I've heard these sound better than the EX71's and the EX71's are certainly no slouch. I don't think the EX81's are short-cord though so using these with the remote would probably not be practical. I went with the EX71 whites instead of these EX81's because I wanted to use the remote and the ear clips interfere with my glasses. If you want something cheaper have a look at the EX51's which are almost identical to the EX71's. You can't go wrong with either one of these.

I've heard that these sound worse than the EX71's.
Compare the specs of the EX71's:
Impedance: 16 ohms at 1 kHz
Sensitivity: 100 dB/mW
Power handling capacity: 100mW
Frequency Response: 6 - 23,000Hz
to the EX81's:
Impedance: 16 ohms
Sensitivity: 100 dB/mW
Power handling capacity: 100 mW
Frequency response: 5 to 23,000 Hz
The frequency response is different!
I'm pretty sure that the EX81's are exactly the same as the EX71's the only difference being that the EX81's are clip on headphones and cost a little more.
EDIT: The EX81SL are short cord (0.5m) and comes with a 1m extension cord just like the EX71SL. However, the EX81LP is 1.2m.edited: May 10 2005

I've had the EX71 model for my ipods for about a year now and they are fantastic, but you have to be a fan of "in ear" types. My partner about them because they make his ears sweaty. He's a freak, regardless. So these are basically identical as far as specs. These are white and over the ear, but they still have that janky short cord. This sounds like no big deal, but is very irritating. I've since given them away and am looking for new earbuds with a normal cord. PS - You can find the 71 and 81's on sale at amazon.com frequently. I actually got mine of ebay for about $30.

andy, i'll resarch the differences on my own later on, but did you read any difference on the material used for the drivers themselves? that possibly coupled with the different typeof form factor might justify the cost difference for some people.. If I listened to the 2 I'd probably be able to tell the difference due to the fact I am a sound designer by profession. what's your take on it?

These are very good headphones. I got mine here in Japan when they first came out. I have the white, because I bought them for my iPod. They come with three different sized rubber pads to get a better fit in your ear. A good amount of sound is blocked out by them. The cord is a little short, but it comes with an extension. Excellent value, and a great product.

Are the EX71 & EX51 noise-cancelling earphones? Also, do they feel anything like the fontopia's supplied in the value pack? because those damn earphone suck & hurt after using it awhile...

I bought a couple of sony headphones MDR-EX81, one for Christmas (last year), and the other one 3-4 months ago. The sound is great, but in both headphones the sweat is disintegrating the rubber in the longer cord (the one hanging in the neck), breaking it in pieces, and showing the electrical cables inside

It really matters on how good the sound quality is if you're wearing the right earbuds? Another thing here how many of you wear SM and MD anyone wear the LR? Just wanna know.
Thanks
