Sid Meier's Pirates is a truly intelligent game that combines smart game elements to create something addictive that will get you hooked for hours.

Although starting with low excitement you'll enter the pure fun of this game in a few minutes. In this game you create a pirate and are off fighting off different people for the sake of the many quests you must fulfill. The great thing is that there are many ways to choose how difficult your game will be; your experience, the time period you start in, and your home country(France England Spain Holland) all impact the difficulty of your custom game. So after you have chosen all the specific information about your pirate you can begin to sail.

I might also like to mention that you should get use to sailing, because you'll be doing a lot of it. When you're not sailing I'll tell you about what you can do. First let's discuss towns. In a town there are quite a few things to do. All the things help towards a very strategic game. This is a list of what you'll be doing: Speaking with the governor, visiting the tavern, trading, any related ship activities, and dividing the plunder. When speaking with the governor you'll end up doing such things as missions, dancing with his daughter, and being upgraded in rank. In the tavern you'll find yourself recruiting soldiers, taking to strangers who will tell you interesting things, speaking with the bar maid who may also aid you, and talking to the bartender who will introduce you to enemies and aid you. The rest is self explanatory.

Now let's talk about the fighting system. There are ship, sword and town battles. Ship battles will find you shooting cannon balls at an enemy. Sword battles will pair you up against a captain of your crew and you must get all the momentum, by preforming various attacks. The town battles is a simple strategy army thing. The rest of the mini games are dancing and sneaking around. Dancing is a simpler form of what we call DDR. The sneaking around is quite a fun mini game were you must dodge guards to get to a certain goal. Now I've finished explaining the game play so let's move on to the graphics. The game also presents itself really well in the graphics department. The graphics are honestly like those of the Ps2. You'll be surrounded by very detailed, yet clear backgrounds. There are many trees and other things that make that certain place look like what it is. While sailing you will see the water shining realistically with both individual sparkles and large amounts of water exploding with sunlight . The people also look very nice. They all wear detailed clothing on which you can see every little wrinkle and shaded area. Really the visual helps suck you into the game, especially if there are many scenarios you have not yet seen. So now it is time for the weak point of the game. Do you like various boring music from the 1600's NO? That's what thought and although there are many different songs in the game, none of them are quite good... At all. You'll simply be listening to really really old instrumental stuff, and thats not fun. However the music does manage to fit the scenario, and maybe some music lovers will like it (highly unlikely). So the summary of the game??? well its highly addictive and although there are serious musical flaws you are still getting alot for your money.

Okay, let me start off by saying that this game is very different and not easy to generalize. That said, I begin.

Sid Mier's Pirates is a game that allows you to openly live the life of a pirate on the Spanish Main in the 1600s. When I say open I mean OPEN. The game board is a map of the Carribean covered in many locations. Each location is different in subtle ways. Depending on your goals for your character, you can manipulate the world and achieve many things. I don't think any 2 gaming expierences would be the same.

In the game you can amass wealth by conquering ships, ally with governments and sack towns in their name, hunt and dominate pirates, earn reputations, romance governer's daughters (that come in 'plain, attractive and beautiful'), dance with them, buy them jewels, defend their honor, and the list goes on. During the course of the game your character grows old and his health varies. The most entertaining part of this game, is that I actually began to really care about the character's actions.

Aside from the non-linear portions of the game is the linear story that you can choose to follow. But there is no drawback to not following it.

Graphics: Bright and effective. I enjoy the graphics on this game. They are perfect for what the game wants to achieve. The graphics do get a bit repetitive, though. For example: All nobles of the same nationality look the same. Tavern folks are all the same except for their hair color. Animations can get a bit repetitive as well. The graphics are fun.

Sound: There are no character voices, this may be due to the non-linear nature of the game. but the grunts and sighs accompany the text well and different nationalities have different accents. The music is good but gets repetitive after a while.

Gameplay: This is an interesting portion of the game. The gameplay is best described by comparing the facets of the game to mini-games. Every time you do something, it is very simple with easy controls. The game overall is very detailed, but there is no one portion of the game that is very detailed. For example: When fencing, there are 3 attacks, 3 blocks and a taunt. When you get a hit you knock your opponent back a space. You win by knocking the opponent all the way off the ship. It is simple. But the beauty is that all the little games are connected and aware of one another. The game is efficient and big.

Controls: They are VERY simple. They make the gameplay pretty quick.

Load times: Short. No more than 20 seconds or so. The simplicity of the gameplay makes this easy.

Other: At the time of this review there is only ad-hoc play. It is a really simple ship battle game. It is not that much fun. This could be a very good MMOgame.

Overall: I really like this game. It is very addictive. It basically takes all the most important facets of pirate life in the 1600s from romance to crew morale, and boils them into an addictively simple game.
