After buying Megaman Powered Up I was sure that I wouldn't enjoy Megaman Maverick Hunter X as much since side by side MMPU has at least 5 times the extras that Maverick Hunter does. However I was delightfully surprised by what I got in this package (worth the $19.99 I paid for it).

This game is a faithful recreation of MMX. So faithful that it blows the original out of the water. And I'm not talking about the graphics either which are amazing btw. The new 3D engine makes the game feel even more alive than before. Seeing cars moving in the distance or the muddy swamps taking over research facilities is so cool. Plus the animation is terrific. There is some slowdown but not enough for you to stop playing or even get really annoyed by as it only happens with the screen is full of foes and gunfire. Load times are breif as well, on par with the PS1 MMX games.

Gameplay wise, it's MMX how you remember it except with a save function. Other than that it's the same game. There are changes in where armor is located and other minor changes in level design but tis the same game. Not a bad thing as MMX was a very solid action/platformer. If you've played and beaten MMX before then you'll have ease beating this rendition of the game as it feels easier this time around.

Now, with the new Vile mode the whole game feels different except for the platforming. Vile has three weapons available to him. His arm weapon, shoulder cannon, and leg weapon. Basically focusing on speed, range, and sheer brute force. Until you get his extra abilties, Vile's mode can be difficult. Knowing what weapons to use when on minor enemies is key to winning. There are 45 different weapons that Vile can choose from. Some seem very similar to others but for the most part they all have their unique properties like a fire that engulfs Vile or missiles that hover before flying forward or a split fire laser cannon. His story also has it's own cutscenes and gives a unique perspective to the plot.

Speaking of plot, thanks to the 20 min anime that you unlock after beating the game with X (same way you unlock Vile) you'll get to see what caused the events that occured in the game. Very cool to see X and Zero fight and figure out what's going on with the ever increasing Maverick threat. There are also some anime clips in both Vile and X's game to show what is happening as well instead of just in-game cutscenes.

Sadly, that's it for the game. There is the Hard mode but it honestly doesn't feel that much harder except that bosses learn new moves (just like in MMPU). However, the amount of fun that is had going through the game with either character is a testament to a well done game design. I don't even think MMPU is as fun as MM:MHX.

Pros
• Graphics are simply gorgeous with the right amount of animation and background details to make the world seem alive.
• Gameplay for both X and Vile are incredibly solid and the two offer very distinct ways, even more so than Zero did in X4-X6, to play in the Megaman X universe.
• Short anime movie extra is very cool to watch and goes great lengths to expand the story than with the original MMX.
• Load times are brief and don't bog down the action.

Cons
• Only one con. Once you clear the game with both X and Vile and watch the anime that's it. Unlike MMPU where you can play the game as the boss characters and create and download levels (as well as play in the frustratingly hard Challenge mode) MM:MHX is over once it's over. Perhaps Zero as a playable character and some challenges like MMPU could have extended the game's life a bit.

So go pick this game up if it's $19.99. There's not enough extras to warrant a purchase if it's more than that. At $19.99 it's a 'get what you pay for' game and a very very good one at that.

I was so eager to buy this game when I first heard about it. I've always liked the premise behind Mega Man. From the original tv show to this new remake, I've always loved the lil blue bomber.

Playability - 85
A very simple gameplay setup that easily works. Although, I must say, the game is surprisingly difficult. The levels are pretty easy, but the boss fights do take a while to finally master. I was disappointed to see that you couldn't fight with the bosses after you have beat them. But it was only a minor loss. [85]

Load Times - 95
About 5 second load times going to levels and going back. And about a 1 second load time between rooms. So no loss there. [95]

Graphics - 95
Definitely the highlight of the game. I remember playing the original game on my cousin's SNES ages ago, but once I laid my eyes on this remake, the graphics took me by surprise. Everything has been reworked into a 3D side scroller, and I must say, it looks fantastic. [95]

Sound - 80
The sound is basically the same as the original. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The music fits, the sound effects are the same so basically no improvement there. [80]

Overall Value - 90
Since after you beat X mode on the game, you unlock a new Vile Mode and an animated 30 minute 'movie' called the Day of Sigma. The Vile mode is basically the same as X mode, but what I liked was the customization in Vile's weapons, instead of scrolling through. The 30 minute movie basically retells what happens before you start the game. So overall, for about $30, it is worth the price. [90]

I'm completely willing to forgive Capcom for messing up their own story by leading the player into thinking that X was created as a Maverick Hunter in the opening sequences. I'm 100% willing to let that go.

