Eidos announces Free Running, the world's first ever video game based on the urban phenomenon of parkour. Parkour, the art of movement, is less a sport and more a way of life. Its participants, known as Free Runners or Traceurs, view the environment and its obstacles, urban or natural, as a series of challenges to be overcome. To the Traceurs, parkour has a philosophical appeal: they feel transformed by the experience, free from the grind of city life. Since its inception in Paris during the mid-1980s, it has spread across the globe and now has an international army of exponents and enthusiasts.
In Free Running, the concrete jungle becomes your urban playground as you run, vault, jump or climb over obstacles in the most fluid and flowing manner possible. Test the boundaries of human ability as you perform death-defying leaps and jaw-dropping trips across inner-city rooftops. To be crowned King of Parkour, you must master over 50 moves, tricks and stunts including 'Kong Vaults', 'Pharaoh Climbs', 'Rail Split Vaults' and 'Vertical Wall Runs' in a variety of game modes while racing against human or computer-controlled competitors.
Free Running has been developed in association with Sebastien Foucan, one of the French founders of the movement, and the UK's foremost Parkour collection, Urban Freeflow. To aid your progress, Sébastien appears in the game as your mentor, teaching you new moves and tricks. Members of Urban Freeflow also make an appearance as unlockable playable characters.

I remember reading about Parkour in a New York Times article several months ago... never thought it would popular enough to justify a PSP game... guess I was wrong.

I first heard about "free runners" in a comic book called "Global Frequency". It's written by one of my most favorite authors, Warren Ellis. Anyway, there is an issue of Global Frequency where a free runner is the only person able to cross New York City in time to difuse a "dirty bomb". I was wondering if free running was a real thing or just something Warren Ellis made up. Now I know. I have to google this.

OK, what has this world come to where we can make a game where you run. RUNNING IS NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN MAKE A FULL GAME ABOUT!!!!!! Personally this will either be somehitng that you pick up for 5 minutes when your waiting during commercials, not a game where you can pick it up for 2-3 hours and strait play.

I'm as open minded as the next person... but something about playing a game based on running just doesn't seem too enthralling.
To be honest, I felt like actually going to my local park and start running after seeing that clip. It reminds me how good one can feel with some creative physical activity. It kinda makes me miss my track days in high school!

Yet another horrible business decision. Can anyone name a commercially successful game that caters to such an obscure niche market like that?

Sounds good to me -- all the best parts of (the newest) Prince of Persia in a free-form environment without all of those repetitive battles, or snarky attitudes. And then throw in the fact that you're racing. Sounds sweet.edited: May 13 2005

Let's roll around a sticky ball with a funny japanese name. Let's run around whacking apes with a stick. Let's beat up hookers who don't pay us respect.
Almost every game idea sounds crazy or stupid. That doesn't make them bad games.
