Sony has said they will not release UMD as a burnable format. I've learned to never say never, but it is SO unlikely that we will see anything related to a burnable UMD. I don't know if the discs are technically the same format as minidisc, I'm too lazy to go get mine and compare. It's likely they are identical. Sony has been pushing MD for so long. They have got some great technology behind it, it only makes sense that they would try and make use of it in the PSP, as MD never really caught on anywhere but Japan and my old truck.
You have to keep practicality in mind. Say we saw a statement today that read "UMDs are MDs!", what then? There are VERY few people with a PC minidisc drive and they were VERY expensive when I priced them a few years ago. Few people have access to these recorders, then there is still the question of disassembling the MD and either shoving it loose inside your PSP or "inserting" it into a UMD housing, which aren't readily availably, except for the sampler disc.
The whole writeable UMD thing needs to be dropped completely. Why try and utilize a proprietary format when it has already been shown to some extent that it is possible to compile and execute code from a memory stick, which is readily available, cheap(er) and much more compatible between devices. Especially considering how often most people change the content of your memory stick, too.
PHONICS - Your buddy took apart the sample disc and it fit perfectly inside. The UMD sampler? Inside a MD player?
UMD will never be a burnable format??.......i wouldnt say that.....remember dreamcast "GDrom" format??they were ripped and fit on CDR's?......it may be possible to strip and fit the data on minidisc.....hard to do,but will be eventually done....I know because I used to rip GDroms...
I believe, MD is a magnetic format whereas UMD is an optical format. They may infact be the same size disk in each case but it would be like trying to play a floppy in a CD drive. In any case HI-MD only goes up to 1GB capacity.
What the hell is this all about? UMD vs MD.?? writing to UMD?? WHAT FOR??? You freakin nigels.. all you wanna do is pirate software.. if so.. then go get a GBA.. or go buy a DC.. or XBox.. I am keen to see the PSP be a success.. and to do that it needs to _SELL_ games.. freakin idiots.. you think developers are gonna wanna work on a system they cant make any cash on to pay their wages??? huh? And the funniest thing is these are the sorts of things said by people from USA?!! .. you want everything for free but you hate communism and love capitalism.. yeah.. that makes sense..
