I didn't see anything on this forum about this, so I thought it would be helpful for people to hear about a hard drive you can connect to the PSP. I read about the Apacer Share Steno CD311 on the Playstation forum and now after buying one for myself, I can tell you it's great. I brought about 15 movies and all the Critic episodes with me on a long trip. It was very easy to connect the Steno to the PSP, delete the videos I just watched and then copy new videos to the memory stick on the PSP.
I got mine for $149 at supermediastore.com, which is just a little more than a 1 GB Duo, but it holds almost 40 Duos worth of videos. And you don't have to super-compress your videos to awful quality to get them all to fit on your Duo.
The Steno mounts the PSP memory stick so you can browse the memory stick's files on the Steno. It has a very tiny display and a crude, but useable interface to delete and copy files back and forth between the Steno's hard drive and the PSP.
Same storage capacity = same number of songs (or rather, same play time at same bit rate. Songs can be at different bit rates and different lengths, meaning their size varies wildly).
it would be a hellova lot better if i could buy an ipod and pull files off that, at least then i would have an alternative use for the ipod other than just a HD.
I want to get one of these to make it easier for file swaps at a local meet here in Charlotte, but no one seems to have any content to share but me (I'm transcoding 100s of anime and movies)!
does anybody recommend any other mp3 players that support USB OTG (that is what you need to do standalone transfers between usb devices like the psp... right?) I'm caught between the CD211 60 GB for about $170 or the iAudio X5 mp3 player 20 GB for $300 =... also, does anybody know the difference between the Apacer Steno CD211 and the Steno CD311??
The steno was shown on this site a long time ago actually. also, why is this 40GB VS. Duos, i'd imagine that if you have a 40GB steno, then you would want a 512-1GB to transfer stuff too. This Steno seems ok and the only reason that i havent gotten one yet is that you cant stream anything from it. if a new version allowed you to stream videos from it then you wouldnt need the GB duo and this would be a must buy for me. until then, i'm happy with my GB, i got 19 episodes of family guy on it right now and i'm satisfied with that.
Hmm.. I know what the Steno looks like. I'd just really like to know the difference between the CD211 and the CD311. And I think the question should really just be should you get a portable HDD or just stick with a duo. Anyways, the steno does seem ok to me too, and I share the too common wish for the psp to be able to stream as well, but then I thought about it... what I would do is get a HDD (whether its the 20gb X5 or the 40 GB steno cd311), and just break up full-length good quality movie files into files small enough to fit on my 512 duo. Now I can rip a DVD, convert it to mp4, even at UMD movie quality, and split up the movie into different files. I would imagine that the hardships of deleting and transferring files to my psp even 6 or 7 times to complete a full-length (2 hour) movie is a small price to play for price and portability...
To answer the last post, NO. You cannot load files from the share steno as far as being able to watch them straight off of it. Personally, I have both a 1G Sandisk stick and the Share Steno CD311 and enjoy the options from having both. I have about 35 movies saved on my Steno and its nice to have the option while I am out and be able to erase one movie off the stick and be able to load another without having to be within the range of a PC to do so. I haven't had any problems doing so when needed. As far as I am concerned, the Steno is a good gadget to have, if not only for the psp but for portability to trasfer files to friends pc's as well.
That's hard to say. If they add the option to be able to run files from an external usb device then sure. I just don't see Sony adding a feature like that any time soon. We are talking about a portable handheld and in most cases people would be trying to run files off of a PC because not everyone has something like the Steno...what's the point, ya know?
Can you remove the HD that comes w/ the CD311? Can you place a new drive into it? I have a 40GB CD311 but am interested in putting a 100GB drive in there. Can I do this?
First of all, Gallard, what you're talking about is called "streaming" and the question was asked a long time ago OF COURSE in this same thread, so maybe you should read the whole topic before asking the same question again. Second of all, "litterly" is not a word, and having a Steno CD311 (or iAudio X5) is NOT "literally" useless because most people have 512 MB cards anyways at least, and it is basically like having a 40GB duo, you just have to transfer to watch...
