Coded Arms is KINDA cool, but the controls are really tough. You had better get used to using all the buttons or else you won't enjoy it.
The game itself, in all honesty, doesn't really grab you; doesn't make you feel like you just gotta keep playing. I haven't played it in a while, and frankly, I don't miss it!
90
The day I picked up Coded Arms I had already enjoyed the submisive first person combat against creatures twice as fast at half the size. Although half of them are in fact a shotgun blast away fron an immediate demise, the game no doubt brings the adrenalin in the system as you carfully walk between rooms to ensure no unwanted suprizes. however. The farther you get, the less you seem to gain. The backgrounds are all extremly similar and no matter were you go the map seems to be the only way to make sense of any level. All in all the game is just as fun, if not funner, than any other first person shooter on the PSP. Just be carful, there is something missing about the game and I just can't put my finger on it.
92
Good game, controls are a bit funny, but you can get used to it. I am not very far into it, but it seems to be too similar. Still, pretty good.
85
This game is very good if you are REALLY into the whole FPS scene. I am and I like it so far. I would recommend this to anyone who is into FPS, and only them.
93
This game is loads of fun. I got it and gave it a try and at first, I thought it was terrible and boring. Then my friend got it and we began playing multiplayer and I was instantly hooked.
Controls were really easy to get used to since set C is exactly the same as the Quake II for PSP controls (well, other than zoom since Q2 doesn't have zoom :D).
The game feels a little repetitive, but I found myself playing the game for hours anyways. Bosses are really fun, too.
After beating the game, you unlock a mode called "Infinity Mode", which is basically what it's name implies. You get to play every single sector and fight all the bosses all over again (it's randomized so it isn't the same).
Reasons why this game didn't get a 100 from me:
1. A tad repetitive. -2
2. Extremely laggy when you get to level 100+ in "Infinity Mode". -5
I recommend this game to anyone looking for a pretty lengthy game.
P.S. I suggest you do this mod: link With control set C, you use the analog nub to aim and the default one just wasn't cutting it. I did that mod and I saw incredible progess. 95% of my shots hit.
P.P.S. I played the whole game without auto-aim using that mod.
85
This is one of the few FPS that ive played and is great. Smooth gameplay, good weapons, Greeeaaatt graphics. Im truly impressed with this, however the controls do mix me up sometimes. But overall very good.
30
When I first played it it was fun, it was fairly easy. Then all of a sudden it got EXTREMELY hard! This game is extremely repetetive and has NO replay value WHATSOEVER. All it is the the same places over and over but each time it has more people that are harder to kill, and new weapons to help you kill them. Theres so many enemies it's ridiculous. My PSP would lag of all the enemies there were. All in all do not spend money on this game unless you wana play a very challenging repetitive FPS.
76
I rarely play FPS games. This is a passable shooter to me, but the only shooting game I play are Timesplitters and the Metroid Prime demo for DS. The graphics are nothing to get excited over, but they wont make you throw up. The sound is very repetitive techno. The controls are passable , but it's hard to shoot enemies exactly like you would like. The enemies are sometimes so dark that they blend in and you can't see them. But it is realitively easy until you get to Sector 2.
75
A government combat training simulator has malfunctioned, creating a virtual battlefield swarming with deadly enemies. Armed with a variety of futuristic and conventional weapons, players will experience intense firefights while delving deeper into the core of the unchecked system.
Basically, you're one of many hackers otherwise known as Coded Ones. You're going to be given alot of money if you manage to completely hack this government simulator. But this isn't any kind of hacking, to hack it you must plug in and fight your way through each section full of various types of enemies.
There are 30 weapons to collect in the game ranging from automatic rifles to rocket launchers, grenade launchers, pistols, snipers and gatling guns. These weapons play a larger role than normal since each weapon has an attribute and certain enemies are weak against certain attributes. For example Bullets are less effective against Bugs but do good damage to Human enemies.
Graphically the game has some shortcomings, this is mainly due to the dull environment you are playing it. Even though Konami were right to make things look digital since you're hacking a simulator it still feels extremely repetetive playing through levels that all look the same. Fortunately to keep things fresh we have randomly generated maps and enemies. Every mission you do is randomly generated with enemies in different positions with different weapons and different item drops. This is the only thing that will keep the replay value up.
The music is the main downside for me, it's not that great but it does keep with the digital theme so it could have been worse. But considering this game is a product of Konami I was expecting a better quality of sound. Weapon and enemy sounds are spot-on though, everything sounds and feels great from weapons.
