| Summary: One of the best games available
92
Out of all the games out thus far in the PSP's library, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee is the best game out there. OK, I know what you're saying, "How the heck can he say such a bold statement. He definately hasn't played every game out for the PSP." If you've said the following, then you are correct, I haven't played all the games out there so far, but only because this game is just so addicting; it just isn't letting me play anything else, don't blame me.
HSG:OT game modes are as follows: Single Player, Multiplayer and Training mode. In the Single Player mode, Stroke Play allows you to play on the courses that you've already unlocked via Challenge Mode. A little extra mode called Putting Challenge allows you to practice, yes you guessed it, Putting!. Different holes of various lengths and slopes are designated by colours and points. Putting tougher holes garners you more points. It's a fun mode and I'm glad it's included. Challenge Mode is what you will mostly be playing in this game. In this mode you play versus the computer in tournaments, unlocking new outfits your characters can wear as well as new clubs and balls that improve your skills in various attributes, such as spin and power. The customization process is fun and pretty deep, and gradually eases you into the game. As your characters get better they also advance in skill and learn new ways of hitting the ball as well.
Speaking of characters, there's 10 of them in this game. The game also spans a total of 6 courses and has 5 caddies. The gameplay consists of the classic three button press system. Press the X button to start the Power Meter, press it again to set the power, followed by a final press to set the impact. You can slice the ball and fade it by using the directional button on impact. It flows nicely, and you can learn different ways of hitting the ball as you progress. I was surprised by the putting system, not in its execution, but in the information they provide you with. You really are given all the slopes and distances through a small graph line above your power meter. It works really well. It's challenging yet fun at the same time. You are also given a lot of freedom with regards to camera movement. They covered all the bases in providing the player a truly "pick up and play" game.
Load times are the shortest of any PSP game I've played so far as well.
I'm really impressed with the PSP's graphics capabilities, and HSG:OT doesn't dissapoint in the graphics department. The characters look great, as do the courses. I also like the special effect's they've used when the ball gets hit by a great swing, such as fire trails and impact sparks. We've seen more impressive graphics on this system so far, (Wipeout Pure) but you definately won't be dissapointed with this game's graphics. They are some of the best out there.
Sounds great so far, doesn't it. It is, I've found myself playing this game hours on end at times. The customization of characters, the unlocking of courses and items is addictive, and even though there is a definate learning curve to this game, it's FUN.
So, why a 92 then, you ask. Well it does have some minuses which I like to lump at the end of my reviews so you can see them clearer. First, the caddies. They really have no use in this game, other than offering you a cutesy announcing kind of voice while you play. I really wish they had implemented the caddies in a better way. This game can be played in AD-HOC mode, but not in Infrastructure mode, which is really unfortunate. It would have been great whooping, um, I mean playing some of you over the internet. Lastly, the items you collect, while making your character at times nicer looking or weirder looking, don't have much impact as well. But, this is a minor point, because you do get clubs and balls as well. These negatives, other than the multiplayer, are nitpicky and do drop the final down a bit.
What more can I say. Clap Hanz has created a winner. They've managed to fit a lot onto this tiny UMD but at the same time have kept the same fun, addictive gameplay we've grown to love on the console versions. If you're looking for a game that is tough to put down and has tons of replayability and value, go out and buy Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee right now. It's money well spent. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got another hole to play. Get your minds out of the gutter. Sheesh!

I think the game can get a little too difficult as it progresses but its one of the best if not best ive played... i cant put it down...
Btw anyone know how to use the homing balls. I beat someone and it said homing balls were now available but I didnt see them in my equip list.....
+
Good question..... i would love to know how to use homing balls and high and low trajectory balls as well...
+
Yeah it said they are now available.....
Also I seen on one of my matches a computer player do some type of trip with the ball where it actually warped. I unlocked his character but dont know how to do it.
The manual is a little vague.
One feature that would of made this game much better would be a money/store system where tings can be unlocked and bought. I get a lot of useless crap unlocked a lot of times....
+
i'm still playing this game, it has held my attention FAR longer than any other game i've bought

Super backspin A.K.A. Homing ball - Hold up when setting shot power, then hold down
when setting impact. Perfect impact is necessary. A successful Homing ball
will either strike the pin bounce off then strike again repeatedly or land past
the cup and backspin into the cup. Its basically the same as setting ths super spins
except it is up and down as opposed to left and right.
+
Thanks! I needed that. Would have never figured that out.
+
super backspin IS homing ball? sometimes the backspin will move the ball AWAY from the cup - it is annoying
+
Yeah the game becomes almost impossible on the 4th course.....
+
it would have been nice to have a save option mid hole. also if u have a few people the tournaments are pretty entertaining, but u dont really know what others did on each hoe if u finish early. Does the homing ball actualy go to the pin if aimed away from the flag and is hit succesfully, or does it only hit the pin and do that if u are aimed perfectly, which is almost impossible
+
Excellent game. Very tough, but I keep coming back to it.
+
neone reached platinium rank... u barely get 1- 2% each items T_T
+
Yeah I decided to just download someone's saved game as it was much more fun for me to play with everything unlocked. To me the game started out real fun and then just became so hard it was annoying. It sucks from a point of wishing I could of beat it myself but I am really enjoying everything unlocked.
+
verrrrrry hardbut has replayability if you can master it
+
I have this game and love it except once you get higher and higher you play a versus match against a character and they are just too good. They will make 128 yard chip ins just to make you mad and to make you not care about your last good shot......i am at the last character and he is just so hard....and old.
