When I first got Wipeout: Pure, I will admit that I tried to exchange it but they only offered me 2.50! Now I look back on that attempt with shame. In the beginning I had complaints about the gameplay, thinking that it was slow and difficult to maneauver the ships. Well after reading some reviews here on PSP411, I decided to give it another go. After some practice the ships handling got easier and I figured out that when you are not riding the walls, Wipeout is a really fast game.

Advice: When you start playing this game, do it on easy mode, and use only ships with 4/5 or 5/5 handling. You can get used to the controls and the speed slowly. After getting a handle on the controls, you can up the speed to medium, and wow is it fast!

Production (graphics/sound): Both are well done. I really enjoy the scenery and the futuristic cars. The graphics are easy on the eyes and brilliant. Explostions/shrapnal look superb as well. Techno bumps as you race, it is a bit repetitive, but it embraces the future theme. I really wish you could use your PSP playlist to create the soundtrack.

Online: Only Ad-hoc is available for Wipeout: pure. It is a lot of fun though. Basically all the options are open for ad-hoc play (tournament or single race). Also I was impressed with the gameplay customization options.

THey are coming out with a sequel soon, Wipeout: Pulse, that I will surely pick up after working through all the Pure tracks. This game is a justified classic and deserves at least a half hour of play before judgement.

I have it. I read a review saying one mistake and you lose it. Well I say this ameteur do not listen its brilliant. This is the fastest racing game ever. The only game that use the PSPs full graphic power. I can prove this because its the only platinium best selling game on PSP!!! Buy it!!!!

This is the first time I've actually played a Wipeout Game and i'll tell you, I was definitely impressed. I'll break up the review into 5 sections: Playability, Load Times, Graphics, Sound, and Overall Value.

Playability - 95
The game is easily accessible at the beginning of the game. As the game goes on, and as you unlock more classes, the vehicles speed limits are pushed up as is the enemies' AI. They require more skill, speed, power, and quick instincts. This is what makes the game so fun. Don't worry, the classes are harder as you go on but at a good pace, so it's easy for newbies. Then again, this isn't the kind of game you should play on the go. It requires a lot of focus rather than the occasional pick up and play. This may hurt the value but it's well worth the price. Also, with the extra downloadable content, it definitely helps increase its gameplay.

Load Times - 85
The game's load times are about 10 - 15 seconds. They're tolerable so they don't provide much of an impact.

Graphics - 90
Since this was a launch title, many would expect this to be some what average graphics. But this surprised me. The game's graphics, in my opinion, are definitely some of the best I've seen on the PSP (and I have Monster Hunter!). There is some slowdown as the game does get quite chaotic.

Sound - 90
All the techno songs they offer you to listen to is great. It matches the game perfectly.

Overall Value
Since this game is becoming a 'Greatest Hits' game I have three words for you: BUY THIS GAME! At $20 you'll be getting Superb replay value, outstanding graphics, and downloadable content. Don't miss out on this wonderful futuristic racing game.

95
After reading all the good feedback on this game I went out and got it used for 20 bucks. Well worth it, I cant stop playing it. Fast races with smooth graphics and transitions. Also the weapons are a great twist. Wipeout Pure is alot like the original and will have you hooked.

95
If one were to compile a list of the great sleeper franchises of gaming history, WipeOut would easily be in the top ten. Since the original WipeOut was released in 1995, the franchise has pushed the limits of console framerates and player's resistance to sudden fits of seizure. All without budget-busting in-your-face ad campaigns.

WipeOut Pure is no exception. Gorgeous tracks, a more than appropriate electronic soundtrack, and an elegant control scheme make for a well-balanced and immersive gaming experience. Add in the downloadable content from the developer and you have a game whose replay value is immense.

Graphically WipeOut sets the bar. It is easily a benchmark against which all other games for the PSP should be compared. Bright, colorful background terrain, well-designed and challenging tracks, and simple but unique craft combine to form a feast for the eyes, even at the insane speeds the racer travels.

Layer on top of the eyecandy a music soundtrack that is never out of sync. By this we mean pair any random course with any random music track, and you will have an amazing gameplay experience no matter what. The music enhances the experience, never distracting or intruding on the gameplay.

Of course all the pretty lights and sounds are meaningless if you can't play the game. The intuitive control scheme is easy to pick up and makes sense to just about everyone. The D-pad gives you basic steering and pitch, and the L and are buttons provide additional steering help as airbrakes. Just keep your right thumb on the gas (X) and try not to get killed by your human or AI opponents.

Other reviews have commented on the repetitive nature of WipeOut Pure. This would be a bad thing in say, a level-progressing platformer, but for a racing game it's what keeps the player coming back. Each unlocked track presents a new challenge. Each vehicle responds differently at each level. Each speed class forces you to retune your reflexes. Through "repetitive" gameplay Studio Liverpool actual provides variety in a simple and elegant form. Put simply, you don't play WipeOut to save the Princess, you play to win.

For me this is the best PSP game. Fantastic graphics and gameplay and even music. Great game to play on the go. Especially the zone mode.
This is one of the must have PSP titles.

85
Wipeout pure is a great game. With better graohics than any other PSP game ive seen, and also downloadable content. But the games really annoying. Because in the career mode you have to do the same 8 tracks over and over again. This really bugs you if you are tring to complete the game. And it is to hard. And also if you have a 32mb memory stick it woont do. Because the downloadable content is to much memory. Like the gamma pack is about 12mb. So you wont have any more memory for music etc.

99
I can't put this game down. It's so good. It's one of those games that just keeps on giving. Once you think you've unlocked everything there are new downloads, tracks, songs, skins, and cars to download. You can play this game over and over with no problems. The load times aren't even noticable and the graphics are top notch. The sound is great with all the music tracks it has and the ones you can download.

92
Wipeout: Pure is a really fun game. I wish more PSP games were released like this one.

Graphics - 90
Wow! Very impressive graphics that show me what the PSP is capable of. The tracks are well designed for their respective difficulty and they just look really good. The cars are awesome, each with their own shape and style. The weapons and overall speed of this game make the graphics top-notch.

Gameplay - 90
There's a lot to do in this one. You can keep on playing and playing and playing and playing to unlock more and more stuff. Not to mention the downloadable content! What's good about Wipeout: Pure is that you can sit down at home and play this for hours or you can bring it on the go and play a couple minute race. There are many game modes.

• Single Race: Single race for first.
• Tournament: A set of races where you accumulates points for placing and try to get the most points at the end.
• Time Trial: Get the fastest time
• Zone: Try to last as long as possible as the speed increases.
• Free Play: Just keep on racing a single track 'til you quit.
• Multi-player: Play against others and friends

One problem I found in this category was that it did get a little repetitive for me. You just keep on racing and racing. Maybe that statement is a little biased because I have never been a huge racing game fan, but I found it to get boring at times. It is tons of fun for the first half hour I'd say. Then I need a bit of a change of scenery. Still really fun, and lots of downloadable content.

Sound - 100
Some cool music, and awesome sound effects. Perfect! No complaints here.

Overall - 92
Only one annoying load time, and that's in the beginning, otherwise it seems alright. Lots of content and playability, including downloadable content. This one could take you a while to beat 100% and it does get a bit repetitive, but with a good mix of games it will never get old. This is a MUST for any PSP owner.

98
Recently a reviewer compared this game to Ridge Racer, and he complained that the graphics were okay along with the gameplay, the controls sucked, and the only reason that people hailed this game is because of the web browser hack. This is ABSOLUTELY incorrect, and any true gamer willing to spend some time with one of the best PSP games to date will find an incredible racing experience right in Wipeout Pure.

The Graphics are excellent, and anyone who tells you otherwise has an eye problem, especially the level designs. Sometimes you get so involved with the designs of the levels that you forget that you're still racing. Thats how great this game looks, and the ship designs are also a great example of this. The remade classic levels from previous Wipeout games are amazing, with all the ships getting redesigned along with the levels.

The soundtrack and sounds keep you really involved in the game, and the sounds of missiles flying from each vehicle are precise as well as really really cool. You can even select or deselect the songs you want to hear during the races.

Wipeout also has downloadable soundtracks in the making for users to download, and a number of skins, tracks, and vehicles for them to download also, all of which are nice touches to gameplay and replayability.

Please, don't compare this game to Ridge Racer. It's also a great game but Wipeout is completely different, and great in its own way also. Any fan of racing games or action games for that matter will have a blast with Wipeout, literally.

