I was a Huge fan of Lemmings when it first appeared on the Amiga. So was glad to get my hands on this game for the PSP. Initial impressions are very favourable.
For those of you who are strangers to Lemmings, the idea is to get as many lemmings as possible from the start 'hatch' to the exit gate. The lemmings will just plod on relentless into various hazards that exist without your interaction, eg Water, Long falls, and many different traps. You can assign different abilities, such as, Climber, Floater, Bomber, Blocker, Builder, Basher, Digger and Miner. The early levels give you a nice introduction to using the abilities, but you'll soon be scratching your head at which abilities to use.
The game is very well presented, and graphics are great, very clear and highly detailed. The one thing I am disappointed with though is that I was a big fan of the original Amiga tunes, and somewhat expected they would also get a remix, just like the graphics. But what is this I hear? Different tunes, and, in my mind, not as catchy! Maybe they are a hidden extra.
The Shoulder buttons control the ability selection at the bottom of the screen. X selects item/assigns a Lemming, Triangle zooms in/out, Circle speeds up game (and timer!), Square locks cursor on a single Lemming, D-Pad moves the cursor and the Analogue Nub pans the camera.
Team 17 have created special new levels for you to tackle, and also included all the original Amiga levels, albeit with a brand new graphical makeover. This is a great game and well suited for the PSP, loadtimes are short, and it automatically saves your progress to the memory card, rather than having to write down a password as on previous versions.
Overall a great addition to the PSP's Puzzle repertoire. Fans of the original will not be disappointed, unless you miss the originals tunes! And I’m sure newcomers will love its cute charm, and perplexing puzzles.
