Gamers can be an anal lot. Adding skins to their consoles, getting the right cases for their collection, it's all part of the respect had for games. You don't have to drop $350-$600 on an imported PSP to appreciate the value of keeping your new toy clean and protected. To help you in your fight against dirt, scratches and even sagging battery power, two North American manufacturers are already announcing PSP Accessories. With still a few months to go before a domestic launch, Nyko and Intec have disclosed some information about their PSP gear.

Nyko

With a 10 year history in gaming accessories, Nyko is by no means a new entrant. The companies line of hand cooling and wireless controllers are well known. At this year's CES 2005, Impress Watch took some photos of what appear to be prototypes of Nyko accessories that were recently announced. Keep in mind that these photos are most likely of unfinished products.

Screen Armor PSP

This is simply a metal device that can attach onto the PSP to cover the screen so as to prevent any scratches. For those who require maximum pocketability but want to keep their unit protected, this may be a great choice. While the though of putting anything metal over the screen sounds cringe worthy, the focus is obviously on protection. That said, why metal was chosen as opposed to a tougher and potentially lighter material is unclear.

Theater Experience PSP

As you begin converting movies and shows to watch on your PSP, you'll surely want to prop the unit up against so you're not stuck holding the unit for 2 hours. Not only does Nyko's Theater Experience prop up the PSP, it also includes two speakers. Nyko claims that by using these built-in speakers, you'll be able to increase play time threefold. All of this adds up to an incredibly portable media experience.

PSP Charger Case

This item does duty not only as a slightly large case that helps to protect against shock, scratches and even water, it also charges the unit when plugged in. Interestingly, this case will purportedly extend play time threefold. How that will be accomplished is yet to be known or disclosed.

Intec

Intec is a slightly newer company started in 2001. You'll know them for their game screens that attach directly to the console, but they also release racing wheels, controllers and more. The line up of PSP accessories from Intec includes some essential gear that will be made available at PSP launch.

Adapters

Intec has two adapters in mind, an AC Adapter for home use and DC Adapter for car use. The DC Car Power Adapter will be a welcome accessory for those of you who like your road trips. However, it's not entirely clear why there is a need for another AC Adapter, unless it's cheaper and charges the battery more quickly.

Cases

Keeping in mind the PSP's intended demographic, Intec will be releasing a Premium Leather Carrying Case. Those who aren't crazy about leather will have a choice of three aluminum cases that come in varying sizes. There is a large case with space for accessories, a smaller version and an even smaller, slim case that is intended to protect the PSP. A much needed accessory, the UMD game case will also be made available. Rounding out the protective accessories will be a Screen Lens to protect against dust and scratches.

Docking

Similar to Nyko's Theater Experience, sans the speakers, Intec will also have it's own dock for propping up the PSP. The Adapter is not included.

Intec's line of accessories will be priced $6.99 to $39.99 and also be available in two kits, a Pro Gamer's Kit that includes the Screen Lens, DC Car Power Adapter, Neck Strap, Game Case, Dock and Earphones. The more stripped down Start Kit will feature Earphones, Screen Lens and a DC Car Power Adapter.
