thread starter
I just purchased PSPWare for MAC, got myself a 1 GB memory stick and am ready to start burning my DVDs to a format I can copy onto my PSP so I can catch up on the DVDs I haven't watched yet. I've read several posts about this in the forum and it seems that there are a lot of different programs out there to rip the DVD, then convert it to mp4. I wanted to start a thread explaining what the most recommended solution is for taking any DVD and being able to watch it on a PSP.
I tried converting one movie I had and was unsuccessful. I used Mac the Ripper - took the VOB directory and used handbrake to convert it to 480x272 px (The PSP screen is capable of 480 x 272 pixels - not sure why the PSPWare program only capable of 300 and change (not sure of the exact pixels, but I know it wasn't the same as the resolution of the screen of the PSP). Got my mp4 file, dragged it into PSPWare - got the red slash through the circle. Removed it from PSPWare and used the tear drop function and put the file there. The PSP synced - took forever (expected since the mp4 was 830 Meg). Went into my PSP and couldn't find the movie.
Not sure what I did wrong or what I should do, but I want to convert a lot of my DVDs so I can watch them through my PSP. Not worth buying a PSP DVD for 2xs the price of a regular DVD when I can buy a regular DVD for my home player and just convert it so I can play it on my PSP. +

After scrolling thru all these replies, i still wonder if there is a definitive way to convert dvd's to the psp using pspware using Handbrake and/or Mac the Ripper....any information would be so much appreciated. thanks in advance!!

I still say the best for me has been:
Use Mac Ripper to created a single .VOB file.
Drag .VOB file into PSP Ware with your prefered conversion settings.
This process seems to take the least amount of time as well. I've converted about 20 or so movies doing it this way, movies on average come out to be about 300-400 MBs.

Ok, great.....BUT...how do u get it to save to just one .VOB file?? thanks in advance....

In Mac Ripper, I think under Modes, theres a pulldown, I think (I don't have that app on this machine) the secend to last item in the pulldown (Title Only Extraction?) you can select it to extract the Main Feature only, usually tagged with the initials "MF", if you look closely, you'll see the time for the chapter is about the length of the actual feature, it should say soemthing to the effect of say "Title 01, 1:55 (MF)" something like that..., anyway, when you use that extraction setting, it will write one big chapter of the main feature into a single .VOB file.
The only issue I've come across is with some DVD's, there's sometimes an extra audio channel usually for director commetary that gets included into the write process. Usually all DVD movies have extra audi channels, but every once and a while, it gets mixed into the .VOB file. When I come across this, what I would do is use Handbrake for the extraction process, because with Handbrake, theres more settings for selecting specific audio channels to extract with.
I hope that helps.

And if your next question is, "Why not use Handbrake to begin with?"
What I say is, extracting a .VOB file in Mac Ripper on average for a 2 hour movie takes about 30 mins. Then coverting that .VOB file in PSP Ware will run about 90 minutes. If you use Handbrake to convert a DVD to an .MP4 file or .AVI, that process in itself will take about 90 minutes, if not more, than if you drag that output .MP4 or .AVI into PSP Ware, PSP Ware still needs to convert the file using its own settings, so it wstill needs to do its thing as well, thus doubling the conversion time.
Although, I'm not sure if you can make a clean PSP ready file using only Handbrake. If you could, then maybe it is the better route, but i haven't seen anyone post the correct settings in Handbrake that would create an .MP4 file that didn't need additional formatting before it could be viewed on a PSP.

ok...last stupid question. I managed to have Mac the Ripper rip a movie down to a single .vob file. PSPware recognizes it in the Movie sync folder, but then when i push 'sync', the sync lasts about 15 seconds, then there is nothing on the PSP. The file is 5gb and my card is 1gb...so it seems no conversion/syncing is happening. what am i doing wrong?? thanks in advance...

Did you actually drag the .VOB file into the PSPWare "Movies" window? I sounds as though no coversion ever took place. Your final movie file shouldn't be 5gigs, the .VOB file yes, but not a converted .MP4 file.
Try it again.

Ok, I have followed what you have said so far, sichon. But when I put the single .VOB file into PSPWare, it takes like 5 seconds then it says it's done. I have tried dragging and dropping as well as using the "+" mark to add it manually. I am using iPSP now to try to convert it, and I hope that works, but that doesn't give a good showing of how long it will take. Any further advice would be appricated. I have iPSP, PSPWare, Mac the Ripper all already. Anything?

Ok, I have pretty much given up on PSPWare, as I can't get it to work. I used iPSP to get the movie onto my PSP and it worked. The big problem is that the movie is too big. So, does anyone know where I can get a Mac compatable file compressor?
Alrighty, I found a compressor in DVD2oneX, but now my question is where do I use this compressor in conjunction with that walkthrough? The reason that I ask is that I am not sure if this compressor is compatible with Mpeg4. So, is this the correct way to do it?
I rip the DVD into one .VOB file using Mac the Ripper
Then I compress the Mpeg2 file using DVD2oneX.
Then I use iPSP to convert the file to Mpeg4 using iPSP.
Finally I put it in my PSP
Does that sound good to anyone else?edited: Jul 06 2005

I haven't had a prolem using PSPWare, but I bought it from day one, are you using a trial version by chance? Also, sometimes the progress/conversion bar is inaccurate, it could go through the % progress and be hung up on the "finalizing" stage for a longer time than expected.
I guess in the end use the best process that work for you, I haven't had an issue doing the single .VOB file straight into PSPWare as of yet.

I am using the trial version of PSPWare. Have you ever used FFMPEGX? Appearantely that has a PSP setting. I will try PSPWare again(maybe buy it), if I do, how do I compress the files?
+
In PSPWare, just drag and drop the files into it
+
so then.... what will it be? Using Handbrake with FFmpeg or use Handbrake with PSPware? I am curious because I am ready to throw this PSP out the window with all the ways I have tried to encode DVD to PSP with no audio lag or wrong audio language etc. I have had NO success whatsoever!!!! Please someone help me.

I'm guessing you're having a specific issue with audio lag with a particular DVD? Because the MacRipper to PSPWare has worked flawlessly for me 9 out of 10 times. Every now and then I'll get a movie where the director commentary, or another audio channel gets ripped onto the single .VOB file I create in MacRipper. When that happens, I try ripped the DVD using Handbrake because there are extra audio settings you can checkoff. Then only drawback is by using Handbrake, you spend a good amount of time encoding in Handbrake, then encoding again in PSPWare.
+
So how do you go by converting with Mac the Ripper? Do you use Title Only Extraction? Thanks
