We were hard at work on the single-player portion of the title for many, many months, when it was agreed upon at the highest levels of BVG and Amaze Entertainment that one of the coolest things about the PSP as a system is the wireless connectivity. With only half the dev-cycle left to go, our team got the go-ahead to expand the scope of the game to include a stand-alone multiplayer feature, which ended up growing into an entire game in and of itself.
So the challenge went from making one great PSP game that explored the world of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," into two great PSP games that explored entirely different aspects of the film.
The Ship Battle Game
The one thing we were lucky on is that the movie is huge. There are so many diverse elements that there was plenty of world left to explore in the game. We realized immediately one major aspect of the film our single-player gameplay experience (play as Jack Sparrow and "fight like a pirate" was missing - those brutal pirate ship battles on the high seas.
There have actually been a large number of naval combat games, across many platforms, so we knew immediately in order to have Pirates stand out we needed to take the great elements of the film - and use those to help us differentiate the gameplay from what else is out there. Watching the first movie again, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," we noticed right away some of the major differences between it, and say, "Master and Commander." The fights in the first film were fast and furious. There were high action scenes, not just excuses to show off how smart the characters were. They incorporated lots of unique elements, such as the supernatural speed of the Black Pearl, and the power of the undead boarding parties. And in the new movie, the ship battles just get more intense!