I went down to my local store and saw the #1 PSP game for only $30! That was my perspective due to the myriads of reviews deeming Wipeout Pure "the best PSP game ever!!" So as you could guess I was quite stoked and picked up a copy. But I'm here to tell you: This game is fun, but not what it's all worked up to be.

Ridge Racers ruins this game. That's right, I was so used to the controls on ridge racers, that when I came to play wipeout, it was totally different. Different in a bad way, it took me about 2 hours to get used to the controlls and start enjoying the game.

There is nothing that makes this game stand out to me. The graphics were medicore, the music was fair and the gameplay was well, just gameplay, like any other game. The most unique thing about this game is the ability to get new updates via the web browser.

The game is fun, but if I had the choice between Ridge Racer and Wipeout, I'd pick Ridge Racer! Don't be deceived by all the online reviews that make Wipeout look like the deity of all PSP games. These are, in my opinion, due to the web browser hack that nobody cares about any more.

50
It's alright. I bought it and I was a little dissapointed when I first started playing the beginner levels. I found they weren't as fast paced as they should have been. But I was delighted to find that as you progress the ships get considerably faster. However, I don't like that if you make one mistake, you're screwed. If you so much as touch a wall, your speed goes way down. I think I might just return this and buy Lumines.

90
This games is the best game out, buy it.

99
This was the second game I got for the PSP, and the only complaint I have is that it wasn't the first. The graphics are one of the best out there AND it was one of the games that came with the release. This is also one of the few games that really show what the PSP can really do. I did find that after comming out of sleep mode the game froze for a coupple of secs, no big deal. If you own a PSP and dont have this, then get it. If you dont have a PSP get a PSP and WipEoutPure.

85
Graphics are awesome, music is not bad either. Haven't tried updating it yet, can't wait.

90
When I bought the PSP, GTA wasn't available yet at my local store so I decided to pick up Wipeout: Pure coz all the rave-reviews, lovely interfaces and the Designers Republic background kinda influenced me. Got home, opened up the packaging to be greeted by a nicely designed Manual/Inlay, UMD and Inner Cover (first PSP game I've seen this on, but I've got only 2 so far :P) Right there I'd give Wipeout Pure a 10 on Package design!

Next, Popped in the UMD and waited for the game to boot up, and screen after screen (loading, intro cinematic, menu, track/craft selection) I was visually amazed by the designs on the interfaces and how the studio has stayed in line with the whole theme of the game. So far so good.

And then the Race began. 3 minutes later I was disappointed. I had no idea how to properly play this game. I couldn't believe I had spent my cash on this instead of waiting for GTA to arrive. But I read review after review on this game before buying it, whats going on?

So I gave it another try, went to the controls and.. Air brakes? after about 10 minutes of learning to properly air-brake I was rocking the tracks! and so the fun began! So yes I'd say W:P has a kinda steep learning curve. All you budding anti-grav racers, try this: press left-right-left-right or vice versa on a jump.

Graphically, W:P has to be seen in person as screens simply do it no justice nor does movies on line. Its the little effects that make this amazing like the blinding flash of light as your eyes adjust to the light after coming out of a dark tunnel, the little drops of water falling on to the screen from the rain in the Sinucit track, the windmills that seem to be floating in space next to the track in Sebenco Climb. These tracks are gorgeous, my personal favorite being Sol 2. Some of the crafts I thought could have used a bit more work but its still amazing how they are pushing this type of graphics on the handheld.

Sound-wise, W:P has a nice section of techno, from back beats to drum n' bass (I'm not really up to par with the sub-genres of techno) but song-selection definitely kept me in mood with the game. The announcer sounds good (futuristic?) and the announcements are kept short and informative unlike the sometimes-cheesy Ridge Racer Announcer! The ships and weapons sound belivable as well. The whole sound got a nice bit of oomph after I connected it to my Sound System at home and I bet it sounds as good with a good pair of earphones as well.

Gameplay, the crafts on the beginner class, Vector, start at a nice enough speed for the beginners to the Wipeout series to get used to and ramp up gradually with the classes (Venom, Flash, Rapier and Phantom) to the point where its you, your reflexes and the track. If they made this game any faster, I swear my eyes would start to bleed! When it comes to the mechanics its all about precision air-braking, anticipation of turns and using your power ups intelligently. You get a selection of 10 power-ups (Auto-Pilot, Nitro, Shield, Plasma, Missiles, Rockets, Quake, Disruption Bolt, Mines and Bomb) the manual does a nice job of explaining what each one does. Hint: learn the weapon icons! You can either use the weapons with the Square button of press Circle to add it to your shields (coz once the shields go down its Game-Over, baby!) this adds a nice strategic element to the game.

The game modes presented are Single-Race, Tournament, Time trial and Zone. Zone mode is where its just you and the absolutely-minimal-but-simply-gorgeous-track (W:P level designers are TALENTED!) This is an endurance race of sorts where each lap is divided into a number of zones and every 5 zones the top-speed of your ship is increased. Heres the catch, there are no power ups meaning no way to boost up your shields. So basically, its “how many zones can you endure before you blow up your ship?”. Zone is ADDICTING. Getting Gold medals on all four zone tracks will unlock the ship for the other race-modes (trust me, its not easy!)

Another thing I have to touch on is the download packs available through Sony for FREE! There are about four packs which add about 12 more stellar tracks to the already great lineup and some skins to the ships. Be sure to check out the Omega pack if you have an European version of the game.

Where Overall Value is concerned, I think this game nails it coz the tourneys are not easy enough to tackle all at once as the later classes will require some training before you attempt, getting gold in single player races will unlock more tracks for you to race on and Zone mode will keep you coming back for more! And with the download packs available and more in the works I give Studio Liverpool a well deserved pat on the back on a game-well-done!

This is a DEFINITE Must-Buy for PSP Owners!

97
With most of the courses being exactly the same, this game can get rather boring after a while. If you want to get the upgrade pack, it takes up half of your memory stick. The internet browser was good until replaced by Sony's. Other than that, at first, this game can seem like it is the funest in the world for a little while. Get this game for short term trills.

94
So this is what the UK had waited so long for! With every console launch game lineup, there needs to be at least one title that you should be forcing in your friends faces to say "Just look at this!". Wipeout Pure, was just one of those titles in the UK.

It is everything you'd want from a handheld racing title. Incredibly detailed racing arenas, the most gorgeous ambient theme music...and it's fast as hell too!

When you throw the game on, the races are scarily slow. Quite the let down you might think at first. But believe me, you're going to need this learning curve! The first few races are easy enough to get to grips with, but in later divisions, it almost leaves you feeling one more speed boost and the cameras will never be able to keep up with you.

As with all Wipeout titles, it's still frustratingly slow to accelerate once you've hit a wall, or been shot by an opponent. But then, it wouldn't be much of a challenge if you just hit your previous break neck speeds within seconds of being knocked back a peg or two!

Power ups and speed boosts are delightfully places on tracks to leave you with quite a difficult split second decision on a lot of tracks. Either get the power up, and hope you can (no pun intended) wipeout the group of racers in front, or whether to use your skills and try and speed ahead. Within a good few plays though, you'll know which suits your skills the most.

Also, the game is quite hefty in size too! Not only with the decent array of tracks and vehicles that come on the UMD, there's an increasing number of free content on the Wipeout Pure website. Now for free, you'd be forgiving for thinking these would be just thrown together in seconds, and utterly uninspiring to the eye. NEVER the case. If anything, the updated tracks probably better those you start with!

In my opinion, this is the very best game you'll find out on PSP at the moment. The most stunning tech demo you could hope to show any of your friends. And at the forefront of multiplayer wifi gaming and content downloads, it's an absolute must have.

97
My first wipeout title was on 64. I played it with some friends and didn't have a clue what was going on, but it was fast and pretty. Years later I picked up Wipeout 3 (Wip3out to some) and was blown away but the speed, graphics, and hellsih difficulty. Now I was incredibly happy with the game not knowing that wipeout normally isn't that hard. That should tell you something right there. I decided to pick up Wipeout XL and to my surprise it was easier. It was also uglier (it was made before Wipeout 3). I'll get Wipeout Fusion one day.

Point is, I became a wipeout fan. The main reason I bought a PSP, regardless of how many games and umd movies/albums would come out for it, was for Wipeout Pure.

