrakes in the other speed classes.

The visuals in this game have to be one of the best on offer for the PSP, all of the ships look great and the enviroments in which you race in are very futuristic, keeping faithful to the wipeout series. As for the multiplayer option in the game, it is seamless, making for very easy and entertaining gameplay with your friends. As you all know, the downloads that have been offered have been downloaded by many, and the new tracks, ships and skins for the menu screens are exciting additions to an already enthralling game, as far as I'm aware three gamma packs are available to Japanese gamers and a few for American PSP owners too. The browser 'hack' in this game is not more than a gimmick but of course this very slow browser wasn't meant for the gamers pleasure.

But with all good things, there are obviously some low points to this game. One con that will bother most gamers are the frame-rate problems, which have been encountered in other PSP games too. This happens when there is a lot of action going on, like when a bomb goes off in front of five ships, it can get very annoying at times. Another slight problem is that loading times are a tad on the long side, you can expect about seven seconds wait in between races.

Nearly all I have is praise for this game, except for the shorfalls in some areas which don't cause too much bother during gameplay. This has to be one of the best games on the PSP, if not the best. Pure has revitalised the wipeout series and its great.
