I just purchased PSPWare for MAC, got myself a 1 GB memory stick and am ready to start burning my DVDs to a format I can copy onto my PSP so I can catch up on the DVDs I haven't watched yet. I've read several posts about this in the forum and it seems that there are a lot of different programs out there to rip the DVD, then convert it to mp4. I wanted to start a thread explaining what the most recommended solution is for taking any DVD and being able to watch it on a PSP.
I tried converting one movie I had and was unsuccessful. I used Mac the Ripper - took the VOB directory and used handbrake to convert it to 480x272 px (The PSP screen is capable of 480 x 272 pixels - not sure why the PSPWare program only capable of 300 and change (not sure of the exact pixels, but I know it wasn't the same as the resolution of the screen of the PSP). Got my mp4 file, dragged it into PSPWare - got the red slash through the circle. Removed it from PSPWare and used the tear drop function and put the file there. The PSP synced - took forever (expected since the mp4 was 830 Meg). Went into my PSP and couldn't find the movie.
Not sure what I did wrong or what I should do, but I want to convert a lot of my DVDs so I can watch them through my PSP. Not worth buying a PSP DVD for 2xs the price of a regular DVD when I can buy a regular DVD for my home player and just convert it so I can play it on my PSP.
Yes, this started out as a MAC FAQ - After trying out some of the above mentioned ways to convert, I will sum up this forum topic with what would be the recommended approach to doing a conversion from DVD to PSP (Mac)
Man, just grab your dvd, put it in your drive, open handbrake, rip it to whatever format it don't matter, don't mess with any other settings unless you wanted to crop it then do that, and then drop that single outputted file into pspware.

Keep in mind that when you do it this way, you're doing a double conversion and you increase the time envoled at 100%.
I did it the Mac Ripper to PSPWare way and the Handbrake to PSPWare last night, and no doubt that using Handbrake AND PSPWare doubles the conversion time.
I seem to be having issues with my PSPWare conversion. Wondering, as a temporary workaround, I may need to do the 'conversion' manually with another app. So, will Handbrake files at the appropriate rez (say 320x240 MPEG-4 .avi w/ MP3 48khz audio) play fine--i.e. can you use the naming conventions, call it an .MP4 and such? And how does one create the thumbnail (.thm) files?
shane: Can you provide details on the problem, perhaps we can help you?
HandBrake files directly will not play on a PSP, they must be properly converted to the strict format the PSP requires. .thm files are just JPEG images.
I took a look at the thumbnail tutorial and the basics apply to any platform. In essence, make a .JPEG at the proper resolution, save it with the appropriate name. Thanks for the link. I't be great if there was a sticky here at 411 with all the useful tutorials folks could muster, actually...
PSPware doesn't have a setting for how much compression. So where in this process are you setting how compressed the mp4 is? If you're using mac the ripper to extract a vob file, then just dropping it on PSPWare, what's the mb/sec of that final file going to be? I'm trying to figure out how much memory stick space the movies are going to take.
Great program by the way. I'll be registering my copy this weekend after I get some funds in my pay-pal account. Thanks!
Hey can you guys post a quick step by step for Mac the Ripper and Handbrake (what options you use exactly)? You seem to know how and I can never seem to get a single file from either one. I followed the tutorial but is so high level and there are so many damn options.
