Sales of films distributed on Universal Media Disc (UMD), Sony's proprietary disc format for PlayStation Portable, have topped 100,000 according to the platform holder.
Quoting a Sony executive for Benelux, Reuters said the figure did not include copies of the film Spider-Man 2, which was bundled with a great many American PSP units.
UMD films cost between $19.95 and $29.95 in the USA.
Sony's film canon is broadening all the time, the executive said, with releases aimed at demographics outside the traditional 18-25 year-old male gamer demographic expected soon - including releases targeted at women, and cartoons.
New deals are being announced regularly - just this week we've seen Anchor Bay Entertainment pledge six releases, including horror and Manga titles, with the promise of more to come.
Speaking at the ELSPA International Games Summit yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves said "maybe 25 movies" would be available at the European PSP launch this September 1st.
revdreher said: "it's good to hear that UMD aren't doing as bad as it seems. We need even more movies to come out on UMD. Perhaps Saving Private Ryan?"
Sales of UMD movies for the PSP has "...topped 100,000..."
I wonder if they mean wholesale or 'at retail'.
My loco loco Mall*Wart has at least 100 UMD movies in stock - about 20 different titles (roughly) and at least 5 copies per title. Multiply that by 1000 Mall*Wart stores and you've got your 100,000 (+/-) just in the Mall*Wart inventory (let alone other stores).
As the library increses so will sales... But then you have to remember more and more people are getting their hands on 1 gb memory sticks, as well as the tools to rip dvds on to them... soo most people won't find much use in UMD movies as avalibility of memory sticks go up and the prices go down. Just a thought.
