Apple's iTunes may be in for a rough go if Sony has their say. The company plans to unveil a global music download service underneath its PlayStation umbrella designed to compete with iTunes and other music download outlets.
Currently under development by Sony Computer Entertainment's European branch, the service will allow music to be downloaded to Sony's PSP for a small, undisclosed fee. However, downloads won't be limited to just music. PSP users will also receive free upgrades through the website, and the system boasts potential as a means to download extra content for games.
Following Sony's dip in 2004 profits, the company may be setting its sights on marketing the PSP as a foil to the iPod, rather than a companion.

How is the psp ever going to replace the ipod when it cant hold much more then one or two gig.

sony arent trying to replace the iPod, they are just cashing in on the success of the iPod, oh, and dont forget the fastest selling iPod currently is the iPod shuffle, which comes in 512mb and 1gb models but people are buying it cos of its size. This isnt at all a shock, sony have added music and video capabilities to the PSP for a reason, and its quite obvious this sort of thing would happen at some stage.
It wouldnt surprise me if sony also offer a video downloads outlet aswell, which is something Apple don't have.

if the music isn't crippled by DRM then i'm all for it. Sony was saying how they focused too much on content protection and that it hurt their sales in the past. maybe they'll get it right and let us download in a non-proprietary format like say, oh i don't know..... MP3?

Hmmm Interesting. I have always wondered about joining a music service, but not really having a good portable music player I haven't (I do have a net md player but its the sports model and so its too bulky and I have to save my money anyways, for a PSP! haha). As for it being DRM equipped, I'm not sure. I'm not one who is compelled to share my stuff. Takes too much time and bandwith.

Well, i'd like to know that the songs i buy can be played on my Mac or transfered to another music player i own or burned to a CD for my car. I bought a few songs off itunes and was upset to learn that i couldnt play them on any portable music player except the iPod.

I don't think this will be good. Sony will clearly use thier own media types and make them only compatable with thier products.

But Sony does have many products. And I dont know about you, but if I had any brand loyalty, it would be to Sony.

I dont see how this is a poblem, its been announced that this service is for the PSP, so, one would presume it will use PSP music and video formats (the same website will also be resposible for the distribution of PSP updates i believe)

I just don't like buying music that I can only use in one device. It's like buying a PC game that can only be loaded in a pioneer DVD drive. Pointless for the collectors out there.

psp is to big to be an ipod killer not to mention ipod can hold up to 40gb

I'm all for Sony launching dowloads but as for how many songs the PSP will hold ... surely that depends on how big your memory card is or how many cards you have.
+
and how much compression you've used
As i've already stated, iPod shuffle is only in 512mb and 1gb flavours, and its selling out everywhere, so it seems not everyone needs 20/40gb's worth of music stored constantly on an mp3 player

Yonk, Gamespot has punched a hole in your post. In Gamespot.com's ongoing rumor control feature, they got in touch with SCEE about the itunes like service rumors, and SCEE labled them "misinformation". Here is a link to the article, check out rumor #8:
