In some ways, the PSP rendering of Metal Gear Acid is actually not as different as some may have you believe. The main characteristics of stealth and strategy are still key and present. The new 'card' style gameplay which sounds kiddy, is actually quite rich and makes for a better portable gaming experience than a purely action/stealth version of Metal Gear would.

I'd have to say, I made a big, big rookie mistake when I bought MGACID. Normally, before I buy games (or basically anything) I look everywhere for reviews and screenshots and whatnot to help me make a decision on whether or not I should buy the game. I bought Acid with the purchase of my PSP because I figured, "AWESOME! A METAL GEAR FOR PSP!!" Well, this game is NOT like other Metal Gear games. I REPEAT, THIS GAME IS NOT LIKE OTHER METAL GEAR GAMES.
I honestly cannot play this game any longer than 20 minutes because I get tired of how tedious and boring it is. This game plays like a chess game inspired by a trading card game like Magic in the sense that you are dealt certain cards and those cards give you the ability to move different amounts of steps. Alot like different pieces in chess give you different moveability options. Also, you have the choice of using the card in order to redeem certain weapon uses, disguises, armor, etc.
After your turn, you get to watch each gaurd or enemy use his turn. The whole thing just seemed to go on way too long for me. Also, I hate chess. I'm kind of pissed that I bought this game.

Let me just start by saying, this is a very enjoyable game. It's a Metal Gear Gaiden. It starts out the same way that ghost babel does, telling you that Snake is a retired mercenary and such.
The graphics are great. Models are on par with, if not better than, any PS2 game. Very reminiscent of MGS2, really. The frame rate is very smooth and solid, but gets a bit choppy when there are many enemies on screen. The new, darker feel of the artwork is very appropriate for the music. The mood is simply in sync.
The gameplay is pretty solid. Most of the actions available in the MGS games are available in this game, through a more basic and turn-based system. Some elements were taken out of hte game that were in the MGS series, however. Such as choking enemies, hiding bodies, making others surrender, gadgets(listener, radar, etc.) For action gamers, though, the gameplay may be found boring and frustrating because of the focus on strategy on a larger emphasis on stealth.
The game's sound is probably the only flawless thing in it. The sound effects are on par with MEtal Gear Solid and the music is BETTER! The Holiwood feel of the audio simply fits. The alert music makes my heart jump and the normal environment music gives of an aroma of mystery and eerieness.
The overall verdict of MGA is, GOOD BUT NOT GREAT. The gameplay is not focused towards all tastes of gameplay and is very controlled and limited. Once a turn is made, there's no taking it back. STRICTLY for those who read, and have a high mental capacity.

I have played every Metal Gear game since the MSX titles and I love the series. This game is a break-off from the series, but not in a bad way. This game has great graphics, and the turn-based strategy is fun. The gameplay can get repetative and boring after a while, but it is still worth a buy. The sound is great for the mood of the game. There are also lots of cards to collect. There are also some hidden Japanese model cards (if you can find the codes!). Overall, I recommend this game if you are a hardcore Metal Gear fan.

Older games are better.

I only bought this game for the infrastructre they displayed on the box in the bottom. Lies! This game is ok, but it lied to me. Anyways, this is a slowpaced RPG-like game. Also, there are cards invovled. I'm going to trade this in too. God, disapontment sucks.

This game stars Snake but he looks pretty old and weak but he is not he still got some fight in him. The story is about Snake on another covert mission (don't you just imagine a game when Snake actually doesn't get a mission and a game just like Harvest Moon but with snake) He is to save some girl named Teliko and stop Metal Gear again.
Gameplay
This game is a Turn Based game and it incorperates cards and some people like fast pased normal metal gear action but I still like this game pretty much it might not be the best game but it still fun to past the time
Replay Value
I usually dont replay this game because I just get bored and buy another game but it still pretty collecting other cards but I dont see the point in that but some people might but there is an Extreme mode of difficulty after you beat the game but its just harder and more enemies.
Load Times
The load times on this game is fast out of my four games this is APPROXIMITLEY faster
Graphics
The graphics for this game is amazing its better then GTA but if the gameplay was as good as the graphics I would kill for the game but sadly its not. while playing the game you can have some time to admire the graphics because its turn based
Sound
the sound for this game is not that bad because they have interesting music while in combat and when you equip a card the make this cool sound like a gun reloading
Diffilculty
This game isn't that difficult I think anybody could finish this game in about two weeks and with the exception of Extreme mode the game gets much harder but not more fun
Overall
This game is pretty good but if your planning on saving money for a worth wild game that will keep you busy then I wouldn't recommend this game but this game is good for hardcore metal gear solid fans and this game is also a quick pick up and play game when your at your lunch break or waiting for the dentists

Don't waste your money, I think it ruined Metal Gear.

I am a really hardcore metal gear fan. I thought Acid would be a good asset to the PSP, but it isn't. It has a good story but I did not like the gameplay at all. This is suppose to be a stealth espionage game. I played this game for about 1 hour to hour and a half and was disgusted. If Konami stuck with the regular gameplay I would be satisfied. I am so dissapointed with this game and I can't believe they are making a MG Acid 2. If they do please not another card game.

I just completed this game, my opinion is mixed. On one hand, the game has all the twisted characters who are clones, babies who did not get enough love and goverment spies that Metal Gear is known for. The plot had me guessing a couple of times and kept me playing. Artwork was fantastic and the fact it looks like a mix between MGS1 and MSG2 is fantastic. On the other hand its cards. Why cards we will never know but the most boring thing is shuffling your deck looking for the right card. A game where you are outnumbered most of the time being able to us the right gun should be there. I wish this game had a more X-Com / Final Fantasy Tactics feel. That would have been perfect.