As for lifespan you have the randomly generated maps and after completing the game you can unlock Infinity Mode which does exactly what it says on the tin; you play through a neverending game collecting all the items and armor you still havn't received from the main game. As you go further enemies get harder so this is a great challenge for people who may consider themselves pro's.
For Konami's first try at an FPS game which to make it harder was designed for a handheld system this isn't such a bad try at all. Let's hope that if there is ever a sequal Konami will learn from their mistakes and offer us something alot better.
86
This game is hard to play at first until you get use to it. Then it will be more fun blasting the heck out of your enemies. I have this lag when I switch to my sniper rifles though, but I'm not sure if you guys have this problem. Multiplayer should've been online for more enjoyment since its more fun when you're playing random people with different skills.
88
It's better than the reviews give it, a great game.
88
The game was good but the levels aren't realy randomly generated a whole lot. A lot of people say that it's hard to control but after you play for about 5 minutes you get used to the controls. Overal I say that the game was good.
85
I don't know what's with all the bad reviews on this game. I'll admit the controls are a bit iffy but I found the gameplay was smooth and thought I would like to see some more enemies. But other than that I like it. I would suggest it for people who are willing to work through the control problems.
83
Bad thing about this game is that it's only WiFi. Would have been better if it had infurstructure.
95
Don't always believe what you read from other people, this game is great and a super time waster.
Graphics - 80
Makes great useof the PSP's power, but sometimes, it's a strain on your eyes.
The reason for this, is because most of the levels use dark colors and lots of flashing lights and such. Not very good if you plan to play this for a straight 8 hours, maybe if you take a break once in a while.
Sound - 100
The weapon sounds pack a good bang. Especially the Assualt Rifle.
Playability - 100
The game is FRANTIC. Enemies will be coming from all sides. The boss levels have a good difficulty. Basically, this game isn't easy.
Overall - 100
If you want your imidiate gratification, the get this game. GET IT NOW.
85
This game is pretty well made, clean and crisp graphics, with excellent sound. Once you play this game, you'll keep on wanting to play it. Rent it yourself or buy it, you'll be more than satisfied!
90
I got this game very soon after its release and was impressed with it overall. Being a huge fan of FPSs I couldn't wait to get my hands on this. I think it was worth it in the end despite some flaws.
Load times - 95
When I booted up the first thing I noticed was that the load times were excellent compared to the other games I own, often finished in less than 7 seconds.
Gameplay - 80
This wasn't bad, but I noticed the maps were fairly repetitive, AI was both fairly dumb and higly effective. Sorta DOOMish: move, aim at you, shoot. But it was more sophistiacted in some respects, such as with snipers and reflectors. I thought that 30 weapons was a lot and should be fun, but when there are 30 separate weapons all requiring their own distinctive ammo, it becomes frustrating to keep your weapons full. Also, you can't tell what you're picking up until you do it. Playability was excellent other than these flaws.
Graphics - 95
This game looks very slick graphically. This is normally what I use to show off my PSP. They don't get much prettier than these outside the racing genre.
Sound - 75
There are few things more satisfying then that grinding click the sniper rifle makes when reloaded. Overall, the sound effects for the guns are excellent. The shotgun sounds incredibly powerful, and I don't normally like reloading in games, but this one it's all right due to badass sound effects. HORRIBLE, repetitive techno music plays WHENEVER there's an opponent nearby, which ruins the suspense unless you turn it off, which makes it boringly quiet.
Controls - 95
Very impressive and workable within minutes unless you're a wuss who likes to go around complaining about that kind of thing: "OMG where's my Mouse and Keyboard?!" Get over it. They made a working control system, ESPECIALLY if you're a Southpaw or ambidextrous (like me).
Single player - 85
Dull AI and scarce ammo make it kind of annoying. There are a few points when a level can take 7 minutes, and you have 3. On your next try you have to remember not to pick up that trigger item, or else you can't win. Overall, very fun and addictive.
Multiplayer - 100
This is absolutely excellent. I would be on my PSP constantly if this supported infrastructure. But since I have 3 friends who have this, 4 player battles are easy to get going in addition to being hysterical. -"Dude where did you go?!" -"I'm on your head. Reloading my shotgun." -"HAHAHA DOUBLE KILL! ROCKETS RULZ!"
89
Before I bought this game, I read quite a few reviews because I wasn't sure if this was the game I wanted to buy or not; but in the end I bought it. And just to be clear, I love it.
I popped the game in the PSP, and selected the game. A couple of developer names come up and then a pretty cool video. I mean, it's not as pretty as BattleField 2 or Halflife 2 but man... It's pretty S.W.E.E.T. I was surprised that the game was as clear as it was. I was expecting quite a bit worse.
