20 minutes of cinematics are used to tell the game's story, including an intro sequence where Daxter escapes the guards and finds himself in the game's opening bar. These sequences should also run into the gameplay to keep the game running clean. In fact, although these are not realtime cinematics, the story sequences are all done with the in-game engine, and there will be some story sequences that use the actual game engine instead of hopping out to CG. The opening character intro with Daxter himself (still very early in terms of background art) is an impressive technical demo in and of itself. Daxter is right up in your face on the screen, making faces and posing for the camera. This sequence employs an impressive light fur effect to give close-ups of Daxter character detail.
The gunplay in Daxter uses a spray gun instead of what we thought yesterday was a green flame thrower -- makes sense to us, he's got a fly-swatter in one hand and a bug sprayer in the other. There will not be other weapons (whatever looked to be a nailgun in our demo was probably an early glitch in the particle system, or may have just been short spurts of spray in this beginning stage.) His sprayer, however, can be used for all kinds of functions, and will be powered up throughout the game for other functions. We have already mentioned the ability for the sprayer to let Daxter hover for a short while by propelling himself with shots of spray. By smashing enemies, they drop the yellow Metalhead gems, which will work as currency in the game to upgrade abilities. Other items to collect include green globs to activate and power up your sprayer, as well as Precursor Orbs hidden in the stages for Daxter to collect.