The graphics in Metal Gear Acid are rather impressive for the Sony PSP. While newer games may take fuller advantage of the PSP's GPU rendering power, Metal Gear Acid is a release title and should be given special consideration as such. In-game graphics are good - sprites are well-rendered and textures are acceptable. Of course angles look jagged as a result of no Anti-Aliasing, but this is expected of all PSP games.
What surprised me was seeing points in which the game ran slowly. It seemed to me as if Konami didn't take the time to completely optimize graphics performance given the PSP's limitations. This is most evident when several characters are rendered on-screen at the same time and a sprite (grenade explosion) plays at the same time.
While the graphics are not perfect, the faults do not detract from gameplay.
I'm sure everyone has played a card game on a handheld at one point or another, be it Pokémon or, well, that's all I can think of right now. Metal Gear Acid requires strategy in order to win. Gameplay starts off slow to aid gamers in learning the basics. While this may be helpful, it is an annoyance at times when you just want to get through a quick game. Unlike other Metal Gear games, Acid is a turn-based card game and is best played when you've got time to burn. In order to enjoy the game, you have to sit down and take your time.
Obtaining new cards for your deck can be accomplished by either finding Metal Gear Solid (MGS) packs while on missions or by spending points in the Card Shop. Points are earned for successfully completing missions and bonus points are awarded for "Speedy" completion or complete stealth. Deck building is made easy through the game's .
Each mission begins with a cutscene and dialog outlining the mission objectives. Objectives are generally straightforward and clearly marked, although they do change in the middle of missions when Snake runs into complications. This leaves you with a sinking feeling every time you think you've completed a mission but really haven't
The bad thing about gameplay in Metal Gear Acid - camera angles. The game is plagued with camera angle problems. Sometimes you won't be able to see an enemy because a wall is directly in your way. While the game does allow you to change angles by pressing the Left and Right shoulder buttons, you can't keep a zoomed in view. There aren't view settings to toggle between when controlling Snake. The analog stick does help remedy angle problems at time because it gives you control to focus the camera on a general direction.
Another problem - you can't skip those damn cutscenes! They are all over the place, yet you can't skip them with a click of the button. I'd like to be able to save in the middle of a cutscene so I can get back to it later, but I really don't like being forced to read through them. Very little text is displayed on the screen at a time so you have to keep the text moving by tapping "O".
If you can't stand card games, you probably won't be able to stomach Metal Gear Acid.
The soundtrack is rather limited but at least it sounds good. Music changes based on what's happening in-game. If you've been detected, it becomes faster in tempo until you manage to get Snake back into hiding. Metal Gear Acid needs what every other PSP game needs - user customizable soundtracks. Unfortunately, it doesn't have that so you'll just have to do with the music that's already there.
Very easy to navigate through game menus. Options are straightforward and simple to understand. It would be nice if you could simply skip through the cutscenes with a click of a button. Metal Gear Acid gives the user no control over button mappings so you'll have to stick with what's been assigned.
A nice feature with Metal Gear Acid is the save files - they show how much time has been spent ingame and what mission the player is on. Handy dandy.
Metal Gear Acid is a great game if you have time to spend and if you enjoy thinking while you play The price should fall soon as Konami will be releasing a reissue. Do give Metal Gear Acid a try at the very least. Bear in mind that it is a PSP launch title and there are some problems in gameplay. Hopefully these issues will be resolved in Metal Gear Acid 2. No feature to skip cutscenes and dialog make this game a drag at times, but Metal Gear Acid is a great game for long trips.
I recommend Metal Gear Acid to anyone looking for a fun yet challenging game.

Many MGS fans are skeptical about this game but as one myself, I really enjoyed Metal Gear Acid. It adds a new twist to the sieres.
Amazing graphics! Unparalelled on any other handheld game I have ever seen! No slowdown. Very fun and innovative gameplay. If fans of MGS loved thinking about what to do next, to shoot the enemy or sneak past its defences, they will love this. Great sound quality and catchy music. Same style from MGS sieres. Can get a bit repetative. Pick this game up!

I bought this game despite the mixed reviews. I heard a lot of complaints about a "card based" Metal Gear. But when I think about it, Metal Gear Solid also had "cards" in terms of the items that you can have at any given moment. What really seperates this version from other MGs is the fact that MGA is a turn-based strategy game. Add in a great Snake tale and I will go further and say that MGA is the PSP "other" launch RPG.
The graphics are excellent, on par with MGS2 on the PS2. The story is very good. I found very compelling and deep. I like the fact that the gameplay is turn based. I like having time to set up my strategy before ending a turn. I also love that fact that you can save at any point in the game.
The further you get into the game the more the story evolves. With all the plot twists and betrayals of an episode of 24.
I do think that Konami could have done a lot better job of how to use the 'equip' type weapons. I have friends that went halfway through the game only using the 'use' type weapons. Weapon/Inventory mangement is a crucial part of winning the game.

