This was one of my first games on PSP, and at first I was very disappointed as it was almost impossible to do a fireball. Then playing other games I realised it was the pad itseld that had a problem. I managed to fix the problem. Now it works as tight as on my Neo Geo! And it has improved my gaming on PSP in all other games as well.
Darkstalkers is a pretty fun 2D fighter, but I'm not so fond of the character roster.

Welcome to the midnight hour, rest your head safe in bed, you will see the creepy crawlies knocking at your door this game kicks ass.
Ok, that did not rhyme but it's still the opening of my review. I have to say it had simple yet addictive gameplay, graphics are 2D but who gives a flying kick. I mean, look -- hot girls that kick ass, what more do you want?

Everyone knows that the quality of the PSP games look somewhat like a combination of the PS1 and PS2 graphics, for example, not as blocky and pixelated as a PS1 game, but not as spiffy as a PS2 game, but THIS game is all around perfect concerning graphics and sound but the controls are a little bit dissapointing.
I remember playing Vampire Savior way back in the mid 90´s when I was a kid, and it´s my favorite 2D fighting game series after Street Fighter. Comparing Darkstalkers: The Chaos Tower to the original arcade versions is like watching the reflection of the arcade game in a mirror, every character sprite is neatly included in the PSP version, the animations in most characters are EXTRAORDINARY fluid. For example, see how fluid Felicia´s or Demitri´s animations are when you have them walking forward or backwards, it´s almost like watching an anime!
The art is simply amazing, there´s a very good balance in the character designs, just imagine Dracula on steroids with a punk hair style, and you have Demitri! BTW, Morrigan is in my list of top 3 video game chicks, so I could say that I am thrilled to know that I can have her in my pocket wherever I go! lol.
The sound is EXACTLY what I hoped for, I fell in love with some of the music in Darkstalkers 3 for the PS1, but I´m somewhat dissapointed that the music in the credits of the original DS3 were left out. Each music clip suits the stages very well, and all of the characters have their own background music carefuly composed to fit their personalities. The sound quality is a lot better when you play this game with headphones.
The controls were my only dissapointment with this game that is almost perfect for any 2D fighting game fan. Doing a fireball motion can give you a sore thumb after defeating about 3 of 4 characters. The D-Pad on the PSP is kinda stiff with this game, and if you could be able to use the PSP´s analog stick with this game, then it wouldn´t be an issue. I´ve always thought that an analog stick and fighting games go hand in hand. Everything else is pretty much Ok, I love pulling off chain combos that go up to 7 or 8 hits with ordinary kicks and punches. Practicing your combos in practice mode is quite possibly one of the most entertaining features in this game.
The loading times could´ve been a bit faster, but you get used to it after a while.
The Chronicle feature will bring tears of joy to anyone who has played the original games. You not only get to see some kickass illustrations in the extras, but as you progress in Tower mode, you´ll gain access to the original intros and endings of every Darkstalkers game so far, and watching the ending of your favorite character over and over again without having to complete the game is just too damn sweet!
But seriously, if you played this game, and you didn´t like it very much, don´t trash it, trade it, blow it up, whatever, because it´s these kinds of games that you´ll miss when you don´t play them after a while.
I would´ve rated this game a 95, but the controls are a problem. This isn´t a perfect game, but Darkstalkers has been one of my favorites for about a decade, so it has a special place in my heart. :-)

