Well this is my first guide for this wonderful PSP Resource Site that a friend gave me. And with all this wonderful information, I decided that I wanted to contribute my own guide. In this guide, I will walk you through ripping your DVD to a format that will be compatible with the PSP.
• PSP
• Memory Stick DUO (preferably 512MB to 1GB for best quality)
• DVD Drive
• DVD
• About 2-8GB of HDD Space
• SmartRipper
• PSP Video 9
Now first thing you need to do is decide on what DVD you want to rip. This can be anything from a 2 hour movie to an episode of your favorite TV show. Now obviously, depending on the length of your video, the size of the file will be larger. So be prepared to make room for these files on your computer.
Now you need to put your DVD into the DVD drive of your computer. Now start up SmartRipper. It will check the drive to see if it can read the files or not. If all works you will get a new window with a lot of stuff on it. Now first thing you need to do is click on the Settings button. Under File - Splitting, select max-filesize and under max-filesize type 9999. Hit Ok to save the settings. Now on this screen, you will see some words like Program Chain, Angle 1, etc. Now one of the angles in the Program Chain will be highlighted. This will also have a timestamp in [] next to it. This is your main movie.
Now most likely, you only want one language and you speak that language so no subtitles are needed. So click the Stream Processing tab and click on Enable Stream Processing. Now you will see stuff like Audio English, Subtitles Espanol, etc. Select the Audio you want and uncheck all the others. Also uncheck all the subtitle streams. Now after this is done, click on the Folder at the bottom of the window and pick a file name for the DVD files and select a folder to save them in. Make this file name something relevant, like Family Guy - 01 - Death Has A Shadow. You will need this for the PSP to know what the video is. When all of this is configured click the Start button. Now the ripping process may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. It all depends on how fast your computer is. After it's all done, close the program.
Now it's time to open up PSP Video 9. First thing you need to do is hook up your PSP to your computer via a USB Cable. After you do this click on Setup on PSP Video 9 and on PSP Drive, click Auto Find. You can also specify a different video output directory, but it's not necesary. You can also change the Default Profile to your liking. I prefer 368x208, 29.97fps, 768kbps Stereo, 128kbps myself, but it's up to you. The resolution (e.g. 320x240) is how your video will look. 320x240 is standard, and 368x207 is widescreen (native PSP resolution). Take your pick between the two. Now you need to decide on the bitrate (e.g. 768kbps). The higher this is, the better the quality, but the larger the file size. So i'd recommend 768kbps for someone with a 512MB stick, and 1500kbps for someone with a 1GB stick. You'll want to leave the framerate at 29.97fps and the audio bitrate at 128kbps for the best quality.
Now that you've picked your video settings, click Convert at the top of the window and click Convert New Video. Now you just need to pick the VOB file that you ripped with SmartRipper. Once you select the video file, the encoding will start automatically with your defualt settings. When it's done, click on Copy and you will come to a PC and PSP file browser window. Now click the video file you just made (should look like M4V10001.MP4) and click on Copy Video to PSP. After you do this you can watch your new DVD video on your PSP via your Memory Stick!