Controls - 100
I must say that those who trash these controls are completly wrong: if you don't like their controls, change them. If you say that the controls suck, it's you that suck at changing them.
Load Times - 95
The first load time I was kind of scared. It goes to 2% then stops for like 10 seconds and I thought:"OMG, I am going to die waiting for this game." but after that it goes quite a bit faster.
Gameplay - 75
Although lots of fun, the gameplay is very,VERY,VERY repetitive. It is the same kind of levels 13 times in a row followed by a different kind of level. The three kinds of levels are: base (a futuristic level), City (just like a poor(might I add very poor) old Japanese city and Ruins (just lke any old ruin). Although each adds different variants to mixture of the game, in my opinion it would have been better to mix up the levels a bit.
Graphics - 85
The graphics in this game are very clear and well designed and the reloading animations are realistic. They could be a bit better.
Overall - 88.75
A fun game for anyone but sure to be great for FPS fans. I highly recommend this game to any PSP owner and am heartily waitng for a sequel(if there is one).
70
Don't get me wrong. As you can tell by my score I like the game (not love) and ALL FPS are repetitive -- point, shoot, rinse, repeat. This is not a bad thing as long as there is nice scenery, a good story, or possibly both (and yes a few even have more than that)!
This game does not have nice scenery. And no plot to be found! Something about it, though, makes me come back and play again and again!
The sound is decent, the weapons are of a nice variety, and the enemies are (somewhat) unique. I thought the day I bought it that I would be selling it/trading it in soon, but I think it's a keeper! I just keep going back to play it!
81
Coded arms suprised me when I popped it into my PSP, as I was expecting a less than average shooter. My expectations were shattered though, after playing through the training levels and a couple of missions. The graphics were crisp, clean and sharp. The sound was superb (I use noise canceling Bose headphones). I could hear an enemy's footsteps and tell where they were in the room.
Now lets get to the cons. The enemy A.I. can be very cheap at times, and depending how the levels are generated (they are random every time) you may run into a room full of cheap kill bosses. Other than that I find Coded arms a great entry into the FPS genre for the PSP. If your into FPS, get Coded arms.
90
I think it's my best game and I have several.
38
I think it is pretty good, except the controls, which can easily be changed. But it's worth the money.
71
I thought it was OK. Not bad for the first FPS on PSP but not super either. I found it addictive for several hours through. Rent this game because it does get boring. This will be in the bargain bin by next year for $20.
66
I haven't finished Coded Arms yet, but here is my review so far.
Graphics: Solid graphics for an FPS. Weapons and enemies look great and the environment you are in is also quite good looking. 4/5
Sound: Guns sound good, but some actual music, or the ability to use your own MP3s would be nice. I listened to my iPod while playing for some decent killing tunes. It really lacked in this department. 2/5
Control: Great layout for the PSP device itself, worked just like many FPSs. The quick select came in handy, especially for the reload glitch. Targeting could have used some work. 4.5/5
Gameplay: The story itself is nothing really special, pretty generic if you ask me, and it isn't explained in the game. The random maps are also pretty basic, where most have about 3-6 rooms, and 1-3 of those actually have enemies. It made things kind of repetitive and each Sector was pretty much the same with different skins on them. 3/5
Special Considerations (First-Person Shooter): Though the weapons were somewhat generic with different properties, they looked great and were pretty cool. Some could go though, mainly the elemental pistols, especially the light and virus pistol, and some of the grenades were not so spectacular even getting them late in the game. Powerups did help at certain points in the game, but I found one locked room with only 0-damage in it, kinda boring for me. 3/5
Overall: Good game if you want a FPS for your PSP, it's no Half-Life or Halo, but it's a good buy and I would recommend it to an average gamer who would like to add a shooter to their game collection.
66
This game lacks alot. First off, there are only 6 worlds with like 17 in all 3 whiich is kinda stupid. Don't buy it, rent it if you can cause you could probaly beat the game. You will probaly play it for like 3 days and then you will get bored of it. Too bad there is no internet play.

In the future mankind’s technological abilities grow to such a degree that the human mind may interact directly with virtual reality by way of a newly developed neurodigital interface. Out of this technology comes the A.I.D.A., a military training program through which advancing warriors can train for combat simulations. Though the program is terrifically advanced and useful it falls out of regular use and is neglected, eventually becomes a chaotic virtual wasteland. Ignored for years, the A.I.D.A. gains the interest of hackers, who jack into the system searching for digital riches. Most of these hackers, however, frustrated by the terrible control scheme of the A.I.D.A. And repetitive, uninspired level design, eventually give up and go back to playing Lumines. Coded Arms is the first FPS for the PSP and does a terrific job of embodying all of the reasons for why a first person shooter will not work on a portable system.