Graphics - 95

First thing you'll notice right away are the graphics. And I'm not even talking about the in game graphics. I'm just talking about the user interface! This interface has more in common with Wipeout 3 than it does XL. Wipeout 3 had this minimilst look to the user interface. It looked really cool but the text was so tiny it was a pain to use. Well this time the text is large and bold and easy to read. The colors are very sharp and look amazing.

Now for the actual game. This is super slick. Very bright and vibrant. Even night tracks are bright. Things are constantly glowing and beeping. Giant billboards are flashing stuff around every corner. Something is always pulsating and moving. The ships almost look as amazing as the tracks. They look a bit blocky but very slick and smooth neither the less. The special effects really show off the graphics. Explosions from bombs are huge, flames from the quake light up the whole screen, missiles bounce around like spinning tops in a maze, and so on and so forth. This game is beautiful.

There is some slow down sometime and the frame rate drops but it's so quick and sometimes you may even need the game to slow down so you can catch your breath.

Gameplay - 90

Wipeout is a futuristic hovercraft racer. You have your acceleration button, your left and right air brake buttons (there is a special control scheme for air braking also), your weapon attack and asorb (to refill your shields as pit lanes were removed for the better from this title) buttons and a button to look behind. You can use either the analog or the d-pad for steering.

You hover at very high speeds around tracks that have huge leaps, super tight hair pin turns, banking corners, narrow tracks, straights with no boundaries (so you can fall off), a mid-air barrel roll that vies you a turbo boost upon landing (an exciting new move to the series I do believe) and other crazy stuff that no car could ever do.

To help win races you'll have to use weapons. There is a well balanced variety of weapons, like striaight firing rockets, an earth quake that travels the whole legnth of the track, energy bolts that take control of an opponent's ship for a variety of flippy effects. Anything to slow down an oppenent and slowly destroy their shields.

Doing all of this takes some time to learn. Being a vetern player I had no trouble getting into the swing of things. For a new comer it'll take a few races to get a hold of the controls and the physics of the game. The game is a lot more forgiving than Wipeout 3 that's for sure.

There are four main single player modes. And each mode is divided into five different speed classes.

• Single race: Just race for 1st place.
• Tournment: 4 and sometimes 8 and 12 races where the winner is deterimined by the points recieved from each win. Each rank gives you a different ammount of points. Get 1st place ranking and recieve 8 points, 2nd place, 6 points, and so on.
• Zone: Steer a craft around four unique tracks where the goal is to just survive. Sound easy? It's not when the spped is constantly increasing, beyond even the fastest race class.
• Time Trial: Race by yourself and weapon free (you get one turbo per lap) to get the best possible time.

There is also a free play mode but that's just for practicing (no opponents and no clock to beat) until you feel like quitting. There's also a multiplayer mode (upt to 8 players) for single and tournament races. You can also trade high scores. The first loading screen takes a very long time. After that it's not that bad. Nothing that really takes you out of the game and sometimes the break is needed!

My biggest complaint is the enemy AI. I not quite sure whie the developers chose to make it so that during the first lap your enemies are unnaturally faster than you. It does up the challenge but in an artificial way.

Sound - 100

Sound effects are wonderfully done. Everything seems to fit just right. Zippy engines and explosions sound just how you'd think they sound. There's even enviromental noise going on. Really sucks you into the atmosphere of the game.

The music in the game is excellent as always. It's electronic dance music from artists like Aphex Twin, Freq Nasty, Photek, and more (19 songs in all). The soundtrack is on par with other titles in the series. There is one thing that this soundtrack has over any other though and I'll get to that into the REPLAY section.

Replay value - 100

Even if there wasn't any downloadable content this would still be rated high. But there is. Since the original launch there has been twice the number of tracks released, new ships, and classic music from Cold Storage (made music for all the games in the series) released. This is one game that keeps on giving well after the intial purchase. And this is on top of the unlockable content that came originally like secrect crafts, art (every individual gold medal you earn is a piece of art that you can look at in the progress menu), and new skins for the crafts. This game is bursting at the seams with content. I've never played any game that wasn't on PC that had this much to offer after the intial purchase. And did I mention that this was all FREE?!

Overall - 95

This will always be one of the best games for the PSP. If you like racing titles then you'll at least like it, if not love it. And if you are a wipeout fan or just a futuristic hovercraft racing fan then you WILL love it no matter what. An amazing launch title that will last well beyond it's initial release. Thank you Studio Liverpool.

80
This game has got very nice graphics, seems like a normal car racing track just with hovercraft spaceships. when I first played this game, it reminded me of star wars racer on pc

97
This game was one of the first games I bought and I got hooked onto it. This was so addictive I've finnished the whole game before the downloads was availiable. If you like racing with weapons and catchy music this is a must have.

90
Great fun. Futuristic racing with nifty ships rather than lame prototype cars.

Each ship has ratings for handling, speed, shields and thrust. Each track requires a different approach, so you might want to choose ships differently depending on the characteristics of the track. Some are all winding curves and require more manoueverability, some are just wide flat speed tests. There are several speed levels, Vector, Venom, Flash, Rapier & Phantom. It gets progressively more difficult, the faster you go.

There are head to head races, tournaments, time trials, a wild zone section and free play for practice. Getting gold medals unlocks different tracks. Each track takes about 3 minutes to run so it's ideal for short attention spans or quick pick up play. Not that you won't be there for an hour without realising it anyway, but in case you're moredisciplined, you can play in short bursts.

There's also downloadable content. More tracks, extra ships, music and skins for the game. These can be downloaded to your computer and added onto the memory stick or obtained wirelessly if you have access to an internet node.

Absolutely worth the money spent. And that's aside from the little crack that allows you to browse the web from the download page.

96
Couldn't recommend this game anymore - only down side is some of the initial load time is a bit frustrating

97
This game is fun. It is fast paced, has good controls and has loads of downloadable content too! It has great infrastructure -- no lag. It was a great buy.

90
I bought this game today and have spent abour 2-3 hours with it. Even though I played Wipeout XL a few years ago, I really had to get re-used to the controls which are a little "late", but that's not really a bug but the effect of flying at 600kmh. Bumping around the track during the first hour made me really consider if I shouldnt return this game, but once I got a hang of the controls and reached a higher ship class; it's amazing! All you gotta do is give it some time to learn the controls and stop bouncing off the walls / falling down. All I miss is infrastructure mode. =(

95
When I got this on July, I was excited. It was praised on all of the review sites. So I tried it. It plays real smooth and you can pick it up and just play. The ship you're in can blow up along with any other ship if it takes too much damage. You can even download ships, tracks, and music if you want to.

Load Times: About 20 seconds tops.
Graphics: As good as a PS2 game.
Sound: Very futuristic and cool.
Overall Value: With downloadable stuff, this is a very good game.

95
This game is a joy for the senses! This will satisfy anyone of all ages and is extremely fun. The graphics are the best I've seen for the Godly and Almighty PSP to date. Game play is fast and enjoyable and load times aren't thst long. I haven't found any problems for this game except that the downloads for the game that includes maps, skins, and vehicles can take up space on your memory stick. But either way this is a must buy for anyone.

98
This is the game that keeps on giving. It takes me back to the first Wipeout on my PS. I see this as the best game for you money. You pay a one time fee to get the game and then you can just download updates all day long. For most games like need for speed everytime they decide to add a new car you have to go buy a new game inorder to use it.

In Wipeout Pure all you have to do is download all the new material it's like having a couple of Wipeout games in one. If you want to get a big bang for you buck this is a must buy. Playability is endless, load times are ignoreable, graphics are very true to itself, sound is awesome. Overall you will be hurting yourself by not getting this game.

94
Wipeout Pure is definitely worth 40 bucks. It is an easy-to-play racing game. People of all skill levels will enjoy it: rookies can easily pick it up and have fun, and hardcore gamers will enjoy achieving high scores and racing their friends wirelessly.

This game also features wireless downloads that allow you to upgrade your game with new tracks, new vehicles, and new interface skins. There are many game modes to ensure you'll never get bored. Overall, it's an awesome game and I recommend it to everyone.

83
Great game. To make it even better there is downloadable content to keep the game fresh. Although it is expected that each new item downloaded would be around 8 MBs, so it looks like you gotta upgrade your memory stick. Anyways, the game is fun for awhile until it gets extremely hard then you just wanna quit and stop playing games. Pretty fun using the power-ups against the opponent, allthough I can't destroy them for some reason.

