Everyone's favourite Sony PSP newsmaker, President Kutaragi, is being quoted as confirming that not only is a Web browser in the works for the PSP, but also mobile phone capabilities. Depending on what route Sony intends to take with the browser (crippled proprietary poo or fully-featured FireFox), the potential implications are mind-boggling. Everything from Flash games, using the PSP for presentations and more.
Web Browser
PSP411 touched on the rumour of a PSP keyboard, based largely on pictures from the E3 2004 conference. Even though a keyboard has yet to be fully confirmed, it is an integral part of web browsing and can thus be assumed to be coming soon. It isn't yet clear what type of browser it will be, nor how or if it will be crippled in regards to web standards such as CSS, (X)HTML, ActiveX and the like. Perhaps this is Mozilla's chance to get the Firefox browser ported to the PSP? Time will tell, but the computing power of the PSP certainly appears powerful enough to handle a browser comfortably. If Sony does decide to go with a powerful browser, one capable of Flash for example, the implications are incredible. We could one day be seeing 3rd party games and tools made to work in Flash, viewable on the PSP.
The ability to view web pages will exponentially increase the PSP's capabilities. Beyond the obvious web page viewing, people could use the device for presentations and other innovative uses. All of these factors would open up the PSP's market as an incredible tool above and beyond it's current target markets of movies, music and gaming.
Mobile Phones
Details on the mobile phone capabilities are still highly secretive. There is a possibility that it will make use of the PSP's WiFi for VoIP or perhaps a USB based attachment.
More news on these advancements will be available on PSP411.com as they arrive.
Why would it be like the n-gage? The PSP isn't built with a mic, so no, I don't think it'd be anything like the N-Gage. I imagine it would just be an add-on, perhaps USB, that you could put in an external mic/headphone combo, similar to some external bluetooth modules that are sold these days for cellphones.
couple this with the rumors of TV viewing and you have one badass device. Imagine if there was a TIVO like add on -- record television while playing your favorite game.
The latter of your dreams might be a little too intensive for the CPU, triptych. Especially when you consider that the PSP would have to be recording over WiFi while gaming. Doubt it could record while gaming and plugged in via broadband, let alone over WiFi.
Yeah - and the battery life would probably be all of 20 mins. But imagine having an iTunes like service that d/l video to your PC then syncs with psp offline. (one for windows as well as the Mac one I've heard of)
Personally i think this could really be exciting... tv recording I think would be a bit much... Besides, most people do that with their pcs and so why would that need to change? But being able to transfer to psp and watch shows or whatever, that'd be great!
I'm most excited at the potential for usb add-ons. From pics i've seen of the E3 2004 versions, there was a mock-up for a webcam hooked up via USB port. Now, imagine... instead of just a web cam... But a web cam that had a bluetooth adapter, enabling all kinds of bluetooth devices from headsets to keyboards? Hmmmm possibilities are endless :D
Or how about one of these as an add-on? link
It would take some time to get it to a form-factor that would make sense for PSP but if it comes to pass, WOW.