Worst things first; the controls are abysmal. The game offers four different control setups (A, B, C, and D) and each of these control schemes are customizable, seemingly communicating to the player, "We, the developers, can’t figure out how to create a functional control setup for this game. You figure it out."
Once one finally chooses which control scheme they wish to slog through the next problem to confront is the actual use of the controls. The game utilizes both the X and Y axis for aiming and as a result players will find themselves frustrated by the inability to aim, move, and shoot at a speed similar to that of a first person shooter on a PC. The controls are unresponsive and, ultimately, unintuitive. The game is severely in need of a second analog stick to be at all playable.
As the controls are recognizably difficult to use, let alone master, one would think that the developers would have created an immersive, quality world which would give a player the incentive needed to overcome the obstacle that is the control scheme. Unfortunately this is not the case. The levels are repetitive and boring. While they are randomly generated most people won’t notice it, as the degree to which the levels actually vary is unnoticeable. The entire experience misses the goal of being a nostalgic reminder of games past and is instead tedious, boring, and ultimately a disappointment.
The story is a very mixed bag. While the setting for Coded Arms is interesting the game quickly becomes just another first person shooter. There is no recognizable story to draw players into the game and the level setup is jarring. Players are initially presented with an option of three levels to play at the beginning of the game and are not given instructions for which path to pick. This prevents the player from experiencing any sense of immersion in the game.
Without friendly controls or an inviting story the only thing that could possibly save Coded Arms would be the graphics, and they fail as well. The game is very pretty, but the graphics fail to enhance the game. Instead of harmonizing with the game the graphics are a disconnected, intangible aspect of the game which frustrate rather than enthrall.
The sound effects are the standard stock of gunshots, enemies grunting, and the such. The soundtrack features various techno sounds all of which do nothing to help the overall gaming experience.
There had to be a first FPS for the PSP and unfortunately Coded Arms is what we got. The uninspired gameplay and level design fail to provide an incentive for overcoming the terrible controls while the pretty graphics do little more than showcase the PSP’s ability to generate fairly appealing walls. As the first FPS for the PSP everyone ought to experience this game in some form or another. I suggest borrowing a friends copy, playing for half an hour, and then giving up.
30
Oh Coded Arms, I gave you so many chances. When I realized that the whole point of the game was "move into room, kill whatever moves, advance", I kept playing. When I realized that the only thing separating the different levels was the textures, I pressed on. When you refused to give me ammo for the only useful weapons in the game, I began to falter. I'll confess that much.
But DAMN, did you guys not even play this boring thing before you released it? I mean, we're talking about the game that I'd anticipated since E3, the game that I'd followed religiously, watched all the gameplay footage, read all the previews, thought about preordering, and I couldn't even play it for longer than 2 days before shipping it back to Gamefly.
Anyway, if there's a bright side to all this, the game at least gave me hope about the future of FPS's on the PSP. I had read a lot of press saying that the PSP wouldn't be able to handle shooters because of the lack of a second directional pad / joystick. Well, let me just say that these fears are unwarranted. Coded Arms controlled just fine and any Halo or 'Splitters fan should be able to get used to it in maybe 10 minutes.
Now if they could only make an FPS that worth a damn on this crazy machine.
78
Controls: They aren't as bad as I heard, I compare them to Dreamcast FPS controls. Passable considering the the way the game is built. They allow you to play the game reasonably well.
Gameplay: Super shallow, think Doom3d with better graphics and jumping.
Graphics: Relatively good, they have the cool coding effect when levels load. Compared to modern FPS; not impressive. Probably one of the best looking PSPgames though. Compared to a game on GBA it is amazing.
Buy? No way unless your super desperate for some multiplayer FPS action
Rent? Worth getting just to play a FPS on the go if you're into FPS.
86
Coded Arms is the first FPS for handheld, and baby, it aint too shabby!
Graphics - 70
The graphics are purdy, but nothing special. For those who enjoyed console style graphics in NFL Streets 2 and Metal Gear Acid, dont get your hopes up. The graphics reminded me of a super duper version of the N-Gage. The only thing going is the lighting, and some of the weapons, and effects.
Story - 40
Hardly any story, just that you're a Hacker who hacks into a rogue Military Training program in the not so far future. This program, was design for combat training, but went crazy during the production. Hackers wanted to hack it, and people wanted to make cash/game out of it. And the rest is all fuzzy.
