What about nero recode? the newest patch includes support for crunching to PSP format. The only downside is that I haven't figured out a way to get subtitles to be compressed into the final output. I watch a lot of import titles and would really like to be able to read what's going on.
Does this program handle subtitles??

PSP Video 9 and Rapiz encoder are free and work quite well. I like Nero the bes so far though.

This program will not decrypt copyrighted dvds. Any company that puts support for ripping copyrighted dvds in their program will be sued into oblivion, just like DVDxCopy and others. They ESPECIALLY aren't going to take the chance of litigation when DVD Decrypter is already widespread and simple. Let some other little program do the dirty work.
3GP Converter is simple and the drag and drop is nice, but it lacks English documentation. The biggest drawback here is that it won't support 480x272 screen resolution.
Nero Recode is great (and I already own it lol). Once you have dvd files on the hard drive, Nero treats it just like any other dvd no matter where it came from. You can specify where to beging and end your clip, or choose by chapters, lots of simple options and some advanced options for those who like it. It has many presets, including the Memory Stick (PSP) setting. The biggest downside is that PSP preset does not support the full 480x272 resolution of the PSP. You get 320x200 or smaller.
Nero, by far is the best program that I've used so far. It supports cropping and widescreen on other presets, just not on Memory Stick (PSP) setting. Perhaps this is because of the target audience. I don't suppose many people are going to crop and resize their movies to be full screen. It takes a little bit of effort and many people aren't going to like losing the top and bottom 15% or so of the picture so that it can be letterboxed. I have some music videos that are ALREADY 16:9 and cropping those is perfect, but then Nero won't support 16:9 output to PSP. Nothing is more ridiculous than watching a letterbox video on a letterbox device.
Having said that, I'm going to check PSP Video 9 and see how that flies. I don't have high hopes though. LOL Does anyone know where the PSP video specs can be found? I've converted some videos to the proper resolution, codec, size and the PSP shows them as Incompatible Data. What's the deal? Are there some weird specifics to their standard? Or have they crippled it in some way?
EDITED - From reading on PSP Video 9's forums, Sony has crippled the video playback from memory stick media. They have the video stream capped at 300 macroblocks. Sounds like an attempt to limit full screen movies, etc to what you buy on UMD. Dillholes.edited: May 12 2005
