Analysts are chiming in with their thoughts on the sales of PSP units at launch.
This morning, two analysts chimed in with their own thoughts. One memo from American Technology Research's PJ McNealy gave his assessment of the launch, which he describes in cautious terms. "[The] PSP [launch] has been solid but not spectacular."
"To put this in perspective," McNealy added, "while the PSP has been launched amidst much hype, the expected financial impact on the video game publishers for the March quarter has been minimal and, in our opinion, is more of a case of headline risk than actual material impact right now."
While not a definitive measure of success, McNealy pegs his assessment on ATR's own channel check of stories. "Our checks over the past two days of 150 US retailers have shown that the PSP is sold out in only 50 (33 percent) of those stores."
"We are frankly surprised by the early channel and industry checks on sales," McNealy said. He refrained from offering any long-term determination, stating, "We are hesitant to draw any macro-level conclusions about the success or failure of the PSP."

compare this to the release of the sony playstation 1. things take time. PSP WILL PREVAIL.

I agree. People are obviously reluctant to pick up something from a new company (to the handheld market anyways), and the "low" battery life, high initial cost of the value-pak, lack of advertisement, and various issues such as dead pixels are sure to hinder sales right now. But the more PSP's sold, the more people will see them in person, and the more people will want them. I do quite a bit of PSP promotion in another community which isn't related to consoles, and have got quite a few people excited about the PSP, when before they weren't sure about getting one. Even a couple Nintendo fanboys opened their minds a bit and are considering picking one up. I obviously don't think Sony will dominate over Nintendo this round, but it's sure to provide the steepest competition Nintendo's ever faced in the handheld market.

well i personally know that alot of my friends and acqaintances are merely waiting to recover from the massive ammount of cash they wasted on a DS for chrismast or some other item

I wouldn't so much call it a waste. The DS is a decent handheld console, there just isn't many games worth buying for it IMO, and certainly not as many games worth buying as there are for the PSP. Metroid is looking damn nice though, and I'm looking forward to Mario Kart, and any Zelda game they release (other than Four Swords, or anything derived from the Cel-shaded Link of Windwaker). I'd also love to see a new MarioRPG, especially now that Square-Enix is working closer with Nintendo than in the past few years.

If analyst figures are correct, the PSP probably sold close to, if not more than, 500K in its first week or so. That would be roughly equivalent to the Nintendo DS sales performance of the same timeframe. As we all know, the DS hit right at the start of the heavy Christmas buying season.
If the PSP at $100 more and in MARCH has even approximated the level of DS sales for the first week, I'm impressed. I don't know why anyone would have wanted much more - this is good.
Also, it's still pretty early to tell for sure, but I think it took the DS about a month to sell a million in the US, so if it takes the PSP the same or less time, wouldn't that be good as well?
The press sells copy by making stories sensational. Nobody wants to hear about the PSP launch being pretty decent or about the same as the DS launch - they want to see HUGE RECORD-BREAKING SALES or DISAPPOINTMENT and UNEXPECTEDLY LOW SALES on the headlines. Nothing in between.

pixelator is spot on - especially with minimal press coverage (because of Sonys worries about demand problems), the launch could hardly be called a failure? There are so many people continuously wanting to see Sony fail for some reason? The PSP is a wiked device.. with some good marketing and plenty of units, it cant help but sell well :-) The fact 50 out of 150 stores _have_ sold out with practically no advertising.. I think speaks for itself..edited: Apr 05 2005

i think the main issue here is the lack of psp commercials. I've YET to see a psp commercial on any of the tv stations i watch, (which i must admit, is very little, due to the fact that i'm always at work). Most of my friends dont even know what a psp is until i show them, but all of them know what a DS is.