I've played all the Metal Gear series simulatneously, and even when I knew the new Metal Gear was coming out I'd play all of them again just to catch up on the story, so you can tell I'm a loyal Metal Gear fan! But, this Pokemon ripoff is such a letdown to the M.G. franchise it's unbelivable! The graphics are nothing less than what you woul expect but the gameplay is lacking. Some of us are not 7 and we don't play Pokemon games. The card system is a bit whack. But then the Metal Gear magic will capture you again, but it takes awhile to get used to the game with the cards but it's really not that bad. For those that don't know what I'm talking about and want to buy this game, read this part carefully -- the card system is all about restricted movement and careful planning. You use cards to control Snake and his arsenal but you have to have a bit of patience to play this. The cutscenes are a bit long winded and they really need to get to the point quicker. All in all it's not too bad, but they no longer have the characters talking so alot of reading is involved. MGS fans play this and stay loyal to the series, and those of you who are new, play this because it will have you wanting more by the end, I promise!
Overall, this is a quality game but it takes a bit of getting used to so be patient with it and ull have hours of fun. I'm going to have to deduct marks for the card system but after that it's all good!
90
I've beaten it in every mode and not very bored of it. The graphics are terrific, the unique card based gameplay sucks you in after an hour. I'd recommend this game to anyone looking for a nice long game or just anyone in general.
65
Bottom line: I am glad to have taken a look at it but did not enjoy the game.
Gameplay: Intriguing but yawn - 50
I picked this up for a month to see if it actually was a good title as I had heard some good things. It is intriguing that it is a card-based FPS but as I came to difficult parts my interest began to wane.
The play model of having everything seperated in blocks was cumbersome and felt like I was playing an early 90s game before there was enough processing power for full 3d. It really took the realness feeling out of the game when I had to literally stand in the block in front of a cracked wall to "realize" it was there and move foreward in my mission. Also it feels a little silly that a guard is really close but cannot see you because he is facing slightly away from you.
Also, though it is frequently the case in a FPS, facing 5 armed guards in a fairly open space the size of a volleyball court and surviving is a joke any way you spin it. Though I do not really count that heavily against the game.
Graphics: Good - 20
Must call it good. Graphics are not what I really call "impressive" like Wipeout with full motion in game video screens etc. The graphics however are presentable and solid, as it seems they are built on the time tested MGS1 engine.
Sound: Nostalgic, pretty good - 10
They give you that metal gear feel, but are not really immersive. That said they do sound like guns etc, and are decent but you could play the game without the sound on and not miss much.
Physics: Excellent - 20
The actual physics of the game engine are great, as you know if you've played MGS1. Characters move and have fluid animations etc and give a visual ambiance to the experience. Though the game is based on what looks like a very old engine, it works because it is so solid, similar to Counter Strike.
Should you buy it? Only if you like card based games, or are a devoted MG fan. Should you rent it? If you're bored like I am with the current PSP library, maybe it's worth it just to see one way a game can be made. But personally I wish I had tried another or done my homework.

Pros
Snake and no Raiden!
Card game (I'm a fan)
Con
Card game (not for everyone)
91
As this is the first Metal Gear game I have ever played, I say this game is great. Some moving problems but overall the experience is awesome.
78
Well this is the first (and so far only) game I've bought for my PSP. The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is a little, shall I say, boring. The game is good but turn based games are just a bit of a turn off to me and i've had so much trouble with the deck editor. MGA starts off boring then gets a bit better and then you're having a bit of fun with it, but then you get lazy because turn based games (to me) make EVERYTHING seem repetitive. If they made a real Metal Gear game for the PSP, I would be so happy. And what about Metal Gear Acid 2? I mean come on Konami I don't think you should risk another turn based game, it might backfire.
Overall, this game is relatively fun. There are a few good moments, but even the storyline seems diffrent for a MG game. Sure it's got bad guys and big nucler wepons but it just feels diffrent and if you think about it I don't think that there are going to be very many more good Metal Gears after #3. Even though Snake is fun, I think they're going to keep milking even after the cow dies. I think that the replay value of this game is very low. Sound is alright, but the dailouge was crappy
I do think this is a good game to own if you like the Metal Gear series.

