Lik-Sang has some details on their order page for the first ever UMD demo disc. The disc released by Japanese gaming god magazine Famitsu, contains a demo of Tenchi no Mon.

I assume these things work on the US PSPs as well; otherwise, this would not be of any real value to me...

According to Lik-Sang, it will work worldwide. My guess is that as a game disc, it is region-free, just like all other games. Only UMD movies are region locked.

I wouldn't pay crap for a demo disc. They should be free. After-all, isn't a demo disc's objective to interest the possible consumer into buying the full game? It shouldn't cost jack-squat.

Well it comes with the magazine. Which isn't available in the US.

I would consider buying a UMD demo disc in the US to try out the new games.

I would consider paying a nominal amout fro a demo disk of games. Provided it has a couple of levels each and save capabilities. It would help me choose what I'd like to get.
