Oh EA. If you didn't suck so bad you wouldn't keep getting in these situations. It seems as if the PSP version of Madden '06 is causing some people to have random crashes with their PSPs. While this would just be annoying with other games with Madden if you crash you can lose your stats in franchise mode. Not fun.
The response from the online community hasn't exactly been kind. EA isn't being very helpful in their forums apparently and they've only posted notice of a "work around" that apparently doesn't do much to help the situation. We haven't heard anything about a patch, or a recall, or refunds, or trying to make it right. EA's response seems to be "deal with it."
I know PC gamers are used to this, but not console gamers, and certainly not portable gamers. Considering Madden '06 was supposed to be a high profile game for the PSP at a time when Sony can't seem to be bothered with releasing games, this isn't good press for EA or Sony's troubled system. I guess we still have overpriced movies though, right?
If I were Sony I'd be putting the screws to EA to make this right and do it NOW. EA just settled their overtime lawsuit and are getting heat for buying the NFL license for the next ten years, and now they're opening themselves up to more bad press by pissing off their fan base."

NOBODY BUY ANYMORE EA GAMES!!!!!

yea battlefield 2 - buggy as hell...

And don't forget the bug in the last console version that let the defense completely fatigue the offensive line before the snap, with EA's workaround being to turn off the fatigue option - completely killing any kind of true simulation experience.

strange news post, this is almost an anti-EA post, I thought the news on PSP411 was unbiased?
as for the actual post itself, the reason PC games get patches is because most of the game is installed onto a HD which means files can be patched up, files on a UMD cannot be patched cos its read only (obviously), sometimes a little thought should go into posts instead of mindlessly just slagging off a company you dont like (not blaming you phinal, but Ars really has its head up its arse )edited: Oct 09 2005

I agree that the "patch/ UMD" part was a bit uh silly, but the idea that we shouldn't say anything bad about EA because that's "mindlessly slagging off a company" is equally uh silly, because as a person who paid $50 USD for Madden I was expecting a game that would at least work properly like the rest of them. And what's up with the Madden beta forums anyway, they posted in there saying to work around the problem by simply saving the game every few minutes, along with another "fix" that involved pausing and unpausing the game in order to be able to kick or punt the ball (those are not work arounds, work arounds allow you to play the game as it was intended with little hassle, these do not). After I wrote a blog (island41.blogspot) post about the problems with a link to the madden forums someone temporarily brought them down for some odd reason, but I guess I better stop talking about my quest for customer satisfaction before some disgruntled poster with ties to EA accuses me of "slagging off" EA.These problems make the franchise mode nearly unplayable, a gamble at best and I just hoped we would get a better start from the guys who just bought the exclusive NFL license for the next ten years.

Did EA REALLY advise to save the game every few minutes?

"PC gamers are used to this, but not console gamers"
True I have been screwed by them thouroughly in the past and only bought Burnout very begrudgingly. Though Burnout is good, it has completely frozen 3 times, a problem i have never had with any other console game in my life (starting with atari). I am so anti EA for just this reason. They slap their logo on a game and run the spam adds, but if they sat and played some of the games they would see glaring bugs. here is a PRIMO example: As with many EA games they tacked their EA games music thing on Burnout, but because it obviously wasn't developed with this implemented, changing songs mid race causes a hangup for about 1 second. reading your statement makes me angry for a number of reasons. 1: you can patch a UMD game because they did it with Wipeout, basically implementing patches on the mem stick. 2: You should research EA they are ruthless and don't care about gamers. I for one was a die hard Earth and Beyond player (MMORPG owned by Westwood). Westwood got bought by EA and they liquidated all their online support servers and dropped support for all the Westwood products. So basically there is very strong evidence to refute both of your claims so as you yourself said
"sometimes a little thought should go into posts instead of mindlessly just slagging off"

wow, hold on there a second, i am not sticking up for EA, I am just saying that this isnt really a news article its a rant, sure theres a problem with the game crashing and EA aint exactly helping, but you CANNOT patch a game that isnt designed to be modified via the memory stick. In wipeout this is part of the core programming, its supposed to have levels on the memstick. Games such as Madden have not in any way been coded to allow extra content on the memory stick. If a major flaw was found in Wipeout's main code there is no way they can fix it with a patch, simple as that. My entire comments were aimed at the original article saying PC games can be p-atched so why cant this.
A little know-how from the orinal author would know if you run core code from a CD you cannot patchj it at a later date unless you have built in code that allows patches from the memstick from the offset. The only way EA can fix this is to recall all the copies that have been sold.

I agree it's not a news post, it's someone's rant copy and pasted.
What is Ars anyway?

we should not have to use up our memory for patches to GAMES... I have little enough memory as it is and if every game put out a patch for all their glitches, I would probably have to get a 1gig memory stick before long... If a game has major glitches, they should give us new updated UMD's or make it so we can write onto UMD's and have updates available online or something... I can't afford to waste any memory on game updates... It makes sense that you would have to put system updates on your memory stick but not game updates so the people who don't have enough room on their sticks have to suffer and cannot play the patched version online w/ other people... the patch should be available to anyone, even if they don't have memory left.

EA games are awesome
just not on the PSP

I worked in Tech Support [EA in Chertsey], from Nov 2003 to April this year. The reason why I left is the same reason why the CS Manager along with both Supervisors (one went to Sega?!? in Brentford), is because of this exact thing. EA made massive losses last financial year [mainly because of the PSP being delayed in Europe] and to make up for this they put VERY heavy demands on the development teams, studio teams and QA to push a lot of titles our early to help recover the current quater. This behaviour has continued ever since and as a result, the quality of Gold titles are a TOTAL joke - Does anyone know about TW2005 PS2 - Full European product recall because the game crashed every time you tried to play Seve Ballesteros and cost the company (well Northern Region) millions. For all those "EA fan boys" out there, what you don't realise is all the people involved with making the games are passionate... everyone in marketing and the upper end of the business don't even like games and are pushing out a "Product" (and this could be any product)! Things like CS Support are considered expenses and EA are even considering outsourcing it all to India. No I am not a discruntled ex employee as I loved the people there and what i did, but the reason why so many people have left the company recently, is because it is not about the games anymore and EA basically don't give a sh*t (maybe that is why they dropped from number 9 in the "UK Top 100 companies to work for 2003" to not even within 100 since.) If only u could see the post QA reports with ALL of the bugs found in the actuall games where the producers would sign them off as "Not likely to affect the user experience in the game"! Let me repeat that for you: "Not likely to affect the user experience in the game"
+
Criterion games still f*cking rule though and Black is gonna be awesome (saw it in a Pre E3 event at the Chertsey Campus before I left)!
+
Should have added relating to their massive losses... this is also because of their takeover of Criterion (which will put a massive strain on any publishers/developers wishing to use the Renderware tool), as well as major stakeholder ownership of Dice (Battlefield developers), as well as the massive stake in Ubisoft they now have and are still attempting a hostile takeopver of this company. If EA do get themselves into a position where they fully dominate the publisher/develop arena (and they are close, very close!), u can kiss quality, inovative games goodbye and then it won't even matter how advanced the hardware technology is for our gamers A sad day indeed!
