I remember playing a little bit of this game on the PlayStation. I got my copy used, so there was no manual. Confused the !$!~*%^ out of me for a while there (some parts still do). Still, I'd love to play this. Any word if it's just a re-release/remake, or is this a new Valkyrie Profile?

It's a rerelease/remake with a couple of new bits in it.
They're making a new Valkyrie Profile for the PS2 though, which is called Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria and is supposed to be a prequel.
is this turn based(ala final fantasy)? If its not, I might buy it... I could ALMOST never stand turn-based RPGs. Chrono-Cross was my favorite turnbased RPG, even though most would say FF
It's turnbased (you go, they go, you go, etc), altough it's really speedy and the battlesystem is kind of unique.
Basically you (usually) have 4 characters and each of them represents a button ( O, /, X & [] )
When it's your turn you hit the button corresponding to the character to make them attack.
The order you activate the characters determines the kind of attack they will do so you'll have to sequence and time the attacks right to create big ass combo's. When you do enough damage you can activate super-attacks with flashy effects.
See this movie for an example of 1 round of combat.
You're probably better off with the PSX version though; from what I've read over here the company in charge of porting it did a horrible rapejob.
