IGN reports on Sony Pictures Entertainment announcing the final price for UMD movies.
IGN said: "While we still don't know American pricing for video UMDs, Sony Pictures Entertainment has gone on record with plans for Japan. SPE representatives reveal that while the final lineup of releases has yet to be set, Japan will see its first UMD releases in April, similar to America. Pricing for Japan is expected to be in the same range as current DVDs, which the representatives state is between 3,800 yen and 3,980 yen ($36-37)."

Wtf... What a lame price... That expensive for something that takes 3 bucks to manufacture. Somewhere around $20 would've been nice...

They should be made way cheaper for it to take off. 10 bucks tops. It's a very small screen compared to a television that is used to watch dvd's on.

they also say that a prive of dvds in japan are around that price, so expect UMD movies in america to be 20 or less

Hehe, I don't think it's ever gonna be near that price, they would be making about 3 bucks profit off of it... It takes about 3.50 to make the UMD, they make the 3.50 back from that price which leaves 3 bucks left... Remember, Sony is a money whore...

I know the specification does allow for extra's etc but these will never compete with a DVD. If I had a choice between DVD and UMD I'd go for the DVD every time. I'd only ever buy both if they had an off like "Buy the DVD and get the UMD for £5" or something along those lines. If it was a UMD only release (not likely) then I'd go up to £11-£12.

Yes the pricing of products is different here then in Japan. And if thats around the price of a DVD in Japan, then expect them to be around the same price for DVDs here.

They will be the roughly the same price as DVDs here in the US (~$20 MSRP). But even then it is a braindead move by Sony. Video playback on the PSP will always be inferior to a DVD played back on a laptop or a home system. Even with the added benefit that comes with the portability of the PSP, I just don't see UMDs approaching the value of a DVD. All this pricing move will do is encourage people to rip their DVDs to Memory Sticks.
What Sony should do is reduce the price by at least $5 and produce special editions of their movies where you get a DVD & UMD combo for $10 more than the price of the DVD.
My only hope is that this pricing lunacy does not carry over in to their pricing of audio UMDs or music video UMDs. If it does I'm just going to buy another Memory Stick. Maybe that is Sonys' real goal?

come on guys, and how much where dvd's when they were first launched????
and yet again, you guys from america should think yourself lucky, i bet they are gonna be nearer £20 when released over here ($37), DVD's in the UK generally cost from £15 to £18 ($28 to £34)
as for the extra's not matching dvd's that isnt actually strictly correct, they could (in theory) even put a small game on a UMD movie disc

But DVDs offered benefits that VHS could not. UMD movies do not offer anything new over DVDs or a DVD rip played back via Memory Stick (with the possible exception of the games that you can play in the XMB). I just don't see any reason for Sony to think they will sell UMDs at DVD prices, especially when the market is so small and the format is so limited in playback devices.
I have a feeling that UMD over there will be £18, Sony seems to be pricing them according to the local DVD price. If they were more that DVDs that is even more of a boneheaded move than selling them for the same price as a DVD.
