The first time I saw this movie was from my PSP! I LOVED IT, and I re-watch it over and over again whereever I go.
If you like Kung Fu/Action/Romance/Drama you will like this. It had minimal features. But I love the Chinesse/English sub, and English/English sub Feature.

I believe everyone should have a variety of movies. Especially, a type of international movie. Crazy and un-thought-of martial arts to an interesting concept makes the world go round-n-round.

This movie is very different from Hero, but still a beautiful story with beautiful martial arts. It's much more of a love centered story than Hero was, focusing on Xiao Mei (Zhang Ziyi) who plays an assassin in the legendary House of Flying Daggers. The story is very well done, and Zhang Ziyi plays a relatively traditional role for her, so if you haven't liked her past characters you may not like this one.
Even though it's a love story, the martial arts are still beautifully executed. Combining traditional Chinese dance and martial arts together was truly breathtaking, and the latter more fanciful action scenes were done in awe-inspiring settings, you won't be disappointed.
Don't expect a Hong Kong action film here, but a truly beautiful work of art that shows the beauty of martial arts in a romantic setting.

But no more than many of my other martial arts movies. I like that I'm able to own it on UMD. The only downside is that Sony forgot to put extras on the disc. (I'm sure it was an honest mistake). Once again, flawless quality.

This is hardly my favorite Chinese film as of now. If you're looking for a huge epic battle movie, pick up Hero instead. This is a love-story, and a good one at that.
It's gripping... it keeps you tied in many knots as its plot twists and turns. But it's not all fun and games, as the beginning is extremely slow paced... I fell asleep the first time through.
You'll find that the PSP screen helps aid in this film's beauty... the director uses color to express many different moods, and you don't miss a pixel (unless one of yours is dead) with the brilliantly bright PSP screen.
Storyline wise, it was not my favorite, but still was a good movie.

This is far more romantic than Hero. Hero has better cinematography. Flying Daggers is great for it's love triangle, it's more authentic fighting and it's sense of drama.

House of Flying Daggers is a one-size-fits-all martial arts movie. Some cater only to the hardcore fans and some target a more mainstream audience, but House strikes a good balance and appeals to fanboys and newbies alike. It's worth noting that House actually has a story and isn't non-stop martial arts, so if the latter is what you're looking for, you may be disappointed. Still, what's here is dazzling, and you'll especially notice how colorful the film is; it's perfectly suited for the PSP and it simply explodes off the crystal-clear screen.
Whether there are really any flaws with the film depends on two things; first, your tolerance for CGI in martial arts movies and second, what you expect of the acting. Personally, I find it kind of cheap when martial arts movies resort to using CGI; leave that for Spider-Man. The acting is mostly very good, but you'll think on more than one occasion that another take would've helped a particular scene. But, like I said, these are minor and don't detract much from the overall experience.
The flaws of the UMD itself, however, are easier to point out. Why none of the Sony Pictures movies contain special features or a scene selection feature is beyond me. Personally I can live without special features, but since when is a lack of a scene selector acceptable?. This movie looks absolutely gorgeous and I appreciate that time and effort were spent on the video transfer, but a tad bit more could've been spent on implementing a scene selection. As far as language options go, you can choose either the original Chinese track or an English dub, and subtitles range from English 1 (subs language and on-screen text), English 2 (subs text only, for use with English dub), and French.
Overall, this is one of the better movies currently available on UMD Video. If you want a great, stylized movie with a lot of impressive martial arts that's incredibly gory and overflowing with vulgar language, buy Kill Bill. If you want a great, stylized movie with a lot of impressive martial arts that you can watch with children in the room, buy House of Flying Daggers.

Not too disappointed. But really wish that the price would drop for these movies.