Undoubtedly, the badly written manual, and the badly worded in-game instructions to the new features leave a lot to be desired. The best advice I can give is to look at a faq from link, learn how to play the game properly then have a ball.
This game has a great plot that's well worth seeing through to the end. Once you're over that learning curve everything is gravy. Once I got used to the annoying large type which meant I had to press the O button forever and a day to get through cutscenes, I enjoyed the story immensely. As the vast majority of cutscenes are after a mission has been completed, the game has a nice pacing with a set of rewards at the end of each mission: more cards, more points to buy packs or single cards, and more storyline.
There are some technical issues I had with the game. First was the slowdown on some of the game's camera pans and explosions. Since this isn't an action game, rendering all kinds of detail while calculating movement, button presses and effects of various actions, I felt that the slowdown showed a lack of optimization of the engine.
In terms of gameplay, when you're in control of two characters and one of them is no longer of any use to you (say they're at the end of the mission waiting on the other to catch up), it's extremely sluggish having to constantly end the useless character's turn. I would suggest allowing a free movement mode once all enemies are defeated for MGA2.
The music in the game seems a bit monotonous but it's actually paced very well. Once you're closer to the endgame, new themes appear to showcase a new level of tension.
Playability: 8
Load Times: 8
Graphics: 7
Sound: 6
Music: 8
To Summarize: If you're a Metal Gear fan that can stand to learn a tactical turn-based card game to enjoy a new story with plenty of opportunity for action, sneaking and seeing memorabilia of Metal Gears of yore, this is one to get.
86
Story - 4/5
Once again, they created a very deep story line. The presentation of it is just superb! Absolutely superb! Yes! Anyway, I'm not a fan of reading 15 minute cut scenes (even though you can fast forward it). The beeping just gets annoying after a while.
Graphics - 5/5
I'll just save your time by saying: This is just the best that the PSP can offer. the END.
Sound - 3/5
Well, it could use some work, but great work Konami!
Playability - 3/5
This is the biggest problem I had with the game, the cards. CARDS DAMN YOU, CARDS. It's kind of hard to be stealthy with cards isn't it? The gameplay is kind of slow at first, but after 30 minutes with it, you get sucked in the very deep card system. And you can fast forward the enemy's turn, so that's swell. The game can experience slow downs when there is aLOT of explosions, but it's not much of a problem, really. The online. Well, I didn't try it yet. But I bet it's good.
Overall
Beautiful but slow. The cards system is great and all, but it just puts you off.
76
After haveing this game for some time now I'm having second throghts. I just don't seem to pick this game up anymore and the story is weird. Very wierd The cards aren't an issue, it's just that the pace of the game is a little slow. Also, some of the views can make you go crazy. This game isn't easy at all.
94
I am a huge Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid fan, so as soon as I got my PSP this was the first thing I bought. Here is my review.
Graphics: I was not disappointed at all. They are very good looking, showed the PSPs' power for sure.
Sound: Of course music always sets a mood to a game and the music was good as always. Isn't as good as the other games, but still wasn't bad.
Replay: Playing the game over and over may seem repetitive but many want to go back and collect every card or put together the perfect deck for each level. And if a friend has it, it also has online.
Multiplayer: Online! Ad-Hoc only. Wow, that really sucks. But if you find anyone to play with, I bet it would be a blast =D.
Gameplay: Cards, cards, cards. Many had this thought when they revealed it would have card gameplay. Well it actually is great with the cards. If you think about it as breaking down his actions into tiny fractions of a second, then it brings a new sense to the whole thing. It allows you to take your time and be tactical and strategic with these cards. Also you can make one badass deck.
Overall: Great game, great story, Metal Gear. Pretty much that alone will hook some people. I enjoyed this very much so. Do I recommed anyone picking this up? If you don't at least rent it, you are missing out for sure. Check it, Metal Gear Acid.
70
I'm a HUGE MGS fan, and when I bought my PSP it was the first game I picked up. The graphics are awesome, and the presentation of the game is superb. Once I got used to the card thing, battles were fun but the thing that really killed this game for me was the tedium of simple movement. I can see how some people would like it, but MGS+board game doesn't make a good combination for me.
96
If you have patience and appreciation for good games, I would reccomend this game. At first I balked at a card game, but once I got into it, I was hooked. I got this game free from a friend. You should try buying it from someone cheap.
90
Finally I bought this game knowing I should have when I first got my PSP and have put a couple hours into it. First of all i'd like to say that this is a very easy game to pick up and learn, although the developers should've put more time into the tutorial in the beginning of the game.
Overall the new card system, and tactics to the game is pretty good although there are some little tweaks I wish they'd made to the A.I of the enemy so they don't act as stupid sometimes as they should. I was actually impressed by the load times, they're not all that bad compared to some other titles that have been released on the system so far. Graphics wise it was okay, like a mix between MGS1, and MGS2 quality but for a 1st generation game for the PSP it was pretty good. The sound for the game is pretty good quality. The sound effects sound just like the one from the console game, although I like the new score for the game, I wish they would've gone with the actual Metal Gear score by Harry Gregson-Williams.
Overall I say this game is a good buy, but that's my opinion because I am a huge Metal Gear fan, but also if you like strategy, and tactic games this is a good bang for your buck.
90
Thank god for a strategy/tactics type game. This game is wonderful. There are so many combos and it's very in depth.
54
All I have to say is that this game is not as good as the rest of Metal Gear Solid's. It has good graphics, but if you want a shooter game, don't get this one. It is not as good as it should be.
99
Innovative in it's own right. but i'd love for a REAL Metal Gear Solid to come out for the PSP. That would be amazing. Like a rerelease of MGS, or even Substance or Sons of Liberty would be nice.
58
At the begining this game might seem awesome but is actually a rather boring game.
The worst thing about this game is that you use a card based system to manuever, fight, and do pretty much every thing else in the game.
The only way you would like this game is if you have a lot of time on your hands, and you like REALLY slow gameplay.
The loading times are okay but there is almost no action and the AI is very stupid.
95
First, realize this game is a tactical strategy game with a card interface. Working at Gamestop, I see 90% of people returning this game not realizing that. It is an excellent tactical strategy game, though it is radically different from past Metal Gears.
Technically the game looks great, looking very nice compared to the most recent Metal Gears. Load times are barely noticeable, not detracting from gameplay in the least (even when using special cards that load movies from the past Metal Gears).
In terms of gameplay, the game is very solidly built, allowing you to move with any of your cards, making you not rely solely on 'Movement Cards'. Other cards function in a variety of ways, such as pulling out a SOCOM and firing to throwing a grenade that explodes X time later.
The game is still very stealth based, as past Metal Gears have been, but you can fight your way through some levels very easily too. Use of automatic weapons isn't nearly as penalized as it was in MGS 1/2, attracting far less attention (Never had an issue with drawing more than one guard to me when using the FAMAS automatic). Also, it's a relatively small task to kill all the guards in an area, new guards are typically only introduced when a guard sees you and calls for backup (Which only brings in one new guard).
Overall a solid tactical strategy, just know what your buying before you do.
97
This game looks awesome, for one. It also hits home with the sound and storyline seen in most Metal Gear games. The camera does get a little switchy but no big deal. The cards work seamlessly into the action and espionage.
You either love this game or you hate it. I loved it but you might not. Cards give it a unique twist which Kojima designed just for the PSP. Load times can get a little lengthy. And the beginning cut scene is like 40 minutes long. But there is a good storyline you will want to watch unfold.
95
MGA is an amazing game. I always wanted to get into Metal Gear games but never got any because I was always short on cash and spent all my work money on cd's and stuff right away. Lately all the extra cash I get is going into my PSP. I got Metal Gear Acid last week and I love it now.
It took a while for me to get the hang of it. It really does help if you read the manual, which I know almost no one does. It is a beautiful game with excellent graphics, a gripping story, and fun for anyone that likes strategy games. The card system takes a little time to figure out, but when you do, you'll have more fun.
90
Its a new concept, a bit slower to get into, but well worth it when you do! Great art, story! I had the same feeling when I played Final Fantasy Tactics the first time: new concept in playing, set the genre, fun and invovled!!
65
It not what I thought I was buying. I was expecting a good third person shooter insted I found a turned based strategy card game. The graphics to me are great but as far as gamplay, its not my thing. Racing, sports, or shooter tittle, now those are my kind of games. I should've paid more attention to the cover. I wanted some hardcore instant action. But for those who like card games this is it!
90
I'm having fun with this game. Although I would have prefered the stealth approach, this is a new experience. I initially started this with very little expectations, perhaps thats the reason why I like this game so much.
85
Good idea creating a new Metal Gear world, but execution missed a little. Two-Player is ok and card system works well, but wheres my chokehold?
73
I've played the Metal Gear on PS2, I was very happy to know that PSP has Metal Gear, but after I bought it... I was extremely disappointed. What? A card game? I was expecting it to be a third person shooting.
70
This is pretty cool, but I have the JAP version, so the whole story is unknown to me. Graphics are cool though
85
Terrorists have Hijacked Flight 396. They threaten the passengers lives unless a disk containing the "Pythagoras" data is given to them. They have a Presidential Candidate aboard. Who can infiltrate a South African island, get Pythagoras and save them while enduring immense plot twists and hair-raising betrayals? Who else but the Legendary retired Fox-Hound member Solid Snake. From the creative mind of Shinta Nojiri (not Kojima in disguise) Metal Gear Ac!d uses a turned-based battle system (Active Command Intelligence Duel...damn.) and decks of cards to pit Solid Snake (and later a partner) against Guards, Robots, and massive Bosses.
This is a METAL GEAR game people, the story starts out generic. Terrorist take place, you kill them silently, blah-de-blah. But the plot twists are IMMENSE and kept me on the edge of my seat like no portable EVER has (except Fire Emblem). I won't spoil the whole story, but it involves a man you meet named Gary, and another man, Hans Davis, creating a psychic powered kid (wait til' you find out who that is!). I could go more into detail, but no spoilers here folks.
Gameplay Score: 9
I'll explain the basics of the card battle system, which can be VERY connfusing. There are several card types; Character, Weapon, Item, CQC, Action, Support. Character cards are the most varied and do MANY things, from attacking your opponent half a map away or healing you constantly. Weapons... duh. There are two types, 'Equip' and 'Use'. 'Equips' must be equipped and loaded with ammo (Another gun-card of the same Cal/mm/guage). 'Use' guns are fired and discarded. Items are varied, from Cardboard boxes (hiding) to nightvision. CQC cards allow for the MGS3 close-quarters-combat techniques to be used. Action cards are 'Special', and Support cards increase your health, mainly. It has a sharp learning curve but it's enjoyable when you own a guy using a CQC strangle card while passing under a camera.
Score: 8 (Sound & Graphics)
Yeah, you've seen TGC graphics before, cartoon-like. Annoying? Not here. This game is gorgeous on the 4.3in screen. The color-use is spectacular, theres a massive variety to be found here and I was amazed at the Game Room (a story element later) which had rainbows everywhere. I had a few issues with black specs (not my PSP mind you) showing up and the jungle effects were less then great. The music in the game, as with all MG games, is nice. The gun sound effects are true to the soure (hey CS fans, theres a FAMAS). The dialogue, although iffy itself at times is very well done.
Most of the characters in this game must think Snake has ADD, because throughout the entire game they repeat his main objective every friggin' level and it gets annoying. So skip the cutscenes with your commander in them. The Boss fights? Rather uneventful, the first pitting you against a massive guy (Leone) with a massive gun. A few grenades next to explosive barrels and you win. Metal Gear on the other hand...ouch.
If you like Metal Gear and have any interest in TCGs (Trading Card Games) pick this up NOW! If you hate every card on the planet and want to burn them? Rent it if possiable, then buy it. Overall I loved this game, but the replay value is almost 0 (opinions may vary). It does have nice multiplayer which is fun as hell on Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure, but I had some bad load times while on IF mode.