I always liked Fighting Games and so I bought this game after reading some reviews
It's a game that is very disappointing. I expected a nice game for some fighting action but got an ugly low-tech game not honoring the PSP power. This isn't even a fun game.
It is extremly simple - first try and won every fight. Just kicking and punching - most fights won in a couple of seconds. Had about an hour of testing before I put the UMD back to the case.
I expected arcade but not this kind of. Simple, bad looking, bad sound, bad gameplay.
Graphics - 40
Graphics look bad. There is more one could do on a PSP. Effects are unspectacular, animation is bad, no smooth movements, all very very disappointing.
Laoding TImes- 85
Loading times are acceptable short. One has to wait some seconds but it is OK.
Multiplayer
Not tested. The game is too bad to recommend it to friends for multiplayer matches - would be another 45 EUR for nothing but crap.
Sound FX and Music - 40
Bad sound, bad music. On one hand not my taste on the other hand nothing that one would expect from a PSP game.
Replay - 00
I will try to return the game and grab another, modern godd looking, great playing, and nice sounding game. Any other will be better than this.
Overall - 10
Bad bad bad.

I am a massive fan of the Vampire Saviour/Darkstalkers series so this was going to be a major game for me to own and be proud to own. I thought wrong.
With this being the only fighter I have owned on the PSP I was new to the 'fighting game PSP controls'.
I brought the game and stuck it in my PSP. Sexy intro comes on and im very excited. Get into the main settings and it has everything a VS/DS fan could want really. The graphics are great the speed is great the characters look very sleak on the small PSP screen. The option to choose 3/4 different DS types is also very cool.
From all of that you can't really go wrong. Until you start playing.
I chose my character and started the game. I walked up to my opponent and just tested a few combo chains to see how fast it reacted (LP, LP, MK, HK). Its pretty sweet so far. I try a crossover combo (jumping forward - diagonal up/right) but for some reason my character would either move forward or just jump. I thought that was because I was too excited at first but then kept trying it, and out of 10 times I managed to do a diagonal up/right jump 2 times out of 10 and in a 2D fighting game thats totally unacceptable. This happens for every diagonal and for one major diagonal in particular the crouching block diagonal. If this direction cannot be pushed then you are unable to block crouching moves like crouching Hight Kick.
With this I thought oh well I will just use the analogue then. Does not allow you to use analogue? I went into options, Controls and everything but there is no way to choose the analogue to move. I thought it might have been my PSP so I tried it on 3 of my friends. The exact same thing happened.
This game was a major let down and will be to any 2D fighting game fan but for someone who does'nt know what they are doing it will be a laugh. Lets just hope they allow you to use the analogue in future fighting games.

Darkstalkers Chronicle by Capcom is a great fighting game. They should have done full 3d instead of using 2d (gameboy advance style) graphics. It's a fun game (if you feel like beating the crap out of someone on the go) but gets boring after a while. When you first load the game it takes a while but runs smoothly after that.
Overall it's an awesome game. I'd give it a 8.5 out of 10, the only setback is graphics. So what are you waiting for, go buy it and kick some butt.

This game was really good. It is actually three games in one.

This is the kinda game you can pick up and play. You learn as you go along. There are a ton of chars to pick from and all have different fighting styles from fast to powerful it's all there. All the kool moves are almost too hard to do but thank the makers for Easy this will help you pull off crazy moves in 1 sec that would take you days to learn. And there are alll the moves from all the other games from Darkstalkers.
The graphics are kool but nothing new. The action never lags down
in fighting, but I've never played this in multi so I can't tell you how much it would there. The comic-like feel works very well too.
The sound is all there. Even a sound player where you can hear all the sounds from the game, which seems a little much to me.
Now the fall from a Killer game The one thing Sony will always haves till the end of time -- Load times. Now while these are long you kinda get used to them but sometimes the load times are longer than the fight which really sucks. At other times your glad for a break form the blood shed.
But looking back at this game from all the other newer games these load times seem OK now unlike *Cough* Midnight Club *Cough* *Cough* Untold Legends *Cought*.
If you're looking for a fast paced game go check this out out. =D

Darkstalkers Chronicle is Capcom's first shoot at the PSP platform. The game manages to stay true to the series and ports well to the PSP. There are tons of unlockable movies and pics to collect through the limited modes of play, and the multiplayer holds up well for that quick one on one battle. But at the end it's only good for those quick fixes. You can't really play it for a long time without wanting to turn it off. Although descent, it's nothing more then a fighting game with a large limit. It's only for the hardcore fan of the series.

