The very first USB peripheral for the PSP is this voice recognition acccessory made specifically for the Japanese game Talkman. Measuring 50x10x10mm and weighing 6g, it connects to the USB port and comes with software which is capable of translating Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English.

It's mainly related to lack of the 5V that USB has, less thoroughput, and the cabling itself. They theoretically COULD make a headset, but it would have to have a proprietary jack exactly like the remote cord has and that can handle not being powered. But wht do this when USB is right there? That's the thing. There would be no way to just make a headset that plugged into the remote because there wouldn't be a channel in the line for the audio coming from the headset's mic (and again, the mic would need power)

EDIT - Another important fact is that we're also talking about the difference between analog and digital here. The USB mic dongle they're bundling in will be powered by USB, have a higher-fidelity mic, and will digitize auduo input for the game/programs voice-recognition algorithms. The low-quality analog mic that MAY be possible through that bottom headphone jack can't possible do anything close to that.

I'm actually more interested in the translation software than the game itself.

it would be great to be able to record voice memos as well. i can see that being a selling point for me. then i can justify it at work

If you use your PSP to translate the spoken word, be sure to use the wrist strap so you don't drop the PSP when your face is slapped due to buggy translation software.

Rianousuke - interesting....so it'd be pointless to have a battery operated headset?

btw, i'd much rather it be usb personally, it's just that it'd be coming out awkwardly from the top, unless i'ts A) wireless (highly unlikely) or B) wrapped around the back of the psp to come out the bottom and up to your face.

There is no official announcement on translation abilities for this. I was just speculating and thought it was a natural fit. I would expect it to be used from some game you talk to instead of something really useful like translation.

i was just thinking the other day that it won't be long before we are carrying around little devices that have lcd screens and translate on the fly... so you could be sitting with a person from a different country and speak to them in english which appears on the screen in, say French, and they reply in French which appears on your screen in English.....

Apparently it is bundled with a game that helps Japanese learn english. But it does recognize a few languages. Does this mean maybe you can learn Japanese if you speak English? Play this game for a year, then you will understand all the imports?

This translating device is nice in all but I think that the game will have a hard time translating english since its a japanese game. It makes me think that you have to speak in a japanese accent for it to understand.

This device rocks. I have one and the voice recognition software's (Talkman) really useful. It has no problem recognizing proper english but it just takes some getting used to (in my case, five minutes).