Sound - 20
Annoying techno music, only when enemys is around. Think Splinter Cell when you're in trouble, but really really really annoying.
Gameplay
Actually good, the only thing holding Coded Arms together. The gameplay reminded me of Halo kissing, and holding hands with Half-Life. Bugs, weird looking aliens, and cloaking power ups. Along with a cool nifty multiplayer! I just hope, the haxors dont get any idea's to mod the game into a new game. Coded Strike.
Loading Times - 100
FAST, fastest PSP game I ever owned!
Overall
Coded Arms, in general is a great game to own, it has replay value (random Levels, and gun upgrade/finding), and a nifty bit of mulitplayer options. But the game does feel like it was made for handheld, nothing for a player to be immersed into.
Good
Graphics are nifty but not special
This game gots guns!

Alright i've been noticing that Coded Arms has been getting alot of crap online and I don't know why, this is a great game. I think it's getting such bad reviews because it's an FPS without a second analog stick and people are still bitchin about that, but other than that this game was great. I had no problem with the controls, they're adjustable so people can fix them to their liking. And yes, the levels are a bit bland but who's realy looking at the background when you walk into a room with 10 enemies and you're low on ammo? This was a great FPS ice breaker for the PSP and from the looks of this game, Coded Arms is going to be a most valuable franchise on the PSP.
69
Rent it if you're desperate. Looks pretty good but that's it. Controls-fps's can work on PSP, but this doesnt do it well. The sound sucks. music is 5 second techno beat loops, enemies sounds suck. Gameplay has randomly generated levels=boring, square, room w/ enemies --> hall --> square room w/ enemies --> etc. Singleplayer is boring after an hour. Multiplayer levels are way too small.
75
Are you a shooter fan? Do you have a PSP? Then you’ve been looking forward to this. Coded Arms follows a hacker into his dives into a military trainer gone rouge in an attempt to quell the many beings within with 100% raw bullet-grinding deletion. Boasting a high-variety of weapons, armor and upgrades for each Coded Arms breaks in the PSP shooter genre, but will it leave its wonderful mark or a horrendous scar? Let’s find out.
Controls - Stick ‘n buttons - 95
Yes, you read that right. you control this FPS with buttons. I can hear the fanboys faint, but it works. The areas are small enough that you can aim quite freely and the analog stick, for movement, is hyper-responsive. But, you can change any of this around, which makes it even better. The only way these could have been any better is if I had two analog sticks or a mouse and keyboard. With switch-weapon and reload being on the direction pad you have to stop moving to do either, which is a huge no-no. Konami you tried, and we thank you.
Graphics - A Pixelated Pounding - 50
I expected more. The lack of color was pretty bad, seeing only greys and dark colors made playing outside impossible, but who would? Overall the graphics are pixelated, but the gun reload and switching animations are quite beautiful, everything else -- Bleh!
Audio - BOOM! - 85
One word: Nice. The guns sound amazing, the ambience of the grinding of machines drove me insane and urged me to delete them. The grenade explosions rattled my PSP and scared the crap out of me when I didn’t see them. Something you can be proud of Konami, I thank you.
Game play - The Holy Grail - 85
This is it, so how did Coded Arms play? Unfortunately it’s frustrating! The random level setup is an immense bother and all the other things that have to be done before you complete a level, and some of the later enemies are extremely frustrating to even aim at. All-in-all it was a heavy burden, yet I couldn’t stop my little fingers from playing!
Overall
If you need an FPS now, it works, but if you can wait for Socom or Battlefield then wait.
85
This review is a bit late, but mostly because I've been delving into the game itself rather than taking time to write about it. The game itself isn't too bad - great graphics, short load times, nice sounds - but it does fall short in a few areas. The controls, although very easy for me, are probably much more difficult for other people to master.
The first person I showed the game to had never really played a PSP before, and once he got his hands on it, he was at a loss as to how to move around. Once he figured out that CONTROL TYPE C was the reasonable way to go, he calmed down a bit, but it was still very hard for him to get the hang of it. For me, on the other hand, it was very simple. I can adapt to any control type in an instant, for some reason. But control was still very annoying. I give them kudos for at least making a control scheme that even works for a PSP First Person Shooter, so I won't bash it too hard. The controls WORK, but they take a little getting used to.
The graphics are amazing and they definitely showcase the PSP's capabilities. Being both a DS and PSP fan, I must say that this blows all of DS's games out of the water graphics-wise.