I love this game! The cards dont make it anymore different. I feel it works well, and being able to save any time helps alot and it will play for up to 6 hour so yeah!

I love strategy games, most people who play Metal Gear Solid enjoy them, but dont love them. If you are one of the people who enjoys turn based games where you are thinking about three or four moves in front of you, like a more open ended chess, go for it. If you like older RPG's where they were all block-move turnbased games, you will like it. If you like shooting a bunch of people in MGS games, dont waste the money. I loved it, most wont, but it is worth a try.
The plot is eerie and very dark. I was suprised at how evil the characters were, and how sinister they were, very definintly a game to be bundled with the upcoming SAW release on UMD on June 25th.
Check it out, have fun.

Ok, I haven't even gotten near the end (so I believe) but, I have to say that MGA is just about the same as other MGS titles but with the slow addition of card management.
The card options can really save your ass but, I find that they make me not want to do strategic thinking because I can get cards to 'battle' my way out of most situations. That simply isn't an option for much of the other MGS games. MGA makes you really concerned about the cards and kinda less interested in the stealth.
Perhaps, there was a reason they took out the solid part.. 'cause it's definitely not as solid as other titles. The PS2 ones are better and faster and make you think ahead far more. Maybe MGA2 will be better.

Metal Gear Acid is the best PSP game yet. I will recommend it to anybody. The game is a card based game, but dont let this decieve you, I promise you will enjoy the game.

This game is so cool. I am a die hard Metal Gear fan. This game is almost like a recollection of all the metal gears up to this point. It is a lot of fun.