Learning Curve: 10-20 Min

80
Gameplay: 70
WipEout Pure takes a non-linear approach to gameplay, branching out into several racing disciplines, all of which are available right from the start: Single Race, Tournament, Time Trial and Zone (There is also Free Play, but this does not contribute to your progress). The main problem is that Single Race, Tournament and Time Trial all use exactly the same tracks, of which there are not many, with a different goal. This leads to considerable repetitivity as you play the tracks over and over again to further your progress. The upside of this is that you learn to master all of the tracks, which is essential considering the steep difficulty level.

Graphics: 80
It's a funny thing with this game, when I started playing it for the first time I thought that the graphics were pretty average. But as I continued to play, I realised that there was a considerable amount of eye candy that I had been missing, most probably because of the size of the screen. Sure, the graphics didn't instantly grab my attention, but they certainly earned it.

Sound: 90
It's hard to be objective on the sound, because you either like it or hate it. I like it. The quick, driving trance music is well suited to the theme of the game, and there is enough variety to keep you happy. The engine sounds are a bit dodgy, they sound a bit like a moped on steroids when you can hear them, but they're reasonably quiet and unobtrusive. The weapon sounds are beefy and realistic, and the spoken warnings of enemy fire are handy.

Loading times: 80
I would like to ask the people who have penalised this game for its loading times whether they have played Midnight Club 3. This is a breeze compared to it, and the loading times don't really get in the way, 10 seconds of wating won't kill you.

Value: 80
I'm still not entirely sure if this game is really worth my $79.95 NZD, but by the looks of it it's addictive enough to keep me coming back for more.

I've played games since the NES (im 17 currently) and this game would definately be under that catagory of "wow mom I should have rented this game..." People probably won't like me saying that but I really didn't like this game at all. The controls suck, the graphics are ok, the music blows and the online updates and whatnot are pointless. You're better off buying Ridge Racer for the visuals or MC3:DUB. Now im not saying this game just plain sucks. But I personally dont like it at all.

Wipeout pure is the or one of the best racing games for the Sony PSP at the moment. It is not just a typical racing game. This game is set in the future and also is like death match race where you can pick up numerous weapons and fire them at other ships. If you damage the other ships enough they will explode (WooT) and that ship will be out of that current race. The game has multiple difficulties with interesting and fun AI to race against. There is also a Gold medal system where you earn 1 gold medal for coming first and if you race that same race and come 1st again you won't recieve a gold medal which makes you wanna get more gold medals which also allow you to unlock a galley of stunning hand drawn pictures. The main attaction to this game will most likely be Wipeout series lovers who would love to have wipeout on their PSPs.

This game is Awesome I recommend you buy it, now!

Very good game and very addictive
• Fast paced
• Good graphics

• Good track design
• Con: steap difficulty for begining racers
• Con: NO STORY/CAREER MODE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gameplay - 90
For what it is, it's great. It's an awesome racer, only thing is, it gets a little difficult for me and I haven't unlocked past Rapier speed.

Graphics - 94
Nice graphics, very good and showcases the PSP's power very well.

Load Times - 79
Load times are a little long, but still better than NFL Street's.

Sound - 45
I could do without the techno crap that comes with this game, I have it turned off. The weapons, ships and enviromental sounds, however, are good for the game type.

Downloadable Content - 100
Come on, only one thing is better than the web browser (which is now worthless), and that's the ability to download new tracks, ships and skins. This adds to the replay value tremendously. The 32 mb stick will not hold all the updates, so you'll need a bigger one if you want the full experience. This is definitely a game you want, whereas other racers will get old, this one will have new blood pumped into it over time.

90
I can't stop playing this game. The grapics are amazing, although the sound is basically annoying techno. I wish you could import saved mp3s to add to the playlist but you cant. At first I found the game to be extremely frustrating, but after awhile of mastering the controls it becomes much easier. You get some really cool wepons to add to the gameplay too. This is the only racing game I have so far so I can't compare it to other games, but I love it and you could too for only 40 bucks.

94
Excellent game, review sites like Gamespot, IGN all gave this game great marks. However some of the negative "reviewers" here collide into two main qualms: 1) "same track over and over again", 2) slow speed.

1) There are about 16 tracks, 12 of them to unlock in the game, plus much more through the Gamma packs. Unlike other games like Ridge Racers, every single track is unique from each other and highly detailed. Plus every track has at least 3-4 different points that are very memorable. The fact that some of the reviewers mention that there are only 4 tracks is because they are so terrible that they managed not to have unlocked anything, yet it's really childsplay at the early levels.

2) There are 5 different classes of racing, the first class, Vector, is the slowest and sluggish. The highest class, Phantom however requires such reactions that even the most challenging stages of Ridge Racers becomes rather monotonous and very boring in comparison.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game but to see some reviewers here apparently not capable of even unlocking a faster speed class or tracks then giving the game a poor review makes it unfathomable how terrible they must have been as a gamer.

92
I got it mostly for the browser and then found out WOW this game is Good! And with all these new tracks and ship and skins, this is the game that keeps on giving.

Playability: Good make sure you use the L & R!
Load times: Good (they're not anywhere as long as the race so thats the good thing!).
Graphics: OMG! Best PSP graphics yet. Dare I say on par with PS2?
Sound: Great! and with new songs, even better! Lets hope we get more!

+ Great racing game
+ If you dont have 2.00 (JPN) you can use a web browser hack!
+ Free new tracks!
+ Never too easy

- All these track will take up space, I think they take up about 20+ mb.

Ok
95
Great graphics, good gameplay.

92
Wipeout Pure is a fantastic game. In my opinion, it is the best launch game that came out with the PSP. The gameplay is great, with controls that take some getting used to, but are possible to master. You have great control of your ship. The load times are pretty normal, not noticeably fast or slow. The graphics are fantastic.

Every once in a while, take time for a free run and just go slow and admire the landscapes. People don't notice the wonderful graphics because we are all flying through the courses. The sound is great, with an awesome techno soundtrack from big names. Very cool hovering engine noises, and great explosion and impact sounds.

One could argue that it is not deep, and gets old. But when you consider the unlockables and gamma packs, this is a game that will keep you coming back as much as the next one.

Overall, a great value and game.

95
Many bought it for the web browser hack, including me. But I found this challenging racer to be gorgeous and addictive. Plus the updates to the game are great, coming once every two months for great replay value.

55
I traded for this game in order to satiate my desire to see the web browser hack in action. While the web browser worked, it was not terrifically impressive, versatile, or user friendly. The novelty of surfing the internet over my PSP died after a few days, which meant the only thing remaining was to actually play the game.

The fast paced action of this game leads to fast paced movement of one’s fingers in order to control one’s ship, which leads to streaks and smears over the face of the PSP. I got tired of having to clean my PSP after each iteration of playing this game, and so I stopped playing. Anyone who cares about the appearance of their PSP ought to “steer clear” of this game.

For those who do not care if their PSP is covered in grime, the game does capture the feel of the previous Wipeout games. The ships offer a wide enough range of abilities so one can kill endless amounts of time trying each track with each available car. The audio is acceptable, the tracks are neat, and the game offers enough stuff to keep one entertained for a plethora of hours as one attempts to beat old records, earn medals, and other such things.

So, in conclusion, the web browser is novel, the game is acceptable, and playing the game leads to a very disheveled looking PSP.

97
I first played the original Wipeout when it came out on the PS1 back in '95. Its futuristic looks and original electronica soundtrack is something that stuck with me like a parasite ever since. When the second, third, and fourth installments came out, I was the first in line. Logically, when I picked up my PSP a few months ago, this had to be the game I'd have, since I was only gonna have one.

Graphics: 95%

So, I bought the PSP and Wipeout Pure. I was SO excited about checking out this game, that I had to sort of put it off as the last thing I would touch when I got home, kinda like when you were back in grade school and you would save the best of your meal at lunch for just before you had to head back to class (but maybe I'm the only weirdo that puts off the best things for last, dunno). I opened my brand new PSP (which was perfect w/no dead pixels or anything), and was instantly shocked at the beauty that was before me, with its shiny goodness and all. I had never even seen a PSP before I got it, just knew I had to get it! First I tried the demo that comes with it (and avoided looking at the video of WO:P). I was sold. Finally, I worked out the courage to open WO:P.