Now for the game's greatest feature: random level generation. It isn't COMPLETELY random, as I'm pretty sure that all item drops from enemies are preset (?) but other than that, the landscape is sure to differ. It's fun to explore, but too much exploring can give you a headache. This game does justice to that statement, by keeping the levels short, but in large doses. Infinity sector? Great idea to finish up your weapon upgrades and continue having fun even when the game is completed.
All in all, Coded arms is a great game. You don't want to miss it. Just get used to the controls, and the game will suck you into a simple storyline that appeals to anyone and a whole bunch of difficult challenges that can make even the best player fail. Even if you don't like FPS games, give this game a try. I mean, I rarely ever play FPS games, and I love this game. The hype lived up, in a way.
85
Considering this potential of this game, I was rather surprised to see how Konami created a FPS with RPG elements. The dull level design brings repetition and therefore, boredom. Nice interfacing with startup screens, and the plug-in's are also neet to tweek and perfect. Hope the sequal adds onto the what is a nice 1st generation PSP FPS.
95
I was surprised a FPS shooter was going to come out for the PSP. I read some of the reviews that people wrote and most of them were fairly good. The controls take getting used to, but when you get the controls down the game gets really fun. The controls are fully customizable to suit you. The weapons and graphics are sweet. The only downfall to this game is the story line. Overall this game is one of the best for the PSP.
25
I think this game was a good idea, but overall don't think it is that great. I have not, however, played the multiplayer mode and would like to give it a shot. I think that actually might be fun. But the game play overall isn't that great.
89
Despite all the bad criticism this game has recieved I still think that it's top. It has really cool graphics and awesome gameplay for a FPS on PSP. Although I must admit it was kinda hard at first to get used to the controls but after some time it was all cool.
90
Lots of weapons! Levels are dull but good for multiplayer, and the controls are funky at first. Still a great game though. I say buy it even if no one else owns it.
88
I I love the game, but it was hard to start playing it at first due to the non-dual analog sticks. I still don't really have the hang of it, it would probably be alot more fun if the controls were better.
50
I just couldn't get into it. I rented it for a day and got bored with it quickly. Although FPS are not my favorite type of game, I really felt like this was such a shallow experience. I think if there were more RPG aspects to it, or if it was more like that old Genesis game Shadowrun (remember that game? man, months and months of playing!). Unfortunately there was just very little to enjoy for me here.
90
The first first-person-shooter (FPS) for PSP is the standard for any other game to try and take its place. It’s like the Halo for handhelds.
It is a game that will take time to get accustomed to, with only one analog stick, you will find it difficult to move your character around with the X, O, /, and Square buttons replacing what would normally be the right analog stick. Try experimenting with the sensitivity and it’s like moving your character around with two D-pads (I don’t like analog sticks much so I use the D-pad most of the time). The L button jumps, it will take a while to get used to not hitting ‘X’. These problems aren’t really the deciding factor in the game’s playability and once you get accustomed to the controls (It’s for a handheld FPS) this will become one of your favorite shooters.
Probably the best graphics I’ve seen on the PSP thus far (I own four games because I’m poor.) The explosions are good, the weapons are realistic and the enemies can be taken seriously. Not much else to say except this game uses the PSP’s hardware to the best of its ability and is a fantastic looking FPS.
After playing NFL Street 2 on the PSP, it makes the short loading times even shorter. For anyone else it is still one of the quickest loading games you’ll find for your PSP.
You’ve got the PSP speakers to deal with, you won’t have 5.1 surround sound, but the sound is still good. The guns sound realistic (the realistic guns do, anyway) and even the plasma and light weapons are believable. The screeches of the enemies aren’t unbearable either.
I don’t know anyone at the moment that has this game besides me, so I can’t review the multiplayer. It features the classic Deathmatch, Keep the Mark (King of the Hill) and Last Man Standing (Elimination). I am disappointed that there is no Capture the Flag however.
89
CODED ARMS was hyped by many people to be the best PSP game ever. Did it live up to this hype? Well, in my opinion it did. I really love the game. So lets get down to business.
Playability: 9/10
The game is very fun. Sometimes it can get very tactical. Like when you go to the next level with little health. But most of the time it is pretty much a shoot-em-up game. It is very entertaining when you know someone else with the game. The multiplayer mode is very nice. The replay value on the game is definately there. The random level generater doesn't really do much to this though. But I have found myself playing the game over and over.
Loading Times: 10/10
Well, thats pretty much enough to be said besides the fact that the loading times are very short. This is useful when you are on the go and don't have much time to play.
Graphics: 7/10
The graphics in this game are amazing. The framerate throughout most of the game will be perfect. But there will be times when you definately notice a great drop in the framerate. There will also be times when looking at corners on walls and ceilings make them appear a little choppy. But overall, the graphics are pretty nice!