Right after buying this game, I was incredibly excited to play it. "Awesome! Another Metal Gear! On a new system, too!" After popping in the UMD, and seeing the mostly boring and drawn-out opening sequence, I realised that not a lot of work went into creating the between-the-action scenes. The opening sequence went on and on, and I would sit there, skimming through the text, no longer caring about the story but excited about getting into the action.
You learn most of the basics in the first mission, which is also a tutorial. Metal Gear games have always been great about incorporating the tutorial into the game, rather than making you read pages and pages of information. Though the game explains the basics to you, and they are mostly easy to grasp, it never really explains much of anything else, like Cost, which isn't very well-explained in the manual, either.
In terms of graphics, this game does well to show off how detailed characters can get. I think the biggest show is Snake's facial hair, it looks great and extremely detailed. You could probably count each hair, as you can see them plainly. Loading times throughout the game aren’t terrible, though I’m sort of a patient person, so I wouldn’t know if they’re completely horrible. Sometimes, though, in certain scenes of extreme action and there happen to be a lot of characters (or a huge one) on-screen, the game’s frame rate can drop drastically, though this never happens while you’re actually planning or doing anything.
I’d say the cards are a great way of playing this game, though in the beginning they take a lot of getting used to. It didn’t take me very long to get hooked, and once I was, I didn’t put game down for long periods, and would often miss class for it. Using the cards effectively would probably take the average player about half-way through the game. I’d say this would turn off a lot of people about the game, but I’d also say that it’s worth the time learning, as this game is almost as addictive as Lumines, though Lumines doesn’t take nearly as long to get addicted to.
Overall, I give this game a score of 88 because of all the shortcomings, although they take time to get used to. Things like a lack of explaining the intricacies of the game better, poor cut scenes, and a not-so-great story. If you’re a Metal Gear fan, and you’re willing to venture into Konami’s try at something totally different, buy this game, it’s worth owning if you’re hardcore enough. If you’re bored with the games you have now, and want something you can just pick up and play, go twiddle your thumbs or something. This isn’t for you.

The only problem take is it will take you at least 4 hours to learn the system and great enough cards to have fun. The story is excellent as always. And playing against a friend is a blast.

Initially I liked this game, rented it once, played it a little and enjoyed it. However I really didnt play much more than an hour or two of scattered play.
I decided to have another play at it, and spent a good few hours, and found this game to be something I have been looking for! Card games havent really appealed to me before - I had played some Pokemon and a few other bits and pieces, and I couldnt really see the fascination. With MGA it was when I started seeing movies and characters from the original series that got me interested, then as you unlock more and more packs you get more and more advanced cards, with some great attached 'little flashbacks' to characters, events and such that have happened in the series. To me this gives the game a real sense of depth. And finding some of the 'more special' cards is really rewarding.
On top of this the gameplay is excellent. I enjoyed it the first time I played it, but as the story of the game unfolds and how Snake becomes involved, and the missions increase in difficulty, it gets very intense. You really have to be wary how you use the cards and how to fill a deck out. I realise when I first played the game, I made some pretty critical errors in using the deck - I thought filling up with offensive weapons is the best :-) .. however thats just a no-no :-) And I threw away the '-4' cards thinking they were useless and wasted a precious turn.. woops again. The next time round I played this.. it was obvious that a balanced deck was critical - especially in some of the later missions.
This game is for me, quite a surprise. Since initially I thought it a good game, and would have rated it 75 and maybe a little more. Now, that I have really spent some decent time with it, its even much better than I originally thought :-) The graphics are brilliant.. the sotry is excellent.. and the gameplay.. its just great for someone whom has been looking for a decent strategy style game on console! but its portable even!. If you have played this and given up on it or just didnt think it overly fun, I recommend a thorough 'go' at this game.. it really is worth the effort. And if you are any sort of Metal Gear fan.. you just have to get this game.. its top notch.
Good
Graphics, gameplay, sound, story..
Bad
There are a couple of little quirky things like the camera getting obscured every now and then, and some of the interface gear can get a bit annoying.. so minor though..

At first, I didn't have any intensions of buying this game because it was a card/stealth game, even though I like the Metal Gear series. That was until my bro bought it. Then I realized that it was actually pretty good, in fact it is really good!
No spoilers here, just basic stuff. Like I said, this is a card/stealth game based on the popular series of Metal Gear Solid. The story unfolds after a plane has been hijacked by a group of terrorist and they bring Snake back from retirement in Alaska. Along the mission you will encounter new characters and bosses, along with well-known weapons.
I have to say, I’m very impressed with the graphics. They almost resemble the PS2's look and feel. The explosions, special effects and character models are very well done showing eyes, lips and even hair.
I just started to play this game, and I think that the gameplay is easy to get the hang of.

