powered down only when i'm going to sleep and powered up when im awake in the morning, in between that, i use sleep mode..been like this since i first got my psp, around feb last year..
Well.. it resets the operating system. Kinda like resetting your home pc to clear the memory.. <I'm making all this up as I go along..>. Preventing squirrels and nymphs from eating all your berries... Uh..ya.. so.. really hope that explains it. If not Pm YoYoPete..he knows EVERYTHING. Peace
I think I noticed that if I put it in sleep mode, the battery goes flat over a period of a couple of weeks. If I turn it fully off, then the battery doesn't go flat. I almost always turn it right off. I'm open to correction if my observation is wrong.
one question : is it safe to constantly plugged the psp into the ac adaptor, even it already full recharged.. i do this many times when playing online, you know how the wifi drains out the psp battery..
I am pretty sure it is fine. I think I saw that the PSP will stop charging when it is full. Mine is plugged in almost always and I have not seen any ill effects.

how do i know the difference between sleep mode and when its off?
your psp is in sleep mode when you turned on your psp it directly go to the xmb.. your psp is off when you turned on the psp your screen goes white and shows the psp logo (or whatever intro you might have).. heheh..
