One of the most influential examples of anime, Akira is based on the manga (comic book) by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story is set in the post-apocalyptic community of Neo-Tokyo. Tetsuo is a fiercely individualistic member of a scroungy motorcycle gang. The despotic authorities, the robot-like police, and even the cycle gang pursue Tetsuo when he's bombarded with a new, insidious energy source that has rendered him telekinetic. Budgeted at eight million dollars, Akira has become a cult favorite in the States thanks to generous midnight-movie exposure and its availibilty on video and cable TV. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

i watched this when i was like twelve and had to wait til i got older to truly understand it. this was the first really well known anime to come out in america and almost defined how we see animes today. good movie, kind of graphic violence and some nudity(what most of you would expect from a typical anime though) but this is like the mecca of anime in the US maybe Japan. worth watching but still not worth paying 20 bucks to get it on UMD, just buy the DVD :P

Great animation for a movie made in 1988 though

thats what makes this movie so awesome, is that its completely open to interpretation. Brilliant through and through, a true epic. abit dissapointed by the revamped dvd release, (only for the new voicework) everything else was perfectly done. best moments:
tetsuo's walk though the hospital
tetsuo vs. tank shell tetsuo wins
tetsuo vs. laser soldiers, tetsuo wins
tetsuo meeting happy teddy bear and friends
space laser.
so many superb moments, this is an essential to anyone's collection, anime fan or not. im psyched to see it getting acknowledged for umd!

I remember the first time I saw this was in college. A friend of mine just came back from Japan with a bootleg copy of Akira in Japanese. It was an incredible experience and thus my introduction into "japanimation" was fueled. This film was truly groundbreaking at the time it was first released and remains a legend. I wish the creator of Akira would make a prequel - the flashbacks shown in the film beg that this be done!
I've got the videotape and DVD editions and will now add the UMD. It's worth it.

this new version blows more than bush at a press conference youre best off tryin to get a download of the straemline pictures version and transferring it over. i grew up with the old one and the voices are done better. tetsuo sounds so much weaker in this.