Sound: 8/10
The sound effects and music in the game are great! The music will start to pump up your blood when you are near an enemy. The sound effects will also do this. But the only problem is that the sound effects can sound a little cheesy at times, which does take away from the overall score for the sound.
Overall Value: 8.9/10
The game is very entertaining, and I extremely suggest getting it, not renting first. If you rent it first, you will find yourself addicted and wanting to buy the game as soon as possible. Then that would have been around 5 USD down the drain.

First of all, I am not far into the game but I was very concerned after some reviews I've seen. For all old school FPS players, I think you'll like control scheme "C" which is turn left/right look up down on analog and a "WADS" style movement on buttons. If you don't know what "WADS" is, you might not appreciate the control scheme. However, controls are HIGHLY customizable.
WARNING: As far as I can tell, if you are looking for a deep story, detailed plot, compelling dialog; run for your life. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a straight forward killer. Look no further. Control is pretty tight. Graphics are gorgeous. Again, I am giving a couple of hours worth of impressions. However, nobody every slammed UT 04, quake, or Doom for lack of story. It's about the fun people.
I would give this an uninflated 8/10. In other words way above average, lots of fun. Is it perfect? No. However my experience is that it is a good shoot-em-up.

One thing is certain: future FPS shooters on PSP should be done this way, both in the graphical and control department. These two aspects were the biggest questions before release. How can you control an FPS with one analog stick? But it really works - just take some time and get used to it. I'm talking about standard button configuration here, but you can tweak it in any way you want.
Graphical quality is almost the same league as WipEout Pure - crisp, detailed surrounding, many destructible objects, not many colors, but darkness is the mood of the game. In terms of gameplay, well, it's an FPS, you go and shoot at enemies. You have some smaller ang bigger guns at your disposal, with upgrade options. Auto-aiming helps a lot, but the coolest idea (and perfectly done) is the setting of the game. You fight inside the computer, with bots and hacking programs. Everything you find, acquire or destroy are bits, files, and parts of the code. And you can see it everywhere, from "decoding files" when finding ammo, through "jacking" into different levels, to everything falling in simple "bits" when crashed or shot. That's the novelty you should expect from minds like Konami, not simple PS2-games sequels everybody is throwing at us.
The only flaw of the CA is that gameplay gets repetitive after few levels - but it's a common flaw of shooters in closed, corridor-based environments. Also, the action music is a little strange, but the ambient sounds when walking around are OK and loading times are lightning-fast (you listening, Rockstar?!). Overall - good job Konami !

This is a very good game, the best FPS on the PSP so far! The only thing that lets this game down is the lack of a second analog pad. This would help as there is stuff coming at you from everywhere and before you can get your crosshairs on them, they've ripped your head off!
But that's not really the game's fault its Sony's.

Very Repetitive. However, it lasts long. I find that you will get stuck in parts. Sometimes a strategy needs to be found. It's not a bad game, however it's also not excellent.

I've always been a fan of FPS games. As far as PSP's capabilities go, Coded Arms ranks up there. So with that being said, whether to get the game or not, one might be to compelled to just rent the game (as for me, this one is worth keeping). Sure the game generates each level randomly (so don't even think about getting a strategy guide for this game) but the gameplay is repetitive.
If you're the type of gamer who likes to "build up their character/level up," then you might not mind the redundant element of this game. I've yet to test the multiplayer feature of this game. The only thing I can't stand about this game are those annoying self-detonating "roombas."

This game is pretty damn addicting. Especially with the multiplayer.

This game is not Halo of anything, but it is still impressive. Great graphics and alot of fun. The Controls take some getting used to but once you have, look out. The game is also pretty linear, but still impressive for a first PSP attempt.

I was a bit worried when I began to see some of the reviews on the net (and in mags) for Coded Arms. I'm glad I ignored them this time and decided to pick up this game. After all, I've been waiting ever since they anounced that a FPS was going to come out for the PSP.
I was very impressed with the presentation. It gives you the feeling that you're in this computer world infected by viruses.
The graphics are the star of this game. The particle and smoke effects look great and even the reloading animations are done well. Some complained about the "boxy levels" but I thought they look pretty cool and there some nice added touches like steam and even some interactive environments you can shoot.
The sound is pretty good but it sounds a lot better if you're using head phones.
As for the controls, they take some getting used to. It's nice that you have different options to choose from. I like both the "A" and "D" control settings.
