Having just joined I hope the experts on here can cut me some slack...

I would be very grateful if someone could help me sort out the errors I keep getting when trying to connect over my home network. Yes I have read through the forums (I am not that lazy :-)

Ok here goes:

1Having manually checked and rechecked my WEP key - it is entered correctly.
2Once I get to the address settings if I go for the EASY option I appear to get a connection but then when the device tries to obtain my IP address it times out and states "a connection error has occurred".
3After reading the posts I went into my network settings on my PC and checked the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Router and Primary DNS settings. I then entered this into the network settings manually. This time all appears to go well and I get a connection on Channel 11 (for some reason it reports a signal strength of 1% when I am next to the router but it still fails to connect to the internet. Either there is a message that communcation with the server failed (8041040F) when you try to open a browser on testing the connection. Failing that if you don't open the browser the connection also fails.

I am using a netgear DG834GT with Windows XP.

Sorry about war and peace above but I thought I better write the problem out in full.

No doubt I am being a complete clutz, but is there anyone who can give me an idiots guide to sorting out this mess.

Thanks Jase

If all your settings seem to be correct hit the windows key and R ..(run) type sevices.msc and make sure wireless zero config is disabled .Also Scan your computer for spyware as this can often cause connectivity issues.Start there and see if that helps

jiggy, other people have too reported problems with WEP + NETGEAR = PSP. you said you get a 1% connection, the same thing has happened to a lot of people apparently..

Try it without WEP, and/or try both 128 and 64 bit WEP, with NO ASCII. only HEX. and report back.

digi thank you for the advice. I upgraded the firmware on my Netgear router to the latest version, and disabled all WEP and it works....one of those eurphoric moments...

As my network is now unencrypted I am afraid of my sly neighbours hitching a free ride without asking - as well as snooping around my computer. Do you know if specific MAC addresses will work with PSP.

I had the same problem. I managed to solve the problem by converting my WEP key from a 13 character length ascii password to a 26 character length HEX password. Once you know what the hex value is, just enter it into your PSP. If you know what your WEP key is you can use this website to convert it to hex - link If you do this there should be no need to disable your wireless network security encryption.

The PSP has a MAC address... you could filter by that and not use encryption...