If you must see why people rave so much about the power of the PSP, then just look no further than Wipeout Pure. The graphics blew me away, and are identical to what you'd expect from a PS2 game. The levels are exquisitely detailed with animated billboards (It is the FUTURE, remember?), highly... er... high polygon buildings, colored lighting that jumps out at you all over your face, and all the other next-gen mumbo-jumbo. Lets just say that the graphics are PURE eye-candy (sorry, I'm an idiot...). If you want to get a game that shows off your new PSP's graphics muscle, look no further.

Gameplay: 100%

No, I'm not taking that score back, you Wipeout nay-sayers. This game is just packed with so much gameplay and replay value that I had to be sedated and beaten to put it down, true story. OK, back to reality. I was actually sick in bed for two weeks after I bought this puppy, and I was fortunate enough to be able to play with my new toy for those two weeks without interruption. I mean to tell you that I played it for at least 5 hours a day EVERY day. I didn't get tired of it, just a little dizzy and hungry and kinda smelly.

The game has many things to keep you coming back, especially if you're like me and are easily suseptible (sp?) to the many addictions and substances in this world. That's what this game has, SUBSTANCE. The different game modes are as follows:

Tournament - Race for the lead in a series of ever-increasingly-difficult-er tracks, which this game has about 14 after you download the Gamma pack (which if I don't forget, I'll get to later). The tournament is split into like, 4 or 5 different sub-tournaments, spanning the different tracks.

Time Trial - You guessed it. It's just you and the clock on this mode, plus you can save ghost ships and race against yourself quite literally. You'll be saying, damn I friggin suck, look at that! Like, all the time. At least I do. But this doesn't just apply to the game.

Single Race - Choose track, choose ship, and watch the battery run out as you doze off from not having slept in days playing this damn game. If you want to get all the gold medals to look at all them purdy pictures you can unlock, knock yourself out, you'll have to play this mode quite a bit. If you don't care about getting the frickin' gold medals, then why don't you just go eat some cheesecake instead? Or watch cartoons, or mow the lawn, or go to PSP411 and write "why am
I bored? Where are the RPGs? Should I trade my PSP for a Gameboy Color with power rangers?". Seriously Single Race is like all pimp, and truly r0%0rz.

Zone - You pick a ship, and hope for the best as you cross "zones" and your speed increases exponentially. Try not to crash a whole lot, or you won't unlock a whole lot of anything. The ships and the tracks are made too look bluish and pretty much all look the same, which is the only drawback here, but this is just a mini game anywayz. Don't go straight to this mode when you first get this game thinking that it's all gonna look the same, don't you dare. It's still pretty fun, but I haven't gone back to this mode after I unlocked everything here. Fun nevertheless.

So there you have all the different gameplay modes, then you have the standard options menus, and the little extra nik-naks (I promise I won't use that word again in PSP411). The load times are there, but hardly noticeable or excrutiating. Just bear with the game as it tries to access its goodness from the tiny disc. Puny Mortal.

It's a pretty tough game as you progress actually. It starts dreadfully slow in Vector mode, and is mind-alteringly fast on Phantom, and there are 3 other classes in between of increasing speed and difficulty. If you're new to Wipeout, shame on you. The gameplay is unique and addicting, and mere foolish words cannot describe it. It's gonna be kinda an adjustment to learn, but you'll be all the better once you master it and get some technique. OH, by the way, I forgot to mention this is a racing game.

It's not just a racing game though, as you get pick-ups and power-up, and must shoot your opponents to slow them down and maybe (if you're l33t) destroy them. There's many weapons that you get, but I'm too lazy to explain them too you, plus, probably someone already did. You also get speed boosts. I wanna go on to the next section, which is:

Sound: 95%

When I played the first Wipeout and later XL, I got to liking what the developers were doing in setting up an uber-futuristic environment with their mix of solid techno beats. The two Wipeout games that came after were kinda disappointing in the music department to me, like the music was kind of lacking. Just my opinion, live with it. This time around, I think the developers are going back to the classic Wipout roots, cause the collection they've compiled is sure to get your heart pumpin' and your juices flowing (eew). Well, I could be biased. There's a whole lot of music tracks to listen to, which I was happy they added a music player and playlist editing tool, cause like 3 tracks were so annoying. The rest are awesome though.

The only thing that disappointed me in the sound, was that they did away with the robotic voice announcer guy from Wipeout XL/2097, but hey, they did away with that back in Wipeout 3, so that's nit-picky. It's my review though, so I'm taking 5% from the score just for that, and I plead for mr. robo-voice to make his triumphant return in the next game to come.

Well, the sounds are what you'd expect from Wipeout, and if you have never played Wipeout, then get it and see for yourself. Besides, it'd be kinda silly to describe sounds in this review, cause they would look kinda like this "vraaggh! pahw phssh! boom, shhhlckh!" Don't let my stupidity deter you from buying this game please. There's nothing here to detract from the score or make you want to soil yourself, so do not be afraid.

Value: 100%

OK, so it costs $40. Big deal, there's some total garbage out there that's going for $50. If you got the money, it's worth every penny. If you don't have the money, some ideas would be: rob a bank, get a loan, refinance your house, sell you Nintendo DS, sell your PSP, beg the guy at EB games to just let you have it, or maybe save for a better tomorrow. I just can't recommend much over this. There are some other jewels out there in the world of PSP, a good alternative would be Ridge Racer if this game ain't your bag. But I warn you: You're making a big mistake, I think. If you hate racing games, then look elsewhere, 'cause you'll be doin' lots of racing in this one.

This game has lots of replay value and will be one of the top games in your collection. It's loaded with extras and is at the moment the only game that's software upgradeable (YES! I remembered to elaborate on this!). You can download software patches that save to your memory stick with new tracks, skins, ships, and someday even music. There's just so much to keep you coming back. Buy this game and enjoy!

Overall: 97%

This is not an average, it's probably not even a fair score for whatever reason. Lemme just tell you, this game succeeds in every department. You won't regret the purchase, and the economy will prosper from your spending and your taxes. Also, you'll save trees 'cause the box is made of plastic and not paper or cotton. I hope this review was helpful to you, cause it sure did give me something to do with all this time I got while I'm here in prison.

95
I love this game! Plain and simple!

91
This game has great visuals, good music, and its just plain fun to play. I tend to keep coming back to this game over and over again.

75
It really isn't that great of a game, cool graphics and you get to interact with the race more than if you were just racing. The main reason I would recommend buying this game is because of the web browser glitch. If you make a special connection you can browse the internet on your PSP. That is awesome

99
This game may seem simple at first glance, but it is very deep and challenging. The graphics are great, no ghosting. The audio is superb with great ambient music.

Gameplay is a more polished version of the original. You can use the D-pad or analog stick (great for avoiding cramps). The online updates are icing on the cake. The game never gets stale.

Of all the launch titles this one is my fave.

94
This was the first PSP game I got. What brought me to this game was the hack that allows you to browse the internet. Some of the loading times for this game are a bit long but totally worth it when you start to race. The game has amazing graphics that you have to go into free run and just admire the detail of things that you don't see while racing. The controls are perfect and completely customizable. The soundtrack to this game is great for techno lovers and fits the game perfectly. And the download packs that give you extra tracks, ships, and menu skins make this game one great package.

95
You shouldn't have any problem getting past the first two classes, but after that, it hits you and doesn't let go. I don't mind this so much, but the jump seems a bit harsh, and I hate playing racing games that are challenging in that it feels like the AI cheats you, which is how this game comes off *sometimes* in the harder stages. Overall though, I enjoy it a lot, especially the Zones, those are a lot of fun.

90
You all know the bitter disappointment that Wipeout Fusion served to all the euro gamers, as you Americans couldn't get a taste of this poor addition to the wipeout series. But Wipeout Pure is something else. Upon buying the game I knew it was going to be fantastic and I wasn't disappointed. Even the front page of the game on the PSP menu screen was entertaining, offering me a taste of what was to come. The menu screens look very cool, suited to the typical demographic who would buy a PSP.

The actual gameplay is near perfect, it offers a futuristic racing experience which could never had been before anticipated on a handheld. The weapons option in races let you do some cool stuff, like lay down mines for ships behind you or set off an earthquake that shatters everything in front of you, very helpful for when you're stuck in 8th position. The speed that you experience when playing the game is simpy mind-blowing when you go through speeds of over 600mph, crashing into walls is inevitable, but not if you can master the bends and airbrakes in the other speed classes.