To get us started, I'm a huge fan of Street Fighter II and Street Fighter III. I absolutely love them. So, I was browsing Gamestop's used section today and saw this beauty. I wasn't expecting much, but boy, did it blow my mind. Here's my review of Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower.
Darkstalkers is a 2-D fighting game by Capcom. As such, you will not see any flashy CG effects. Rather, it looks like a painted canvas. Very crisp, very orginal, very anime-like. It's beautiful. The backgrounds are mostly generic, but the character art is outstanding. Capcom really brought a group of diverse characters to live. The animation is fluid and never skips a frame, either, even during the chaotic super moves. Also, there is a tad of bouncing breasts physics, as well. At least Felicia does, anyway.
Pros: Excellent character animation and art. Fluid movement and extremely fast framerate.
Cons: Generic backgrounds.
Capcom's fighting series are known for their impressive musical scores and sound effects. Darkstalkers is no different. The music is mostly Castlevania type music with a bit of modern pop and mild rock thrown in. Quite a unique combo. The sound effects, especially the character voices, are very well done. Note, the females have extremely high pitched voices.
Pros: Excellent musical score, impressive audio effects.
Cons: Female's voices are far too high-pitched.
Here is where Darkstalkers: Chaos Tower really shines. There are several different game modes for you to thrust your fighting rage into.
Arcade: We all know it, and we all love it. Beating up character's repeatedly never get's old.
Network: Use Ad-Hoc to battle your friends! Haven't tried it, though.
Chaos Tower: The newest and best addition to the game is the Chaos Tower. Here, you will unlock most of the art collection and such. Basically, you pick 3 characters and advance throught "stages" that often have set requirements that you must obey. Very difficult at points, but very engrossing and fun.
Chronicle: View movies, listen to audio, and look at your unlocked illustrations here.
Training: Practice makes perfect, no?
The enemy AI is actually somewhat beatable (unlike the inhuman AI in Street Fighter II) although they aren't slouches. They will eat you alive if you mash buttons.
Pros: Wide assortment of game modes to keep you busy. AI isn't cheap (for the most part).
Cons: Nothing really new. Just Street Fighter II on crack, and I do mean that literally.
Here is where the game suffers a bit. First off, I'd switch from normal mode to easy mode. Normal mode controls (the arcade controls) require all 6 buttons on the PSP, and the combos are annoyingly difficult to pull off for the simple reason that the d-pad on the PSP isn't made for "fire-ball" moves. In normal mode, just about all of the character's moves require sliding of the d-pad. It's almost impossible to get it to work right.
Easy mode fixes most of the problems. It takes away M-K and M-P from the lists. You simply have H-K, H-P, L-K, and L-P, meaning you only use the face buttons. Also, many of the sliding moves have been changed to simply pressing right or left on the pad and a button, making it much easier to pull off moves. Trust me, do yourself a favor and switch to Easy mode.
Pros: Easy to learn combos.
Cons: Normal controls are annoying. Fire-ball type moves are almost impossible to pull off in this mode, and slide moves (sliding your thumb over two directional points quickly, like Sagat's Tiger Uppercut in Street Fighter II) are also basically impossible. Switching to Easy mode helps greatly.
Load times aren't long. They're just short enough to make you not get aggravated, and the load times allow you to stretch your fingers quickly.
This is a great 2-D fighting title. There are better 2-D fighters (Street Fighter III and King of Fighters 2003) but this one definately comes close. Excellent game, totally recommend it even for casual fighting game fans.

