With the added support for RSS feeds, it only makes sense to take advantage of this feature. The best way, in my opinion, is to make your music library on your computer available to your PSP. This can be accomplished in a short amount of time.
This is just one way to do it. There are other servers that you use. I've tried Apache and didn't like it very much. I've also been told to use Windows IIS, but I am using Windows XP Home Edition, so that option isn't available to me.
This is a walkthrough of one way to make your music library available to your PSP, wirelessly. It is in baby steps, so it makes it a bit easier for people who have had trouble with this kind of thing.
Once you download the PSP RSS Feeder, extract the contents to the folder with all of your music. The feeder will allow you to select which song to listen to. For organization purposes, I used MP3Organizer to put my music into folders based on "Artist". You don't have to do this, but I find it to be much easier to navigate and find what I want.
That is all you need to do with the PSP RSS Feeder.
Installing PHP5
After you download PHP5, run the installer. Once installation has complete, move onto setting up the server. Remember the install directory that you use because you'll need it later. By default, it is C:PHP.
Installing and Configuring The Web Server
Download the free version of Abyss (X1). During the installation of the server, you'll be promted to make a username and password for access to the console. Use something that you can easily remember. Go to the configuration page in your web browser (localhost:9999 by default).
Click the "Configure" button next to "Default Host On Port 80" in the hosts table. Then select "General" and change the Documents Path to the folder with your music in it. Click OK.
Then click on "Scripting Parameters". Make sure that "Enable Script Execution" is checked. On the "Interpreters" table, click "Add". For the "Interpreter" field, click "Browse" and find the file "php-cgi.exe". It is in the folder that you installed PHP5 ("C:PHPphp-cgi.exe", by default). Change the "Type" drop down menu to "PHP Style". Make sure that "Use the associated extensions to automatically update the Script Paths" is checked. At the "Associated Extensions" table, add "php" to the list (again, leaving out the quotes).
On the same page is a table called "Custom Environmental Variables". Click Add and enter these values:
If you didn't put your MP3s into folders, your page will look different, but it's not a big deal.
Using It With Your PSP
If you are in the same network as the computer that is running the server, all you need to do to access your RSS Feed is enter your local IP address into the PSP Web Browser. If you don't know your local IP address, do this:
Go to "Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig" and hit enter. It will say IP Address and then some numbers. In my case, it's 192.168.x.xx. It depends on what kind of router/access point you are using.
If you want to access your music library from outside of the network (over the internet), then you need to either use your IP that is provided by your ISP, or use a DNS service, such as no-ip.org, to bind a domain (yourdomain.no-ip.org) to your IP address. They have several subdomains to choose from, and the service is free.
That's correct, it doesn't have style info... because your browser doesn't suppoert rss feeds it's trying to parse it as a page.. but it's a good way to check the xml
does your ip address and paths show correctly in the xml?
I have figured out the problem with the constant pausing in my mp3 stream!!!!!!!!!!!!! As i suspected, the method that is posted here to stream mp3s is flawless. I fixed the constant pausing by switching my router's wireless setting from "mixed mode" to 802.11b mode only. I found out that the PSP's network card transmits and recieves in 802.11b mode. THX people for all your help and thought i would let you all know how i fixed my problem if anyone encounters it.
I dunno about you guys, but when I try to stream my music to my PSP (i.e. in RSS channel), I'm still getting the communication with the server failed (80431064) error. I can DL them to memory stick fine though. I have a D-Link DI-524 router that can switch between "mixed mode" to "G mode" only, and switching that setting hasnt helped (but thanks anyway dshortey). Really want to solve this, but dont know what do. Please help, cheers
I use the exact same Router and don't have this problem....make sure you have the latest firmware for it. I will check some settings. This could be something to do with the firewall you are using. I will get some screen shots to let you see my settings....this takes some time...
Northwst, I use Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall and have had no port blocking problems to speak of. I will check to see if the router firmware is the latest version - from D-Link's website. Thanks for your inputs dude!
ok sorry this took so long...been busy... here are the pics of the settings I have. link some may not be necessary but take it for what it is worth. I also dont know if it matters....but I have my directories for my music set up as alias's in Abyss. Let me know if this helps any.
Still no luck streaming, half of the settings available on your DI-524 arent there on mine (I have firmware version 2.03), but I have copied all of what I can on yours over to my router's settings (you have firmware version 3.20, which is US only I think). It must be a firmware thing, as the latest version I can find from dlink.co.uk is 2.03, and it still aint working... any ideas? Oh btw i didnt bother with setting up my directories as "alias's" in Abyss, is that a problem?
ok I did'nt think they would have diff. firmwares...(why make it hard) make sure that there are not limitations with your router from the website....most likely not... Next see if you can view your music in a webbrowser like IE or Firefox, and go all the way to where you can click on an individual song...and play it in your player of choice...(this is streaming) but not to your PSP.... if it works good then there is an issue with your PSP settings or the way it is interacting with your router, or just a slow connection... I would also check all of your settings in Abyss and also in your PHP.ini file...make sure the settings are what the tutorial states.... Abyss has a preconfigured PHP5 package for there server.
