If you're like me and you have an extra 256mb or bigger duo card lying around you can turn your PSP into a boot device for Win XP. Tom's Hardware made a guide to make a USB flash card a boot device and this works flawlessly with the PSP.
As a side note any of you running Windows x64 like me this guide can't install XP x64 on your PSP it only works with 32 bit versions. To clarify I did install XP on the PSP while running x64 but I had to use the win XP SP2 professional disc since the x64 disc won't work.
It's not stupid... You are completly missing the point. You windows install disks wont do this.
This is a way for you to mount your hard drive when it crashes. You boot windows and activate computer hardware from files running on the PSP. You can then access the PC harddrive to copy off what data you can (or repare corruption, etc).
Windows boot disks or CD will not do that for you. This is a great tool to have in your kit when working on computers.
I have a 150MB PE setup (Preinstalled Environment). I simply back up my PSP memory stick to my PC. Copy the PE folder contents to the root of my memory stick, then plug that into the dead PC. Put the PSP in USB mode, turn on the PC and it will boot completly from the files on the PSP and not from the harddrive of the computer.
No snowboy... You dont understand... Windows CD or discs wont do what this does. It doesnt let you load windows.. It loads the BartPE...
If you dont know what the BartPE is and how to use it, then you dont even know what this guide is really saying. So you cant say "Save the discs"...
With the discs you can only reinstall windows...
With this you can fix files that are normally in use, copy data to and from your hard drive without loading windows, and lots of other things. Things you cant do with windows discs.
I had a laptop that crashed... windows would not boot. Drive repair utilities would not work. Nothing. Loading this, I was able to copy off most of the important data. There is no other way that could have been done unless you have a way to slave laptop drives to other computers. Something to do that costs at least $100...
Thanks... I just stumbled back into this thread and just wanted to set things straight... Not so much for snowwboy's stupidity, but more so other people can realize how great this thing is and how it can really bail you out of a jam... But thanks Tubtak.