Most of the reviews I've read gave this game a low score mainly because there's not much of a story and they compare it a lot to the original DOOM (where you just run around and shoot things). Well, that's just the type of game I've been looking for. I want a cool looking portable game that's easy to pick up and play and do some mindless shooting and Coded Arms delivers.

I think this game is pretty solid. Nice graphics, great sound and fun gameplay. What the heck else do you want?
No, it's not Half-Life 2 or Halo 2. Did you really think the PSP could do something like that?
It's more like Half-Life 1/2 or something. I think the story is alright too. People are all hyped up about the story being lame because they don't get to see any blood splatter. Well, Konami breeds a few less future serial killers out here, so what?
It's fun, entertaining and beautiful. Enjoy kids!

FPS being a relatively new genre to the handheld arena there has thus far been little to excite fans, with the slight exception of Doom on gameboy advance. This game represents not only the first attempt at FPS by Konami, a genre largely left alone by Japanese developers, but also the first FPS on the PSP; a fact that is boldly stated on a sticker attached to the japanese version of the game.
Firstly the Japanese version boots up in English mode, so the language barrier usually encountered when importing is non-exsistent. The game also has a selectable Japanese mode.
As an avid PC FPS player, I was very wary that console FPSs have a tendency to be the malnutritioned cousin of their PC counterparts coupled with the PSPs control layout with only one analogue stick. After trying all the 4 selectable control schemes, that can be extensively reconfgured, I settled on type A. Speaking of which the controls do take some getting used to but after a couple of hours I found that they did not hinder the gameplay enough to ruin the fun. It would be nice to have had the option to speed up the rate of turning, but its rarely annoying as the game is designed with the controls in mind.
The story sets up a shooter that takes place within a battle simulation program and through the menu makes it known that you are "hacking" said simulator for monetary gain. The levels are split into six sections and so far I have encountered 3 environments: City, Base and Ruins, each theme differs considerably in aesthetics but all maintain a dark indoor atmosphere. The levels, while quite detailed still have a slightly boxy layout, the wireframe of which is shown in the top-right corner and has various landmarks visible allowing for easy navigation. On average, each sublevel takes 2-3 minutes to complete and sometimes a time limit is applied which gives the game a welcome change of pace. The enemies in each zone vary as yhou come up against soldiers, robots and bugs, often 5 or so at the same time. This is when the game is at its best, any hassles with the controls are quickly forgotten and adrenaline kicks in, and you try to shoot down a flying robot while several robots on the ground scurry towards you at once.
Luckily the arsenal you are supplied with comes in a novel manner. Unable to leave levelling up of Japanese RPGs behind them, once you have a weapon you can upgrade it with the pickups left by fallen foes. After only a few levels you find yourself with an assualt rifle, standard pistol, sniper rifle and two types of grenades. But soon you will find weapons suited to paticluar enemies such as a bolt pistol that is more effective against robots. The sniper rifle, with its one hit kills on the majority of early enemies, is a little over powered and can be used to avoid a firefight at times.
Graphics are rather good with bloom and many electric effects constantly reminding you of your virtual environment. The animations of both the weaponry and enemies are rather smooth and there is cool dispersal type effect when your stray bullets hit the wall. furthermore, many objects are destructable and some yield ammunition. The graphics are not too crowded for the small screen and enemies are well distinguishable from the environment. The AI, while not groundbreaking is generally ok, with only a few times enemies becoming stuck.
The techno of tomorrow is apparently very similar to the techno of today if this game is any indication. Having said that it is yet to become irritating and ramps up when there are enemies nearby. The sound is decent with the shotgun having the desired effect even on this tiny machine and the assualt rifle satisfying also.
A quick multiplayer game revealed that the simpler maps are still fun and you can choose the arsenal you have earned in the singleplayer with your leveled up weapons to take in with you. I am eager to try the supposed weapon beating feature in multiplayer so I can steal weapons away from a certain Frenchman form down the hall...
All in all, this game is a solid but not outstanding FPS, considering as it is the first FPS on PSP it has has turned out well despite some flaws such as the overpowered sniper rifle and some minor control issues. You will often find yourself in the midst of a firefight completely unaware of control issues after a couple of hours and the game supplies tense moments frequently, the sign of a fun FPS. The level designs lend themselves well to quick bursts and are also apprpriate for moderate(1-2 hour) sessions. A welcome alternative to the myriad of racing and puzzle games already available.

Main problems of this game are the slowdowns, not the controls. Once you get past the novice levels (sector1) you will experience instances where you get around 10 or less fps. I don't think that the PSP is unable handle it, probably lack of optimization. Guess they simply rushed things to get this title out.
