Eidos announces Free Running, the world's first ever video game based on the urban phenomenon of parkour. Parkour, the art of movement, is less a sport and more a way of life. Its participants, known as Free Runners or Traceurs, view the environment and its obstacles, urban or natural, as a series of challenges to be overcome. To the Traceurs, parkour has a philosophical appeal: they feel transformed by the experience, free from the grind of city life. Since its inception in Paris during the mid-1980s, it has spread across the globe and now has an international army of exponents and enthusiasts.
In Free Running, the concrete jungle becomes your urban playground as you run, vault, jump or climb over obstacles in the most fluid and flowing manner possible. Test the boundaries of human ability as you perform death-defying leaps and jaw-dropping trips across inner-city rooftops. To be crowned King of Parkour, you must master over 50 moves, tricks and stunts including 'Kong Vaults', 'Pharaoh Climbs', 'Rail Split Vaults' and 'Vertical Wall Runs' in a variety of game modes while racing against human or computer-controlled competitors.
Free Running has been developed in association with Sebastien Foucan, one of the French founders of the movement, and the UK's foremost Parkour collection, Urban Freeflow. To aid your progress, Sébastien appears in the game as your mentor, teaching you new moves and tricks. Members of Urban Freeflow also make an appearance as unlockable playable characters.
I'd love to see red go out and do any of this stuff. Quite frankly I doubt these guys were first in line for a PSP anyway. <http://www.urbanfreeflow.com/urban_graffiti/urban_graffiti.htm>
Check 'em out before you knock 'em. Personally I'm excited about this product.
If you only check out one vid from the site I linked make it this one: <http://www.ufkrew.com/videos/motion1.wmv>
phildo has a good point as well. I find just about ever sports game I've played boring.. Tony Hawk and SSX tricky are about the only sports titles I like and they're so very over the top that I can't help but enjoy them. HSG is the same story, over the top fun. Well, these guys are real and still massively over the top. They are martial arts/gymnists who've decided they're tired of walking to work.
It looks more like Prince of Persia II, than anything. Just without the fighting. So unless they can put some really slick moves and game elements into this game, I'd rather wait for a PSP port of Prince of Persia to come out.
I just want to point out that this isn't really a game about running. It's "free running", which is doing stuff like jumping from rooftop to rooftop and using buildings and architecture to perform crazy-wild acrobatic feats. This is really quite an amazing sport. I definatly DON'T have the balls to do this kind of stuff, and I doubt that anyone who posts on this site could say any different.
Nonbelievers need to see Parkour executed by real people, and they'll understand it more. Check out link which is a movie of some pretty good stuff, and link has a lot about Parkour.
Personally, I like the idea of a game which doesn't have such specific goals as "find the orange oompa loompa." Quote from IGN on game types: "Free Race, Race 'n Chase, Time Attack, Free Style, Target Hit" IGN says it will be a prime example of the PSP's readiness for "gaming on the move, anywhere. In this game, the world around you becomes your playground -- where others walk, you jump; where others stop, you climb; where others stall, you leap to victory"
that was EFIN amazing. that is a great link and those guys are crazy. i cant wait to see when that sport gets even more extreme lol. definately renting this game for sure after seeing those guys do it in real life, it will be really interesting to see how the mechanics of the game play out but i might as well try.
Looks like a really interesting and probably fun game, but yeah - it does look kinda retarded. Even in the video people looked like a sad combination of runners, street dancers, jazz hands, and "atitood". I'm just glad EA isn't doing this or else we'd have to put up with EA Trax, in-game advertising and more "atitood".
I wonder if they ever get tired and say "This is gay. Why don't we just take the bus?"
