There is already a dump floating around the internet. I wonder if there is much Japanese text in it?

Sucks in every way! Bought it 5 days ago, touched it twice. I'm disgusted. You can't see more than 1 meter ahead, camera super-sucks, music's awful (except the only repetitive orchestra one). Not very import friendly (all menus Japanese ONLY, mission explenations too...); maybe for the ones who are used to the previous versions, it will be easier. Very cool and superb graphics when in game pre calculated scenes, but when the game starts, graphics are ugly and full of bugs. Don't be surprised if your arm and weapons can go through every wall. A real disappointment... this game smells unfinished business....

what a terrible review. Too bad everyone else I've talked to loves this game to bits.

Yes the draw distance is terrible, but it's no worse than it was in the PS1 versions. Also, you didn't mention the main thing in this game. The mission editor. All the single player missions are only quickly created examples of what can be done with the mission editor. The mission editor is the heart and soul of this game.

It's pretty bad that you can completely dis a game after touching it twice. Even the worst game I've ever played required more than two sessions to determine it's awfulness.

I reserve judgment on this game until I see it myself, but I am looking forward to the professionally designed single player game, not levels I design myself, so Willykyu's comments carry greater weight from that perspective, which I'm sure others share.

That is true. If that is what you are looking for, you may be disappointed.

However, in no time at all, you'll find many people who've created many professional caliber levels.

Also, I still stand by my statement re: only having played the game twice. Play more and get back to us.

I've played it at length (and submitted a review) and the draw distance is astrocious. You can't see people until they are within 50-60 on your stealth meter, and since you have no idea what direction unless you play hot-and-cold by running back and forth looking at the meter, which almost always gives you away to the enemy. I have no desire to design my own levels. The ones built into the game are too, too short. And the game menus are Japanese heavy, kanji heavy, and while navigable, I'd recommend waiting for a domestic release if someone ever announces it. Hopefully they'll fix the draw distance or something! Some games do get improvements released here, like Metal Gear Acid with multiplay and I heard Hot Shots Golf got improved textures, so you never know.

By the way, Tenchu 1 had BETTER draw distance.

I'm not into the homemade scene myself. I don't buy games so I can make the levels (if I did, I'd buy like RPG Maker or something).

I have to disagree. Tenchu 1 had the same draw distance. It only seems better because the graphics were so much worse. Also, when on the ground the perspective is a little wonky, so it looks like you don't see that far ahead. When you get closer to buildings you can see the draw distance is actually T1 levels.

Tenchu Shinobi Taizen Menu Translation Mini-FAQ v0.2
by Kyozabe (wingzero2021)

When you start the game and press Start at the title screen, you will be presented with two options.

Press O while the first option (Name Entry) is highlighted to get to the Name Entry screen.

Press L or R a few times to switch to English text entry.

Text Entry Controls:

O: Input Selected Text

X: Delete Selected Text

Triangle: Switch Control Box (Text Input menu and Text Output Menu)

L/R: Switch between languages (Hiragana, Katakana, Alphabet, Symbols, etc.)

Start: Finish

After you finish entering your name, press O to continue to the Options screen.

Options screen:

1. Controls

2. Unknown

3. Sound (Background Music, Sound Effects, and Restore Defaults [respectively)

4. Difficulty (Green = Easy, Yellow = Normal, Red = Hard) Note: unconfirmed

5. Name Entry (Edit, Confirm)

6. Data (Save, Load, Delete, Autosave Toggle [Left = On, Right = Off])

7. Restore Defaults (Top = Yes, Bottom = No)

Note: The words Yes and No, in Japanese, are Hai (Hi) and Iie (E-yay). These words are common in almost every Japanese game- Try to remember that the answer No is spelled "iie" in Japanese, and that the first two symbols (which are each the Japanese "i" are the same.

This can help you answer Yes/No questions (even if you don't really understand the question- For instance, if you are asked a Yes or No question following the completion of a mission, the question might be "Do you want to save your progress?"

Once you're finished configuring the options, press X to access the Main Menu.

Main Menu:

1. Story Mode (Followed by a Character Select screen; Rikimaru, Ayane, etc. [After you select a character, it shows a Mission Select screen, and following selecting a mission, an Inventory screen, to choose which ninja tools you're bringing with you for the mission (maximum of 15). Press O to add a tool, X to remove a tool.])

2. Unknown

3. Unknown (Possibly Mission Edit)

4. Unknown (Possibly Mission Share)

5. Tutorial (With Pictures- Slightly understandable)

6. Records (Records, Movies, ??? [Probably an unlockable option])

7. Options (See above)

In-Game Pause Menu (Start button):

1. Resume

2. Restart Mission (Confirm: Yes/No)

3. Return to Inventory Menu (Restarts Mission) (Confirm: Yes/No)

4. Return to Main Menu (Confirm: Yes/No)

I haven't played Tenchu 1 in a long time but I don't remember draw distance being that bad. But you may be right. You also might be right about the camera's perspective, because when you are near buildings or are using freelook it feels like you can see much further. But I've noticed that when I stand a distance from an NPC and he's beyond my vision (in the black fog) and go into freelook, I actually CAN see further. I guess because it doesn't have to render the area behind your character like it does in 3rd person view it renders further in front, similar as to how you're talking about being near buildings.

I still find it a step backwards for the series, though.

Yeah, if there was one thing that would make this a truly spectacular game it would be increasing the draw distance. That and the camera is a little flaky in confined spaces.

Here's hoping that a NA/EU release fixes these problems!
