If and when Sony is able to manufacture a larger capacity UMD, will the PSP be able to support it?

Has Sony ever said anything about larger capacity UMDs?

No I'm positive that most games come in under 1GB.

most games do come in under 1 gb. Also it is impossible for the psp to play anything like blue ray because the data storage on a disk isn't dependant so much on the disk itself but more on the laser that reads it.

But the ps3 blue -ray will be the ulitmate capacity at 20gbs standard AND A 54gb dual layerd disk so anythings possible."

When Blu-ray is released, 50gb is going to be the standard size. 25gb is too small and will not be supported when blu-ray is released."

not to start flamin or anything, but the first guy was right...ish. 25-35gb is going to be standard because it's a signle layer blu-ray disc whereas the 50-70gb will be dual layer. i'm sure when they start out, most ps3 games will be using 25gb discs cuz developers won't be used to the insanely increased capacity. but if you were wondering, the range i put for the discs (ie 25-35) is because they haven't finalized the process they use to make them though. about 2 months ago one of the blu-ray organizations companies developed a way to decrease the track size on the discs (thus allowing for a larger capacity) using a more constricted blue laser.

i think that's enough for now...

yea, a new laser would have to be installed into the psp.

Dude I know that 50gb is dual-layer. But as the Blu-Ray mediums are released, the dual-layers will be considered the standard. Like how 700mb cds are the standard when they could have been released at lower capacity. So 50gb is going to be the flagship size. They already stated this in a reply to HD-DVD, HD-DVD stating of course that they will have 30gb as standard, and Blu-Ray replied with 50gb standard. You can further discuss this at ps3411.com where Blu-Ray discussions are more relevant.

obviously that would make sense to discuss it at ps3411, however the original topic was posted here and i wouldn't respond to it on another forum....but i'm done now so it doesn't matter anyway.

It already holds 1.8gb, which should be sufficient for any game I'd care to play.

Some day we'll look back on that statement and laugh. I agree, I'm not bashing you. It's just that in a few years 1.8 gbs is gonna be nothing.

1.8 gb is nothing now

1.8gb is big in terms of Handheld. But yea 2nd generation PSP games are already filling the 1.8gb, maybe we could see some Dual-layered UMDs in the future.

With tinkering of the mechanics of the UMD it might be possible to manufacture a double sided UMD (NOT DUAL LAYERED). Basically 2 discs in 1. The user would have to manualy eject the UMD disc and flip it over. Doubling the capacity to 3.6 gb.

That'll be better suited for RPGs.

The UMD is already dual layered.