Gameplay - 85
I've known Mega Man games to be challenging. But being a fan of all things Capcom, I'm used to it (or at least I should be). The game has everything you've come to expect from the Mega Man series except for the running dash. If it's there, I must not be doing something right. I'm not particularly wowed by the level design, as the opening levels are flat, and you spend most of your time jumping over ledges. But it's Mega Man. The game makes up for it.

Graphics - 98
I was pleasantly surprised. When looking at screenshots, I was disgusted by the 3D sprites as opposed to original 2D. If you did your homework, and knew a bit of history, 3D Mega Man games have failed everytime (yet somehow Mega Man Legends remains on the shelf at Blockbuster). The minute I started playing Maverick Hunter X, I couldn't stop. The graphics are just beautiful, from the enviroments to the explosions. This game works perfectly on the PSP and is a great remake.

Sound - 100
The sound is flawless. It's no Dolby Digital, but everything is crisp, even the main menu puts you back in the SNES days with nostalgic arcade compositions. I love it.

Overall
If you're like me, and had a heart attack the minute you heard Capcom was releasing a Mega Man game (and eventually Metal Slug) then you'd be a fool to not pick this game up. I was wowed. Shocked. Mystified. Trifecta. It's an excellent game, nothing for the wimpy boys who don't like a bit of arcade challenge to on their PSP's, but still worth at least renting if futuristic platformers aren't your thing (why aren't they? WHY?). Get Mega Man.

We all loved the Super Nintendo, and we all had some sort of platformer. For most it was Mario, for some others it was Donkey Kong, for the rest it was Mega Man. And when it came out back in the day, the graphics were really good if not the best. Since then we have kept our love of old 2D platformers, and few ever stray into the world of 3D without losing their charm, or just being runined altogether. Though there are some that have made a good game in 3D, that wasnt exactly what happened to Mega Man X.

Instead of going into pure 3D, every level is rendered 2D, with a full 3D world all thrown together, the end result? A perfect game that preserved all that was great about the original, and still meets modern day specs. In short, this is a great game, just like it was when it first came out, all they did was push through the 2D wall and carve some beautiful art for us to view/play on our portables. It's so perfect it even recreates those small "slowdown" points that the original had, and we are instantly reminded of the old days when it couldn't get any better than 256 colors!

The only game that this brings memories of is Einhander, a simple visceral shooter w/ great power ups and a natural pick-up play mechanic to it. This game has the wall climbing mechanics of Strider, the jump, armor and weapon power ups of previous Mega Mans and as the 3rd Mega Man release for the portable PSP is quite simply classic. Ability to choose stage like in 1st Mega Man+great FMV's make this more than just a trip down memory lane. Geared towards a slightly older audience than the previous 2 Mega Man games this one impresses w/ its action packed pace.

Smooth intuitive controls coupled w/ solid graphics and a simple "old school' feel make this one a winner on many accounts.

Gameplay - 87: Will have you coming back for more after finishing it.
Music - 91: Wow, it's still that catchy years later.
Graphics - 78: Reminds me of Einhander for PSX w/ great 2D/3D mix
Sound - 74: Good but slightly dated but music is excellent.
Fun Factor - 89: Always good to have in your pocket.
Control - 92: Feels perfect the moment you pick it up
Depth/Value - 78: Slightly low since it is a 1 player game for most part
Overall (not an average) - 87: A great series finally gets a PSP title worthy of the Mega Man franchise name.

Mega Man was a revolutionary series that started off with the original Mega Man series, and branching off into other series such as Mega Man Exe, and of course, the more adult themed and faster paced Mega Man X. This remake brings back all the great bits of the original along with upgrades in detail, and adds a ton of extras just to make it all more worth your time.