The entire Playstation hardware lineage seems to share a common flaw: 2D fighters take FOREVER to load, for reasons I still cannot fathom.
And because of this wierd quirk, Darkstalkers is kept from being the uber-2D fighter that it should have been. Basically all three Darkstalkers games in one (only one of which I KNOW was released in the States), the quirky fighters and goofy moves are more kin to the Guilty Gear fighting series than Capcom's own Street Fighter or SNK's King of Figters (ie - comical moves and goofy characters). If you played SNK's Gal's Fighters on the Neo Geo Pocket Color or Sammy's Guilty Gear series (on the PS2, GBA, Xbox, and SwanCrystal) and enjoyed them, then you'd probably know and like this game from the get go.
Or you would, had it not been for the two killers of the game. Despite the great graphics, great characters, unlockable movies and images, the tower mode, and potential multiplayer, the game is awful for two reasons:
Controls and load times.
In the time it takes to load the first fight, I could have already had a round of Lumines's single player going, and for all the loading needed for a best of three fight, I speed through the fight and have to sit through yet another load time that seems to take longer than the fight. I know it doesn't, but the load times take away the exitement of the combat.
Controls are probably the same blunder that Rengoku faced (read my reviews on GameFAQs to see my views), but to sum it up, any game that requires quick-reflexes and rotations of the control stick needs to be able to perform a given move without problems. Unfortunately, simply TRYING to do the traditional Capcom Fireball rotation (if you are reading this, you better know what that is) is near impossible, never mind the complex moves needed to do some of the super moves. This game (as well as Rengoku) seem to indicate that the PSP's D-stick is unable to handle these types of controls as well as a more traditional D-pad (ie - the GBA/DS).
A great game, but when the core of the game (controls) becomes a task of impossibility, might as well give up. Spend your cash on something fun. Darkstalkers is great in concept, but in exectution, it just isn't fun.

Plain and simple, if you have a PSP and you want to satisfy your 2D fighting fix on the go, this game is for you.
I believe this is a port of a Japanese Dreamcast compilation of the 3 Darkstalkers fighting games, and as far as I can tell, it's perfect. The fighting is fast and intense, challenging you to perfect your movements as you play. For those of you worried that the 6 button controls don't translate well on the PSP, fear not! The PSP's pad works very well (after you get used to it) and the game even has an Easy control scheme to aid you that can't get used to the PSP controls or simply just want to make the game easier.
The graphics are bright and vibrant. The game features extremely well-animated characters which light up the screen with movements that'll have you wondering if you're really playing a game on a portable console.
I haven't had a chance to test out the AdHoc features for it yet, but the setup seems super simple. P1 sets all of the settings, and anyone that wants to fight can simply log in to "The Arena" and you will see a list of people around you that you can fight.
My one issue with the game is the loading time. I think it could simply be due to the fact that everyone is pretty new to the hardware, so they haven't been able to optimize the loading times yet. It's not TOO long of a wait, but you do get a little bored waiting for the next match to start.
With character endings (multiple ones for some people), hidden characters, character art, AdHoc support, the Arcade Mode, the Tower Mode, you'll be playing for a long time. If you're not a fan of the series, this game will definitely make you a believer. It's the only available option for fighting game addicts right now, but it definitely doesn't win by default. The game is packed with great features and unlockables, coupled with a honed fighting system (that is made easier with the alternate control scheme) that caters to diehards and passersby. If anything, this shows the PSP's capability to process 2D graphics for the future.

Really good game. perfect game if you feel like kicking someone's or somethings ass on the long freakin road trip or plane ride

I played a very similar game on the Dreamcast and it was virtually unchanged. I thought the worst part is that the game isn't even reformatted for the PSP's widescreen format, it is simply stretched from the original 4/3 format which is UNCCACCEPTABLE for a $40 game. Though a 2d fighter can be fun but alot of the ejoyment comes from playing with friends and since your chances of running into someone with the game are slim its a no go for me and i resold it.

This game is actually three games. All three versions of Darkstalkers are in this game. This game looks like a direct port from a PS2 game. Controls are responsive and quick. The only negative I have is loading time. However because of the outstanding graphics and sound, I can be patient.
