The latest installment of "Ridge Racer" features stunning 3D graphics, smooth analog steering and robust course selections comprised of new tracks and classic courses from the "Ridge Racer" series. For the most serious speed demons who have mastered all 39 standard tours within the game, the U.S. version features a new MAX Tour in World Tour Mode, with seven ferociously difficult tours to conquer. "Ridge Racer's" Wireless Battle permits players to battle it out head-to-head in eight-player races, while an all-new nitrous boosting system allows for faster racing than ever before.
Controls are excellent - the analog stick is fantastic. I went from a Tapwave Zodiac (with analog stick and somewhat similar Spy Hunter game) and this experience is far, far superior. Graphics make it hard to believe you're actually playing a handheld game.
I remember playing a racing type game a year or so back and it was extremely difficult to control. Good to hear this is friendlier. Is it really that fun to just race all the time though? I just got done with GTA: San Andreas and while the racing bits were fun, I couldn't imagine a whole game with just racing. Would have to test it out myself though, sounds like everyone's really into it, which is promising.
Yep I'd have to say this is classic Ridge Racer. It not only brings back memories and feelings of playing the original RR on the psone, but it reminds me more of playing RR on the ps2!! The graphics are gorgeous for a handheld. Controls are great, though RR has always been about power sliding.
My only complaints about this game are the same as the old RR: When you hit another competing car from behind they rocket ahead as if on nitrous, giving them a huge lead. I always found that irritating and unrealistic. Also, it's too easy to get 'stuck' rubbing against a fence or wall when your car is at too much of an angle when you hit and is too hard to dislodge (even if you hit the brake or steer into it to start a spin). That, and no damage to cars. Hopefully GT4 or one/both of the new Rally titles will provide that, as it's become a rather important aspect to newer games of this type. For now, the combination of racing to get best times or beating opponents to unlock new classes, tracks and cars is very addicting and the game looks amazing overall.
For me, I only enjoy the damage if its a cosmetic thing, if my car blows up or gets slow, psh, I'm taking the game back to the store. Also, the ridge racer for DS didn't get particularly high scores in GamePro magazine, it complains mainly of controls, but a psp doesn't utilize a touch screen, so how do the controls work? The sound didn't score high either, I know the DS and PSP are completely different consoles, but what is the soundtrack?
I'm loving this game off, i've been playing for a few days. I was really really into ridge racer, and this game is just amazing. My DS is soo collecting dust.
I was sold when I put this game in my PSP. After I played it I had no regrets of importing the PSP. Awesome graphics very arcadey controls which I love and the soundtrack is pretty sweet. A must own if you imported the PSP.
This is a sik little game to show off the gfx of this monster handheld. Its 'classic' arcade style racing at its absolute best. Insane amount of unlocks (the pac-man car cracked me up!!) and the tracks and car gfx, are just unbeleiveable for any handheld. Namco and the RR team are legends, and kudos to them for kicking ass with this title.