I read a few reviews, and waited 2 weeks before deciding to try the game. So you can say I was a little skeptical about the direction Konami went with the series. I must say they did a great job.
The graphics in this game are post PS1 and almost as good as MGS 2 & 3. I've played the hell out of the psone and pstwo offerings and completed the games a few times over. The graphics are on par with the PS2 games. I expect the next PSP MGA game (hopefull, eh?) to surpass the graphics of this one.
The sound in this game it top notch. I've played RR and they booth get the same ratings as far as i'm concerned. Its pretty much the same as all the other Metal Gear games. For some reason I find it much more relaxing now, playing on the bus to work(two things I never thought would happen). The only thing missing, and I mean the only thing missing, is the voice acting behind cut scenes and mission briefings.
I love this style of play personally. People have compared this game to Final Fantasy Tactics for GBA, but I disagree. I used to play FFT, never got far, but this game blows it away. I'm talking hurricane force winds here. First of all, movement feels alot like playing the Solid series. Actually, i'm sure that after playing this game, you start to realize how, in-efficient, and un-strategic you've been with you approach to the mission in Solid. You may even play solid better. Its tempting to run up on guards hurling grenades and empting your SOCOM in his chest in solid because its real time action, and thats what we like. The way this game plays it forces you to think ahead, considering all the elements of the battlefield. You have to take into consideration; Distance and Destination. BATs (Bag of tricks) as I call it, basically the cards you have when its your turn to play. Enemy(s) location, and patrol route. Terrain, timing you name it. Read "The Art of War" for more details..lol. Trust me when I say, if you like MGS and your prefer strategy instead of mindless killing, this is the game for you.
Some people have complained about a variety of things in the reviews on all the ign's and gamepro websites out there, but I don't really find any validity behind them. Saving progress is simple, the interface on a whole is very well done. Again the only thing I miss (not that much though) is the voice acting during the conversations and mission briefings. Not a big deal though, because you move at your own pace. Its easy to miss something if the cutscene is the only time you get a break, and want to grab a drink, bleed the fat lizard, or look out the bus window at a very sexy lady walking down the street (or so i've heard). Also, Metal Gear is notorious for the "Drama" effect of the acting. I'd hate to have to watch those friggin dolls dance around saying some dumb ish, its easier and faster to read the dialog and imagine how annoying they must sound.
Anyways, the game is top notch. I'm a happy customer and not afraid to say it. This game rocks baby!!! If you've never played or ever heard of a Steath/Action/Strategy/Card Game, this is it. Don't think of the card as Aces and Jacks, think of them as the options you have in a given situation, and make them work to your benefit. For a first generation game, I give this a 90%, but for it to be a first gen portable game, I added an extra 5 to the tally. Gimme my sound back, and add first person view, and this game is up there with Snake Eater...my all time fav, after God Of War.

Don't hate me, but I've tried many times to get into this game. I'm a HUGE Metal Gear fan and have played them all. Unfortunately, this is probably the one where I will have to move on. The card based play is something I'm just not familiar with and can't seem to grasp. The "tutorial" at the beginning of the game doesn't seem to help me understand the concept any better. And there is no web site that offers a walk thru that maybe I could follow for a while to understand the tactics behind this sort of strategy.
All I am is frustrated each time I attempt to play. I can't make it past the first battle/mission. I just don't play enough RPG's and hated all the one's I did play. This will have to be ranked up there with one of those.
My advice is that if you are not into RPGs, then move on and find another PSP game to purchase. The sad news is I'm having more fun with Ape Escape than this one.
On the plus side, the graphics are true Metal Gear style. The story (from what I've seen in my short amount of play) seems to follow the Metal Gear saga. And that only frustrates me more. I really really want to play this game and just can't.
I'd have to give it a thumbs down over all. Sorry guys! I don't see the magic of this game. I'm just going to have to wait for some better titles to come out on the PSP before I'm happy with any of the games out there. Maybe a Silent Hill story? Some SSX snowboarding? Let's only hope something good is coming down the line.

Wow, I was really blown away by this title. The quality, in terms of graphics, sound, controls, and challenge are just fantastic for an initial launch title, especially one bearing the Metal Gear franchise name. Now, I've never really been a fan of the Metal Gear series, as tactical espionage has never been my favorite genre. Sure, I remember the original back on the good ol' NES and have played Sons of Liberty. Metal Gear ACID is true to the formula of its predescessors, while instilling some new elements that spice things up. Let me explain:
Graphics
The graphics in this game are top notch. Not quite PS2 quality visuals, but darn near close. The effects for explosions are wonderful as well, and though there are no real time cutscenes to flesh out the story, the still art with text does an effective job of capturing the suspense of things. Short video segments highlight the use of certain cards and are a real treat.
Sound
The sound in this game is also top notch. Classic metal gear themes are abundant. Though the lack of voice acting is a downer, it does not detract too much from the overall experience.
Controls
Well, the card system that this game employs is one of its strengths as well as weaknesses. It takes some time to get used to planning out your turns in advance based on the hands you are dealt, but after a while this becomes second nature. My major gripe is that something simple like changing your direction requires you to use a turn, but overall I guess this just adds to the challenge.
Story
There are many twists and turns, in usual Metal Gear style. Though some may find it corny at times, it does a good job of keeping things gripping and suspensefull.
Playability
Another strong suit is the fact that you can replay missions after you have completed them, in order to pick up cards you may have missed, as well as to gain more points for spending on card purchases and to try out different strategies. This adds a large measure of replayability to the game. The card system itself does this as well, since you will undoubtedly want to keep playing until you've nabbed as many rare cards as you can.
What more can I say, I'm hooked!!!

I'd have to say that this is one of the best games to come out at launch time for the PSP. The turn based strategy takes a little while to get used to but once you get it, you love it. I have played it for about 9 hours so far and am still learning about new features. This is what they were thinking of when they were thinking of the perfect game for the PSP. The matches can last for an hour or so and you can save in the middle of the match. This is helpfull if you want to set up a check point in a major boss battle. The only problem with this is that it takes up about 300 odd kb to save and it takes a while.
One thing that bothers me is that there is so much reading required for the cutscenes and I skipped over one and was completely lost when I went to the next mission.
This is the basic overview of the game that I have found.

Initially I played a couple of missions and disliked it because I felt that it didn't live up the other Metal Gears in the series. But I decided to give it another chance and actually started to enjoy it. As I continued to play I started to improve and get better cards that helped me complete more and more missions. But eventually the game came to a stop again when I got stuck in the game. I'll probably pick it up soon and play it again... but overall it is a great game considering the fact that it is a turn-based card game (which drives many people away from buying this game). I'd say it is a very enjoyable game that required a bit of thought to complete missions... which is different from other games of today where simply running around and killing things beats the game.

