thread starter
I just purchased PSPWare for MAC, got myself a 1 GB memory stick and am ready to start burning my DVDs to a format I can copy onto my PSP so I can catch up on the DVDs I haven't watched yet. I've read several posts about this in the forum and it seems that there are a lot of different programs out there to rip the DVD, then convert it to mp4. I wanted to start a thread explaining what the most recommended solution is for taking any DVD and being able to watch it on a PSP.

I tried converting one movie I had and was unsuccessful. I used Mac the Ripper - took the VOB directory and used handbrake to convert it to 480x272 px (The PSP screen is capable of 480 x 272 pixels - not sure why the PSPWare program only capable of 300 and change (not sure of the exact pixels, but I know it wasn't the same as the resolution of the screen of the PSP). Got my mp4 file, dragged it into PSPWare - got the red slash through the circle. Removed it from PSPWare and used the tear drop function and put the file there. The PSP synced - took forever (expected since the mp4 was 830 Meg). Went into my PSP and couldn't find the movie.

Not sure what I did wrong or what I should do, but I want to convert a lot of my DVDs so I can watch them through my PSP. Not worth buying a PSP DVD for 2xs the price of a regular DVD when I can buy a regular DVD for my home player and just convert it so I can play it on my PSP.

DO NOT drag the folder, only the VOB file into PSP to avoid the red circle

the reason pspware and all other programs only give you a res of 300 and change is because the PSP doesnt allow max resolution movies to be played from the memory card.....so you have to convert it down further

The problem with dragging the VOB file is that Mac the Ripper made 5 VOB files - so watching a movie in 5 parts is probably not the optimum way to use the software. If moving the VOB file onto PSPWare IS the recommeded approach, then how do you get one VOB file - what software and what settings do you select?

Try using HandBrake, link and rip to a single movie file, then you won't have to have it in parts.

So to claify when you run HandBrake, what are the options you select - extract to a .mp4? Size settings? or extract to VOB (or is there even that option in HandBrake?)

I use .avi extract with audio mp4 5 channel option. Then convert via PSPWare. that's how I get them down to about 170 mg per movie.

Mac The Ripper can also rip the main feature into a single .VOB file. You need to play with the modes and select the main feature only. Usually you'll see a single chapter thats is the length of the main feature shown in hours and mintues next to it in "()" says "(MF)".

I've gotten that to work with some success. I run into problems when the DVD has an extra commentary track, sometimes it "bundles" it into the .VOB file.

How is the quality when you shrink it down that much? The sample UMD that they provide with the PSP movies look incredible - I'd rather get the best quality and fit one movie on a 1 GB sitck then get a pixalated movie that you can fit down to that size.

I didn't see any option for mac the ripper to shrink it down to one vob file - I used the main feature only, but still got 4 vobs

Its under the last 2 modes, under title/chapter extraction

Handbrake allows you to set the target size of your movie. The larger the target size, the better the quality. So, it's up to you. I have a rinky ding 236 mb right now so I have to shrink it.

I'm using Mac, so I couldn't tell you if you're using PC. the Mac version extracts into a disk that shows up on your hardrive. Just drag and drop into your applications folder.

ah, the joy of Mac. How do you PC folks do it?

This is a Mac support forum, so hopefully he is using a Mac, otherwise this is the wrong forum.