The visuals in this game have to be one of the best on offer for the PSP, all of the ships look great and the enviroments in which you race in are very futuristic, keeping faithful to the wipeout series. As for the multiplayer option in the game, it is seamless, making for very easy and entertaining gameplay with your friends. As you all know, the downloads that have been offered have been downloaded by many, and the new tracks, ships and skins for the menu screens are exciting additions to an already enthralling game, as far as I'm aware three gamma packs are available to Japanese gamers and a few for American PSP owners too. The browser 'hack' in this game is not more than a gimmick but of course this very slow browser wasn't meant for the gamers pleasure.

But with all good things, there are obviously some low points to this game. One con that will bother most gamers are the frame-rate problems, which have been encountered in other PSP games too. This happens when there is a lot of action going on, like when a bomb goes off in front of five ships, it can get very annoying at times. Another slight problem is that loading times are a tad on the long side, you can expect about seven seconds wait in between races.

Nearly all I have is praise for this game, except for the shorfalls in some areas which don't cause too much bother during gameplay. This has to be one of the best games on the PSP, if not the best. Pure has revitalised the wipeout series and its great.

95
Wipeout Pure is a must own for all PSP users. This game seems to be made for a handheld system as it alows great graphics, speed, and fun to be had quickly. Colors are amazing and there are plenty of little things in the background to be impressed by. The downloadable Gamma Packs is the icing on the cake as they add more replay to an already playable game.

96
How can you not be a fan of this game? It's a great concept for a game and a great new version. Gets tough to complete once you get past rapier ship class. I wish there were more ships available though, and more customisations that I could apply. Definitely one to add to your collection though and once you do expect many sleepless nights after addiction sets in.

99
I got the game in March and I am still enjoying all the fun the game has to offer. The gameplay is awesome and the L and R shoulder buttons really help alot. The graphics are perfect. The music is what made me keep playing this game over and over all the time. Once you get a golds on any one of the tracks you unlock really cool artwork. The game also has a download feature that lets you download new ships, skins, and tracks. One of my favorite feature is the PSP webbrowser, it's not as fast as computer but it works perfect. This is my favorite Wipeout game and I hope they make another one.

90
I've been playing the series since the beginning (WipEout for PS1) and so far this is the best WipEout game out there. It's not a perfect game and has its small annoyances here and there, for example not showing medals earned when selecting tracks. And NegCon support is missing of course.

85
At first I didnt like it but then I read the manual and learned the controls. I haven't really played this much yet but from what I have so far there are 8 tracks and 8 vehicles. Not much to work with but fun nonetheless. The game doesn't do a very good job of making you feel like you're going 500+mph, you seem like you're in a mini cooper when going 200mph.

Playability: 8 - the game is pretty fun
Load times: 9 - loads quickly
Graphics: 9.5 - beautiful game
Value: 8.5 - I only payed $35 so I think I got my money's worth
Sound: 7 - I absolutely despise techno
Track layouts: 9 - only 8 tracks but they are cool tracks

98
There is NOTHING in this game to make me give it a bad rating. it has multiplayer, fun gameplay with weapons, just the right amount of difficulty, and offers downloadable packs to keep you satisfied. I played for 20+ hours and have'nt once been bored. This game will keep you entertained for a LONG TIME.

91
This is my 1st game for the PSP and it's one of the best purchases I've made. Awesome looking ships, great coloring and smooth looking tracks. It's a must have.

84
I knew what to expect having played the WipeOut franchise extensively, and this game doesn't dissapoint.

Pros: Great graphics, always cool music, downloadable Content

Cons: Nothing new

91
This is hands down my fav PSP game! Why? Aweome intro. Awesome graphics. Easy to get into game play. Great music. Great Replay value. Web Access. Download ships, tracks and music. Great scoring system and saving. Great unlockable artwork. Great multiplayer. I have about 8 PSP games and have played quite a few others. LOVE IT! Back to the roots of wipeout!

95
Wipeout Pure is a futuristic, strap-your-carcass-in-rip-your-skin -off hovercraft racing game. Ever played Wipeout on the PS1? Ever wanted it in to-go size but still streaking by so fast that it makes you hurl your early morning coffee right in your co-worker’s lap? Then praise Sony your prayers have not gone unheard! Strap yourselves in and get ready for some 300-mph kick to your nads.

Graphics

The PSP has already impressed me with some stunning visuals in other games, but this is by far the best I’ve played especially the effects, unlike Twisted Metal. The explosions, jet-streams, and special pick-up attacks are render gorgeously on the PSP. This game truly shows off what every PSP game should look like. The futuristic-technological environment reminded me of Tron for some reason. Anyway, they are also equally interesting, but you don’t really have enough time to appreciate or even notice that these backgrounds even exist. The sense of speed is godly, it made me feel like I was really controlling the AG and it only served to increase my adrenaline flow by a tenfold, I was not disappointed. Perfect Score, hands down. 10/10

Sound

What would a jet sound like if you flew three feet above the ground? Probably like the AGS, only they’ll sound better and won’t split your head in half. The sound design was extremely dynamic. From the boost-pad to the missiles, or even the earthquake attack sounded as if I was actually inside that steel coffin speeding to my death at only waiting to hear the missile drill be into the wall. The music was entertaining at first with such a variety that it almost blew my mind, almost. After a few hours of playing this title I decided to turn the crappiness to 0%. But, overall the audio was nice. 8.5/10

Gameplay

Hold X, hit boost, air-brake, repeat. Repetitions never played so good and neither did any racer I’ve ever played. Along with the simple scheme that plays like the classic the weapons feel right, too. Even though you’ll curse that they were in there, but at least it doesn’t take the game down even a bit. The difficulty can be a bit rough when I reached the flash level tracks I was introduced to Mr. Wipeout’s bottomless can of ownage. The AI, unfortunately, can out do you anytime it pleases and races in straight lines like robots making even the 7th place pilot hard to pass. Even so, this game has some serious addictive qualities and zone mode was just what I’d been looking for in a racer and the multi player, whoo! Oh, the browser hack does account for something here. I doubt Rivals or DUB have any chance against this great title. 10/10

94
This game is worth your money. The game it self is pretty desent. It gets pretty challenging after the first few rounds, but other than that, it has really nice graphics and music. The best part is the Wipeout Browser that lets you surf the Internet. Overal, a good game to add to your collection!

85
Didn't play wipeout on snes, so this was my first experience. This game is pretty fun. Nothing special about it. One thing bad is the lack of racing tracks. You basically race in the same old track over and over again. Something good about this game is the ability to surf the web (very limited) on your psp.

81
Wow... I love the look of this game, and was a huge fan of Wipeout 2097/XL, but this was the biggest letdown of the series yet, beating WO3. Instead of tight fast racing, you try to slowly maneuver a drifty hovercraft through ridiculously twisty overdesigned tracks while listening to generic wallpaper techno. The only way to move quickly is to constantly hit the tiny speed arrows, but they usually only last a split second until you have to slam on the brakes for another 180... or they fire you straight into a wall or into a bottomless pit.

It's very obvious that Psygnosis is no longer making the series -- Studio Liverpool did clearly "study the classic Wipeout games" since graphically it's perfect. It looks just like you'd expect if Wipeout 3 never happened, and the series ran straight onto next-gen consoles. On the bright side, it's also not all about eliminating your opponents or balancing boost and shield reserves anymore, and you can absorb any item to boost shields - very handy.

Not that this game doesn't have its selling points, but it's way more Marble Madness than Wipeout. It doesn't even feel like a racing game; it's just an absurd puzzle to cope with the anti-speed tracks. If you want the PSP game with the most "Wipeout XL" feel to it, I kid you not, get Ridge Racer. It's fast, fun, full of cars and tracks, and packed with great design. Wipeout Pure could be a great game, but it's not Wipeout by a long shot.

94
A variety of ships, weapons, tracks and styles of play. This will definitely keep you playing until the anticipated games are released. Downloadable upgrades are fantastic and multiplayer is really fun.

95
Graphics are very good, sound is cool, replay value is good. And multiplayer rocks! Must have!

92
This game has great graphics, stuff crashing, and a web browser. Must have (note the game itself gets a 70 but when you add downloadable content, and a great barebones browser its value skyrockets).

Bottom Line: you would pay 40 dollar for the Easter eggs, plus you get a great game.

97
This game rocks! I always enjoyed the original Wipeout games, so I expected to feel the same for Wipeout Pure. I never imagined the level of work that went into making this game so polished!