I am sure you have tried some of this already...just posting it for everyone.
Lastly.... try just putting a larger video or audio file in the root of the server and see if you can stream it thru your browser to a media player...this will rule out the RSS Feeder...
also I use Alias's because my muisc is not in the root of the webserver and I dont want an address 40 characters long....ie. c:windowsmediamusicmymusicblahblah... it is easier to use the alias to go to /mymusic....I dont know if it effects streaming....it might if your music is not in the root of the server....windows or zonealarm may be blocking it.
yo, i can view my music fine on firefox. Even when i click the RSS button for a particular group i get this msg:
This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
So i know my browser aint supporting RSS feeds, but the song info was shown correctly on the page (Thanks DCLXVI for that tip).
Another thing, when i tried clicking on an individual song, a window came up saying:
Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at 192.***.*.*.
What does this mean? Does the fact that my internal ip address ends in a "" have anything to do with it. Cause i havent seen anything else like that before. Just thinking of all the possibilites of what it could be thats all. My settings in abyss follow the tutorial's exactly.
So atm, i cant try out streaming any files, big or small. Btw, i can still DL files to memory stick though, if that means anything. Thanks for sticking to this.
Well the backslash you speak of is wierd...I have never heard of that.... I have tried to connect to my music using my local address of 192.168.0.102 and it connects just fine....be sure to find your local address using this part of the tutorial
"Go to "Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig" and hit enter. It will say IP Address and then some numbers. In my case, it's 192.168.x.xx. It depends on what kind of router/access point you are using."
once you know that this is the local address of the computer that is running the server try it again....using the local address....
If this does not work you may try and access your music over the internet... find your ip address here link this will also let you check to see if your ISP is blocking any ports...which you can change in the server to something that is not blocked...like 8080 try to access your music using your internet IP address.... for instance you can see my site using my ip of 67.171.217.171 ... this will keep you busy for a while...
Ok, first of all the ip address in cmd is the one I have been using this whole time (checking just to be sure :D). I tried accessing my music from both my local address and over the internet. ZA firewall lets me through fine, but I am still getting that damn backward slash at the end of the address for both of them. I tried RSS streaming the music on your server, and it works fine, the whole process is flawless. Something's wrong at my end...
The canyouseeme.org tool says: I could not see your service on 81.xxx.xxx.xx on port (80). Infact, it says that for every single port I tried on there! My firewall definately isnt causing the blockage, what is, is it my ISP (NTL)?? Shall I just reinstall abyss, with the newish 1.0p script??
Yes, use the newest feeder from DCLXVI which is 1.0p.... but I dont think I can help you much more with whats going on.... Try and use a different port for the server....such as 8080 and see if that works.... I would contact your ISP if you need more assistance with your IP....
I think there is some setting that we are missing that is blocking you from getting to your music.....it is strange that you can download them, but it wont stream them....
I am speculating here but... I think you are not using the newest version of the Feeder... and you are saying you can download your music from your site but you cannot add an RSS feed to your PSP... If you CANNOT add an RSS feed you NEED to upgrade to 1.0p DCLXVI has fixed the feeder to work with Abyss.... if I am wrong sorry... I have some questions....
1. are you accessing your music files thru the feeder interface on your PSP? What do you see?
2.Can you add an RSS feed to your PSP from your feeds?
I know you have anwsered some of these before..... I just thought of something.... delete all of your RSS feeds from your PSP and then re add them.... I have noticed they dont work correctly if you change the folders around or move the music even if the folders are the same...This is a good thing...because if someone subscribes to an RSS feed and then later you change the content and password protect it... they will not be able to get the files streamed...it comes up with a communication error... I hope you follow me here.... Just start from scratch and see what happens....
Northwst, sorry I think I misled you from my previous post: I've been using the new 1.0p rss feeder all along. As for your questions...
1) Yes I am accessing my music through the feeder interface on my psp. I see it exactly as the image displayed in the tutorial, just like being on pc.
2) Yes, I can add RSS feeds as channels to my PSP from my site's feeds peferctly. But once they are on the PSP, I cant stream them, getting the communication error instead.
Btw, I DO change the folders, and move around / replace my music in my music folder regularly using the "mp3 organizer" application mentioned in the tutorial, but I dont user password protection. So I do understand what you are saying here, and I think we could be finally be getting to the problem at hand. I'll install everything again, but KEEP MY FILES AS THEY ARE. Thanks for the tip.
Do you know anything about the backslash thing at the end of my ip address like whats causing it and how I can get rid of it?
