A source close to top voice over IP (VoIP) provider Vonage has told T3 that the company is in the process of creating an interface that would allow users to convert the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS into internet-powered phones.

Both devices are compatible with VoIP, as they come with microphones and can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. All they need the necessary interface and software – and that’s what Vonage is working on.

Vonage’s partnership with Wi-Fi operator Cloud means that its customers can get internet – and therefore VoIP – access at over 7,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country – so Vonage stands to gain a whole lotta new customers if it can convince them that their handheld console makes a nifty phone as well as a nifty device for playing Mario Kart on.

Our source didn’t disclose exactly how Vonage would introduce VoIP to these devices, but it could be brought to the PSP in the form of a firmware upgrade and to the DS in a cartridge (like the Opera web browser we reported on recently)

Yeah it was during a press conference sometime in March that Sony revealed how the PSP would get VoIP (and video phone using an EyeToy) later this year (October I think).

Now its getting interesting. I read somewhere a company is putting VoIP through the mobile phone service in the US. You need to have a carrier like T-mobile with a data-capable device (like a Blackberry) and then you can make low-cost international calls. Having Skype on the PSP and using the headset to make free calls would be even better.

I hope it's not a UMD... It would suck to have to run a UMD to make calls. Not practical. Hopefully it will be integrated with the firmware.

It was confirmed at E3 today that the PsP will be getting VOIP in November of this year. Sony's press conference.

ya skype would be tite...hold on a second it says at the top that both the DS and PSP come w/ microphones...the PSP does not include a mic you have to go buy it (which by the way took me forever to find because everyone was sold out when i was really into SOCOM, and now im not into it anymore and they're in stock everywhere)

Forget Vonage, I would prefer Skype. I just cancelled my Vonage account because I never used it.