This game fooled me at first. I was playing in the beginning and I could not get by the first level for 2 hrs. But once you read the manual it helps, lol. I beat it and now I'm taking on extreme mode, with all my previous cards. The final boss took me a solid 2hrs to beat, till I found a deck that worked. Acid is a stealth/strategy, not action game so you need patience with this game. Overall it is a good launch game.

That is the most important thing to realize about this game. It is NOT an MGS game. It is an MG game. Once you've realized that, you're ready to move on to one of the most unique experiences ever.
I, like most of you, was skeptical when I heard that they were making a card-based Metal Gear game. I didn't know how the action or suspense would turn out, but I had faith that the story would keep me interested. Having said that, it's the gameplay that's keeping me interested now. In the MGS games, if you messed up and got spotted by a guard, you could usually run away and hide for a while and that would be it. With MGA, if you get spotted by a guard, you have to check on the enemies around you (since the radar isn't really there, but you can go to an overhead look of the map to see everyone's vision), check on how many cards you have, how much Cost it will take, and other things that you'd never have to think about in the MGS games. It's truly a different and unique experience in itself.
But I do agree with the reviewers that have said that if this game didn't have Solid Snake in it, it wouldn't be as good. It's true. This game would be very boring and stupid. BUT... it does have Snake in it, it has many of the great touches that make a Metal Gear a Metal Gear game, and it IS very fun once you get into the core of it. This game won't convert non-MG fans, but if you've loved the MGS series on the PS1/PS2 and you wanna try something new, definitely give this a try.

Metal gear acid is a total departure from the rest of the metal gear series and is also the best PSP game I’ve played.
Graphics 8.7/10
The game is absolutely beautiful the only problem is some major frame rate drops when there are alot of explosions on screen but it hardly takes away from the enjoyment of the game. And the comic style cinemas could have been better too
Sound 8.0/10
The music is the same great metal gear music we all know and love but the game suffers from the lack of any voice acting
Game play 9.5/10
I can sum up the game play in three words "not for everyone". The card based strategy game play takes awhile to get used to but once you do you will love it. Just don’t go buy it expecting your same old metal gear game.
Overall 9.1/10
Not flawless, but a great buy for your PSP with the game measuring in at about 18 hours.

I honestly believe that this can be a very enjoyable game for people that are in to the Metal Gear series. The story and graphics put you right back into the action!
The only issue for me was the card, turn-based system of game play. Sure it's a bit more strategic and RPG-ish but that just wasn't what I was expecting. Yea, I know. I should've read up a bit before getting it but can you blame my eagerness and excitement on launch day? :-)
Overall, it's a fun game with excellent graphics. A real "thinking mans" game. Just don't expect high action, running around shooting people game play.

I haven't played a MGS game since the first one for playstation but when I got my psp and found out there was a MGS game I thought geez another. But i was quite mistaken in thinking that, this game is totally different from the other MGS games (tho there fun also). The game is a card based strategy game sorta like FF tactics with cards I know it doesn't sound like it would fit MGS well but to my surprise it did quite well.
The game is a mixture of stealth and fighting which is done actually well considering your using cards. The graphics on this game are AMAZING totally blows out my other psp games. The textures are very crisp and the character animations are quite nice also. The effects are done very nice also especially the explosions. The character art during cut scenes is also done very nice tho it would be better if there was voices but thats not a big problem. The sound in this game is also done very well especially the music. When you become spotted the music makes the game seem less like a strategy game and more action because it fits the scene so well. The sound effects are also done very well I haven't seen one gun shot out of sync yet.
The one thing I found bad about this game is the AI sometimes you'll be in a fight with an enemy and he will just walk away then come back I don't know why but it seems strange. The AI also must be hard of hearing because ive blown off a few claymore mines in a room next to them but they don't seem to come running. But besides that its still very challenging. Overall this game gets a 90 just because its actually hard and fun (haven't seen this combo in awhile)
Graphics: GREAT
Gameplay:Good
Sound:Good
AI:Good
If your a MGS or strategy fan you should really pick up this game you won't be let down.

I purchased this from ebay for $45 new but plastic seal was off including shipping. Quite a good deal I got I think. So I boughtt his as my first game to play on my PSP.
I loaded up the game and clicked New Game. The main menu was in English, which was very nice. I waited for all the Japanese cutscenes and such to finish, and then I was playing as Solid Snake. There was a little tutorial thing in the beginning, so I beat the tutorial and went on with the game.
The first thing you will notice with the game is its wonderful graphics. The graphics are PS2 quality, and are vividly detailed. I was shcoked to see the graphics so good!
The music in this game was great. The music did have that Metal Gear type of music. The music was tense and fit right in with some situations in this game.
The controls were good. They felt solid and easy to navigate with in this game.
The gameplay now was different from previous Metal Gear games. This game is a Real Time Strategy card game. The previous Metal Gear games were all stealth action types. You move and choose your actions using the cards. Each level is like a board. You move on the board. I do not speak, read or write Japanese, so you may think this game is hard to play for the gamer without Japanese knowledge. Wrong. This game is very easy to play without knowing Japanese. The cards have detaild pictures and have bits of English in them for you to know what each card does. I feel like I am playing an American game, since there is a decent amount of English in it. Besides understanding the cutscenes, this game is easy to understand without Japanese knowledge. This game still feels very Metal Gear-ish. It still feels like you have to be stealthy and such.
* Still feels like a Metal Gear game
* New gameplay, new challenges
* Awesome graphics
* Easy to play without Japanese knowledge
* Some may not like the whole Real Time Strategy card game thing
* Cannot understand cutscenes unless you can read Japanese
Overall this is a great game to buy.
Hope you liked my review!
