HTML Code for downloading files to PSP? - PlayStation Portable

I am trying to add mp4 video files to my website for PSP users to download. The problem I am having is that if a user clicks directly on the link from their PSP browser, they get a page full of nonsense code. In order to download, they have to press triangle to go into the PSP browser menu and manually select "Save Link Target" as happens on this page:

link (if viewed on a PSP, that is!)

Does anyone know the HTML code I need to add to simply start downloading to the PSP once a user has clicked on the file?

just put a note "Press triangle and choose "save link target"
that's how it is on most sites..

If you're using the <a> tag, then it'll do it automatically, depending on the file in question. HTML pages and images are displayed, everything else is downloaded.

ilian123: As seen in the link I provided above, that is exactly what I am doing right now. But I have been to a number of sites, such as Sony's Connect site, that simply require you to click on a download button. I checked their source code but nothing jumps out at me as being different.

sabledragon: That, unfortunately, is not true. A simple <a href> to a file does not automatically mean your browser will download the file. I've seen differences even among different PC browsers. Sadly, if <a href> was all I needed, I wouldn't even be asking this question...

True but you said you wanted this for the the PSPs browser. I'm well aware that the action differs on certain browsers. But the PSPs browser follows the behaviors I described.

Sabledrakon -- obviously not, otherwise I would not be asking this question. Use your PSP to go to the link I provided above and you will see what I am talking about. <a href> alone does not automatically mean instant download.

OK, just to clarify:

When you go to the link above and click on "Secret Machines Sony PSP, low bitrate, 17 MB" it automatically gives you the PSP's download page (the Save "X" file in "Y" folder page)?

It doesn't work on my PSP. I have to click on the triangle and manually chose to save the link. What firmware are you running?

I'm running 2.60 and it handles the action just fine with a save dialog.

Thanks for your help. That is very odd. I'm running 2.6 as well. I wonder why my PSP gives me gibberish code when I click directly on the link?

It happens with all the PSP video files on my site. It also does it when I click on the Windows Media video files. But when I click on the Quicktime files then I *do* get the normal save dialog. The mp3 files on my site also give me the normal save dialog when I click on them.

The save dialog also appears normally when I use sites such as Sony's PSP Connect site.

If anyone else wants to test my links and help me see if I can pinpoint which PSPs this happens to, please try the link in my first post or go to link and click around. Or let me know if you have encountered this problem at other sites.

My PSP is version 2.0, when I just clicked the links it went to a bunch of gibberish and then said "Not enough memory."

s4ever - Thanks for trying that out. Yeah, that's what happens to me, using FW 2.6. Have you ever been to Sony's Connect site, or encountered this problem at other d/l sites?

I don't really know of any download sites that have a code so that it directly saves to your PSP, although there must be way..

Sony's Connect site does it (the one with Speed Racer episodes, not the one you go to on a PC). You "X" click on a download button and you automatically get the save dialog. But looking at their source code, I can't see anything special that they've put in there to make that happen. Now throw in sabledrakon saying that he doesn't even have any problems with my site and I'm even more confused! Crazy! I'll just have to keep poking around the 'net for more info. Thanks again!