Between the Single Race, Tournament, Zone, Free Play, and multiplayer modes, there is always something to do on this game. If I want to just sit down for some insanely fast fun that won't take too long, the Zone mode is perfect. If I'm ready for a good 15 minute session, the Tournament is a blast! I have yet to play multiplayer, but I have 3 other friends that own this, so it is a matter of time!

The great thing about this game is the little details that were added to it. The soundtrack is amazing. The gallery images for winning a gold medal is a nice touch. The stats are absolutely exhaustive! I laughed when I scrolled down the stat list to see a "Time spent reading the stats" stat at the bottom - these people though of everythng! =)

Definitly a must-have for the PSP - even if you're like me and don't like racing games!

9
Don't like the game but have to have for PSP web portal.

89
This is my one and only game at the moment and I am very happy with it. I have had it for over a month now and it it's not lost it's appeal, but it does get extremely hard to win tournaments and single races in the final difficulty level. I still havn't completed it yet! At the time of writing the first add-on pack has just been released and it certainly adds some extra longevity. So I'll give this an 89/100 for now, but this will probably rise as more add-on packs are released.

95
Graphics
The graphics on this game are simply beautiful. Everything is clean and detailed as expected of a PSP game, and then some. Brilliant lighting and even little details such as rain splatters (which stop when cover is present) are displayed wonderfully.

Sound
Sound seems limited to only the PSP's hardware and headphones. Powerful thrusters and missile detonations spice up the sound while the in-game's soundtrack keeps you in the mood for speed and action. Unfortunately some of the tracks are rather dull, though the variety makes up for this.

Gameplay
Summed it, playing this game is absolutely exhilerating. With multiple game modes, crafts, and courses, there is no limit to the fun.

Value
Immense replayability. Even better, new downloads including skins, crafts, and music will be released periodically. Play on the internet or against locals, and the challenge never ends.

99
I've been a fan of Wipeout since version 1 and I've played iterations of it that totally sucked (e.g. Mac/PC version). Wipeout Pure restored my faith in the series with decent racing mixed with random weapons gameplay to spice things up. I love the designer republic graphics and electronica music so much, a very well packaged game in terms of asthetics. I wish I could pump the music up way louder on my PSP though. In terms of longevity, the Wipeout Pure recently offered downloadable gamepacks and wireless multiplayer mode. Highly recommended!

85
This has been massively covered already. What more can I say?

Wi-fi rocks on it and the game ain't so bad.

99
BEST RACING GAME EVER, BAR-NONE. Cool cars, cool tracks, you can shoot down your enemy while you moves on a sleek super fast track.

93
The graphics in wipeout pure are jaw droping and the sound and music are simply short of pure senesory nirvania.

The gameplay in Wipeout is intense head to head racing. Although some of the tracks can be unforgiving to the uninitiated. But once you have the controls down do you'll have a blast. The action never lets up and with many modes to play there will be always a high replayability with this game. Not only that, there will downloadable tracks and new hovercrafts that will soon be out.

A must have in your gaming libary

I originally just bought this game for the web browser but when I started playing the game I was really surprised how good it was.

99
This is good game, detailed. And the browser makes this game just perfect.

95
I have to say that I'm not a fan of racing games but never playing the series I took a flyer on it and it was the best money I spent on a game in awhile. The graphics are very solid and load times are quick unlike Untold Legends. the tracks and different speeders are very solid and the downloadable tracks make this game go over the top compared to others.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are amazing, as you speed through futuristic cities, blow opponent ships up, and go up and over the speed of 800 mph, you feel it, and see it. The game has a lot of style, and shows it everywhere. My only gripe, and i had to search for it, was that it didnt quite reach 60 frames per sec, and i had to look hard to see, but it came damn close. 10/10. Graphics are great.

Gameplay

Even for newcomers, wipeout is a very easy game to pick up and play. I have played wipeout when it was on the PSone, so I was already accustomed to the controls, and for wipeout pros, nothing has changed. The L shoulder button is to airbrake on the left, R for the airbrake on the right. The square button is to use the weapon pick-up, and the circle is to absorb, ill talk about this a little later. The x button is thrust, and the triangle button is the rear camera, to see what is behind you. An interesting thing about wipeout pure, is that it gives you the option to absorb, or use te weapons. If the weapon is good, and you need to use it, you can use it, but say your shields are low, or the weapon wont help you at the moment, you can choose to absorb it, to increase your shield a bit. This choice is a nice addition and gives you a choice. Other things that you can do during the came are pressing left right left or right left right, to a barrel roll either way while you are in the air. Not only does this move look cool, but when you hit the ground, you get a little boost to put you ahead a bit.

To show you it is easy to pick up for new comers, ill tell you a quick story. I give my frind my psp, loaded up with wipeout pure, and he started to play. he absolutely loved it, he knew how to steer the ship, and use the weapons, from just playing with it for a minute or two. This kid only has nintendo 64 as a gaming system, and has never played psp or wipeout, or seen both of them. I was a amazed how easy it was for him to play it.

The gameplay is addictive because I can pick it up and play it for a few minutes in single race mode, or zone, or time trial. Or i can pick it up and play it for an hour or two, in tournament mode. As you unlock ships and gain new levels, the game gets better. You get faster classes, and each time you get a gold medal, you get some concept art or vehicle sketches as a little prize, which are all nice things to uncover. the game gets very immersive if you want it to, or if you are a wipeout or racing junkie, and you need a quick fix, it will give you that too. The game is great. I will give it a 10/10 for gameplay.

Overall

This game is a solid launch title for the psp and everyone willl enjoy it. My only gripe is the slightly slow loading times, but it is nice to have a couple of seconds to recoup from a close race, or a long tournament. Wipeout Pure gets a 97. Pick it up, have a good time!

90
I actually bought this game for the hack. But when I started playing I started enjoying the game more and more.

95
If you love racers and have a PSP, you gotta have WipEout Pure - it's that simple! This IS the BEST game for the system. Not even for the fans only, but for everyone who enjoys a sense of speed, great graphics & SFX, smooth framerates, brilliantly designed tracks, weapons and game modes - and everything is accompanied with perfect sound and music, real "honey to your ears".

I thought the first few tracks were genius (rather classic and standard, but eye-candy), but when I later saw falling rain, snow, or serpentine-like track up high in the clouds I was speechless. If you want to show someone the FORCE of PSP - show them W.Pure and watch the jaw-drop. And if the latest gossip of the PSP locked at 222MHz is true AND Wipeout looks like this, the future for Sony's little child can't be brighter...

WOW! Talk about some high-speed graphics!

I bought this specifically to get in on the webbrowsing 'hacks' that people were talking about online, but I will admit that the game is really worth having. Sure, I am one of those guys that looks for the cheats on DAY ONE of purchasing the game. However, after playing it for a short time, I think I will actually start from zero for the fun of growing in skill!

95
This game is the first one I purchased for my psp and let me tell you I would recomend it to anyone who is looking for the best racing game on the PSP. I like the futuristic hovercraft theme alot! This was the first game I bought back in '96 on my PS1.

This fast pace racer has to be one of the best hover racing games since F-Zero GX.

Gameplay
Wipeout Pure consists of 5 Single player modes (Single Race, Tournament, Time Trial, Zone, and Free Play) Each mode lets you earn Gold medals the more gold medals you will unlock tracks and receive a title (You can not receive medals for free play).

There also is a class selection (Vector, Venom, Flash, Rapier, and Phantom) each class is slightly faster and harder Vector the easiest and Phantom the hardest.

Single Race lets you just race one track in a Tournament with out doing the hole Tournament.

Tournament consists of 4 circuits each circuit containing 4 races except the 4th one that recaps the other 3 circuit .

Time Trail is where you can compete against a set time for bronze, silver and gold and you can also compete against a ghost of your fastest lap.

Zone this is my favorite of them all. You get a cool ship called the "Zone Team" there are 4 tracks in each track it slowly gets faster and faster and faster tell your ship blows up. Each zone that you complete the faster your ship gets. (Get it?) (Hint: get gold on all 4 of the Zone tracks you unlock the Zone Team or you could just download my save over to the left and just have the zone team =D)

Free Play well I don't think I need to explain this...

Multiplayer - Haven't really had time to find some one to race around here but I did race one guy for about 2 mins and seemed vary smooth and no lag what so ever.

