The 2.0 Firmware update released recently has been tested to work on US PSP's. This means you don't have to wait for a browser and wallpapers. Download the Firmware Update directly from Sony Japan.
Instructions
• Download the Firmware Update directly from Sony Japan.
• Put the EBOOT.PSP file in this directory on your PSP:
memory stick drive:PSPGAMEUPDATE
• Go to your [Memory Stick] under [Game] on the PSP menu and click the Firmware update, then follow the instructions.
Features
Here is the full feature list straight from the update file:
• Revisions to strengthen security were added.
• UMD Music can now be played under [Music]
• An Internet browser was added
• Go To was added as a feature under [Video]. (This applies to UMD Video.)
• A-B Repeat was added as a feature under [Video]. (This applies to UMD Video and video data saved on Memory Stick.
• 4:3 Screen Mode was added as a feature under [Video] (This applies to video data saved on Memory Stick.)
• Audio Options was added as a feature under [Video]. (This applies to video data saved on Memory Stick.)
• AVC was added as a codec that can be played under [Video]. (This applies to video data saved on Memory Stick.)
• Support for Memory Stick PRO Duo was added to [Music].
• MP4 (AAC) and WAV (LPCM) were added as formats that can be played under [Music]. (This applies to music data saved on Memory Stick.)
• Image transfer was added as a feature under [Photo].
• Wallpaper was added as a feature under [Photo].
• TIFF, PNG, GIF and BMP were added as image formats that can be displayed under [Photo].
• Korean was added as an option to [System Language] under [Settings], [System Settings].
• [Character Set] was added to [System Settings] under [Settings].
• [Theme Settings] was added under [Settings].
• WPA-PSK (TKIP) was added as a security method under [Network Settings].
• Settings for Infrastructure Mode under [Network Settings] were revised to be easier to use.
• Input modes were added to the on-screen keyboard.
I would suggest not using the Japanese update on a US PSP, simply because if it turns out that it DOES cause an error that no one has encountered yet everyone who updated is going to be screwed.
but aren't the US update and the JAP update the same? i mean, all you have to do to change your psp to japanese is to change the lanquage settings, right?
If you update to Japanese ver 2.0 and something happens to get jacked...could you not just revert to factory settings and wait for the US update eventually? Is this possible or would the Japanese version become the new factory standard?
Also, is there any "solid" news on when the US update will be accessible via the PSP unit itself? If the US and Japanese updates are identical...why then isn't this a universal update?
okay , i had the same problem, it kept saying GAME CANNOT START 822550014 whatever, so what i did was downloaded the Japanese firmware again and emptied my memory card a bit more, and connected my charger, and tried it againm and it worked, i LOVEEEEEEEEEE the browser
just try it again it will work

I would like to repeat "usermanual's" comments... "could you not just revert to factory settings " if you get hosed by the Japanese version (though I think this is unlikely)? Also, would there be diference between the two versions? And if not.... like, usermanual asked... why not a universal? If there was a way to replace the japanese version with the US version, then it would be worth the experiment to try this latest release.
cyb, once you update, the bios is permanently overwritten, there is no back up.. if you download and install the JP update, you'd have to wait until the next update to switch back to US update.. like JP 2.0 to US 2.01