Now, don't take this game as just another port of an old side scroller. Mega Man X Maverick Hunter retains nearly everything from the original Mega Man X game, but this time around adds 3-D to the graphics (the backgrounds particularly being incredibly detailed). Not only this, the characters are all given voice acting and script, adding some more life to the game as a whole. Not only this, if you're a big Mega Man fan, the storyline has been given much more detail, with Vile and Sigma given details on how they became Mavericks, and what their intentions are.

The gameplay is still in tact, and the control scheme along with it. The port of the controls is done perfectly, and even for the secret character Vile the controls are done nicely. Load times are hardly noticeable, and you'll be blasting your way through levels in a amtter of seconds. The voice acting is definitely a nice touch to the game, although it is that B voice acting that you often find in Capcom games. This, however, hardly affects the outcome of your performance, although sound would be the weakpoint of this game. Some players complain that this game is too short, yet I disagree. The extras make this game a much more lasting and replayable game than the original, and gamers will come to respect this.

The extras include a demo of the upcoming Mega Man Power Up game, a 20 min movie on how Sigma became the Maverick he is, and Vile as a secret player, something all players of this game will come to enjoy.

Whether you know the series or not, Mega Man X Maverick Hunter is definitely worth the money, and it's certainly one of the best looking PSP games out there even IF its a side scroller. Trust me, you'll love it.

I am not really a Mega Man fan, but I played the previous titles, including the first three and the X series. To me, when I started playing this remake of Mega Man X, I just felt that old fashioned 2D side-scrolling feeling coming back to me again.

Graphics - 85
The graphics are now updated to PSP standards. It's also nice that the backgrounds have become reworked with more detail and are absolutely stunning. The lighting effects are totally awesome, especially when blowing stuff up with your X buster! The only problem is that X's face (the protagonist) lacks detail. The animation cut scenes are a nice addition and help you understand what is going on in the story, but the voice acting and script writing is not up to par. For instance, your first encounter with X's rival, Vile, argues, "I'm just here to cause trouble for you! I hate you!" That is very subpar.

Gameplay - 82
It plays exactly like the original version. This is a good thing or a bad thing for some people. I haven't gotten through the end yet, but the levels seem kind of short. Getting armor and parts for X is pretty awesome! But every upgrade location is relocated, so it's not going to be the same location you found it in the SNES version.

Sound - 72
The sound effects are excellent, very similar to the SNES but enhanced. The remixes of the soundtracks were really nothing special though. I guess I expected too much. I enjoyed the original score much better.

Load Times - 90
That's the great part of this game. The loads only take about a second. And that's only in the beginning, so you don't have to worry about it throughout the game.

Replay Value - 80
There are normal and hard modes (probably once beaten, there will be an expert mode?). Once you complete the game, you get to play as Vile, which is one of the reasons I got Maverick Hunter. With a different arsenal of weapons at your disposal, this will give you other means to play.

I did not want to mention the storyline, since it's not much of a story to begin with. What's cool about Maverick Hunter is that it also comes with a demo of Mega Man Powered Up (a remake of the first Mega Man but in 3D and has baby-ish characters).

Overall - 82
Overall Maverick Hunter is a great game if you're a fan of Mega Man of course, or even 2D side scroll shooters. For me, the game was alright and I will be keeping it since it is the only side-scroll shooter game I own so far. And for just $30, its a price that can't be beat.

NOTE: This a review of the Japense version Megaman Irregular Hunter

Megaman Maverick Hunter X is a remake of Megaman X a 1993 SNES
game. This is old school platforming at it's best. New revamped graphics, hard mode, and a whole new Vile mode.

The new graphics are fantastic, they show the power of the PSP. The most noticeable graphics upgrade is the backgrounds, they look as if you were in a living breathing world. The controls are familier to anyone who has play MMX 4,5,6,7,8.

Vile mode is the new Zero mode. Vile plays completly different then X. He has at least 30 weapons and instead of having a weapon meter he has another energy meter that refuels automatically.

All in all this is a great game, you will be popping this in for the next 5 months I promise. Highly recommended.