Weapons
There are quite a variety of these suckers from Rockets to Shields. They make the game much more exiting and adds a level of difficulty to the game.

GFX
GFX are top notch I was really surprised how smooth they are on this little handheld. I have not noticed any Ghosting or any FPS loss when playing either. 9/10

Sound
Music is top notch but the SFX are kind of generic but do a vary good job. The onboard computer in the ship also tells you if some one shoots a rocket at you or if you are coming up on to some mines. 8/10

Value
It is one of the cheaper games that came out so I have no clue why you wouldn't get it. + it has a web browser on it you cant go wrong. 10/10

99
Everything about this game is almost perfect. The menus and opening cinemas will take your breathe away, just simply gorgeous. Then you get IN game and you will be floored. I am still amazed at having something like this in a handheld, its just jaw dropping. The load screen, the particle effects (the bomb explosion is magnificent) everything is just AWESOME. I highly reccomend this to ANY and EVERYONE

98
If you have a PSP and you don't have this game you have a problem. The speed is insane in this game, it stretches the limits of your perception in Zone Mode, and the tournements are competative and exciting. If there was ever a racing game you can't miss this is it.

The best part of this game is the multiplayer if you have friends with PSPs youll have a blast. One of my roommates had a PSP too and we both picked the game up and as soon out other roommates saw it...we ended up driving 30 miles at 8:45PM to race to the mall to get the nearest available PSP and another copy of Wipeout Pure. We ended up drawing an audience with the 3 of us all racing on our PSPs at an Exxon while fuelling up for the way back.

Its fast, addictive, and non-stop. Get it.

Plus as everyone has heard by now, there is a browser available in the game with a tiny bit of tinkering that even my grandmother good figure out in 5 seconds. So go get it.

My only complaint is that this game my ruin my GPA and my chances of sleeping in the near future.

I went into an EB in London, Ontario for store opening on the 24th to pick up my PSP, and picked up Wipeout Pure along with it. I'm intensely happy with this purchase, the game is freakin sweet. The graphics blew me away, especially the lighting effects like weapon auras and lens flares look fantastic. The controls are as tight as ever for a Wipeout game, the last one i played was XL and i was instantly reminded of that fantastic title when i played the game.

The music is amazing, all the tracks sound perfect especially with the headphones. I have been playing this all the time and i'm still only on the third speed class, the replay value is intense. Added into this the fact that we will be supplied with new tracks and ships every month, this game is definitely a good one to look at if you want a solid launch title that will keep you playing.

85
really dig the game, and the haxXored web bowser
but the developers missed out on one of the coolest things.. wifi gaming! I mean, It's awesome to play adhoc against one or two of my friends, but I'd really like to be able to jump on the web and play against a person, or several persons... mainly, so I'm not always getting owned by the bots. haha

92
And right to the future!

Wow. WipEout Pure is THE best looking game on the PSP. The framerate doesn't falter much, the ships look great, the backgrounds are fascinating (and distracting too hehe) and the light effects are perfect. This doesn't just look good for a game on a portable system, it looks good for any game on any system.

As for the gameplay, you're in good hands. They've taken it back to the PSOne versions of the Wipeout series in terms of gameplay. The ships control just as they ever have and if you're familiar with any of the Wipeout games, you'll fit right in. The game retains the same Single Race/Tournament structure for the games, but there are a few differences you'll notice when you play. First, they've done away with the Pit system. Now to regain your energy, you press Circle and you will absorb any items you're currently holding. There's a new Zone mode, where you simply attempt to go as many times around a track by yourself before you blow up. The trick is... The farther you go around the track, the faster your ship goes. A truly interesting mode, to say the least. The replay value is just like any other racing game -- just keep playing until you unlock everything and get tired of it, heh. But with the WiFi support, you should be able to get some great multiplayer games going.

If you're looking for an alternative to Ridge Racer as the premiere racing game on the PSP, look no further. This game will suck you in and leave you begging for more.

99
This is one of the best futuristic racing game that i've ever played. it's better than the previous wipeout releases. Graphics and gameplay are perfect in my opinion. This game is the second best racing game on my personal list. My first is still GT4.

95
Nostalgia has never felt so good...the best wipe out ever... this is probably the only launch game that is a must-have.

Wow
94
This is the best game out of the 4 I own, it has the best graphics, and feel. Now woth custon controlls you can't pry this out of my hands!

I was happy to see the Wipeout series return to another one of Sony's consoles. Although I was a bit worried at first because of the last attempt on the PS2 (Wipeout Fusion, also by Studio Liverpool). Thankfully, Wipeout Pure is just as the name suggests: a pure return to the glory that the Wipeout series once was. Fans of the Wipeout series should feel at home with this game, while newcomers will enjoy this high-speed futuristic racer.

In terms of graphics, this game really shines on the PSP. The texture quality is unbelievable, while the lighting effects are just jaw dropping. Everything from the subtle light changes at the end of the tunnel to rain droplets on the screen really show how much artisitc work was put into this game. This could easily be the best looking game for the PSP's launch. The music in this game is also superb. A large array of electronic-type music fits in perfectly with the game, as it did with past Wipeout games.

The game plays just like many racers out there. You hop into one of the futuristic vehicles, and you're off for a good ride. The controls are pretty solid. The L and R shoulder buttons are used for the airbrakes, the X button for acceleration, etc. It may take a good half-hour to an hour, depending on your skill and familiarity with Wipeout's style of tracks, to learn and become adjusted to Wipeout Pure's controls. The tracks come with all sorts of twists and turns, with speed boosts and pickups along the way. There are a total of five (5) different speed classes, with each one faster than the next. You start out slow, then you work your way up, all while picking up speed.

The gameplay modes are a simple enough concept to grasp. You have basic Single Player modes such as Single Race, Time Trial, and Free Race. There's also the Tournament mode, which is where you'll be spending most of your time as you try to unlock everything. There's also the "Zone" mode. This is unique in that you are placed into a single, black and white-esque track. You continue to race around the track while passing through different zones, picking up speed as you go through each zone. This is really one of the best parts of Wipeout Pure.

There are a few downsides to this otherwise excellent game. For one, the load times appear often, but are relatively short. The load screens are fun to watch, though, so don't expect to be bored while waiting. Also, the tournament mode always keeps someone one step close to you. It is a tad bit on the annoying side, but what's a good game without a good challenge, right? A quick word to those who are not familiar with the Wipeout series: before going into tournament mode, take a good free race around each track. As you unlock more, free race those tracks as well. This will help you better understand the tracks and help you out if you're having trouble with a certain track.

Overall, Wipeout Pure is the true return to the Wipeout series' glory. Fans and newcomers alike will enjoy this fast-paced futuristic racer. The visual style and the amazing gameplay and sound could easily allow this game to claim the title of best PSP launch title.

Wow, Just wow. This game is really amazing.

When you launch Wipeout, you can watch the short Cinematic if you dont press anything. DO IT. Its amazing!!

The graphics on this game are also amazing, it really helps draw you into the drivers seat and forget where you are. I am having so much fun with Wipeout it should be illeagal, there are so many different things to do in this game Ill still be trying to beat it when PSP2 comes out :P . The replay value of thisa game is 10/10 There are lot of difficulties and lots of tracks for you to race on/against, ofcourse we cant forget the awsome looking ships!

One more excellent thing about Wipeout is that eventually there will be download content....most likley tracks, ships, or new gametypes!!

Oh ya, and one of my favourite parts! With a little tinkering you can login to PSP411.com from you PSP and access the Web, even use Bookmarks :D

just a few points off because its only ad-hoc, not infustructure.

I bought Wipeout for the Browser period. I already had 2 games that I bought on launch day and was going to stay at it for a few weeks at least. When I first read about the Wipeout browser hack I ran to the store to get it.

To my own surprise I actualy enjoyed the game too. I've never been a big fan of the wipeout franchise but I have to admit futuristic racing suits well to the PSP.

A must buy if only for the net capability (untill sony release a new firmware) but also a good game.

95
Awesome!! it's really good, although I think the load times should be less (its fine but im nit-picky and think its a little too long) also the menus are kinda bland. Try switching to hacker backround it looks better. the music and graphics are the best ive seen on a portable system.also, its kinda hard too( im sure for people that played wipeout before think its fine.but i think the way the ship handles its kinda wierd, but again, thats just me)
Great game overall 9/10

any tips on beating vector tornament?
